It may be President Trump’s communication tool of choice – but it’s a tweet by former President Barack Obama that has become the most liked in Twitter’s history.

The tweet, the first in a series of three, quoted Nelson Mandela and was accompanied by a picture of Mr Obama smiling with a group of children from different racial backgrounds.

It has been liked almost three million times since it was posted on 13 August following the attack in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The milestone was reached at approximately 01:07 GMT, Twitter told the BBC.

It overtook a tweet posted by Ariana Grande expressing condolences after the Manchester terror attack in May.

‘Taught to love’

Over three tweets, Mr Obama quoted a passage from Mr Mandela’s autobiography, The Long Walk To Freedom.

“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin or his background or his religion,” the quote reads.

“People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” than its opposite.”

The picture shows Mr Obama in 2011 visiting a day care centre in Bethesda, Maryland.

It was taken by the then-White House photographer, Pete Souza.

Since President’s Trump election win, Mr Souza has been posting topical images on Instagram, mostly highlighting Mr Obama’s approach to the presidency in comparison to his successor.

The United States branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has congratulated and welcomed Ghana’s new Ambassador to the USA, Dr. Barfuor Adjei-Barwuah.

On Friday, July 21, 2017, H.E. Dr. Barfuor Adjei-Barwuah, Ghana’s nineteenth ambassador to the United States, met and presented his credentials to President Donald Trump, at the White House in Washington DC.

NPP-USA in a statement said it joins the larger Ghanaian community to congratulate Dr. Barfuor Adjei- Barwuah on his appointment and successful assumption of office.

“We warmly welcome you to the United States and into the Ghanaian community.”

Dr. Adjei-Barwuah is an experienced diplomat, who brings years of embassy experience as President Kufuor’s ambassador to Japan, to expertly serve Ghana’s interest in the United States.

“There is, therefore, every confidence that Ghana’s mission rests in very skilled and stable hands,” the group said.

“We in the NPP-USA are hopeful and especially happy about Dr. Barwuah’s appointment because we see his wealth of experience as a critical factor for cultural and service reforms in the embassy system which currently falls far below the expectations of Ghanaians and general embassy clientele.”

It added that, “Given the enormity of the task, the membership of NPP-USA pledges its support and call on all Ghanaians to work with Dr. Adjei-Barwuah to advance Ghana’s mission here in the United States.”

The President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, who was briefed ahead of Ghana’s decision to host two former Guantanamo Bay detainees from the US, has said he felt the processes leading up to the move were necessary, despite their hosting being declared illegal by the Supreme Court in a recent judgement.

According to him, the deal was rushed and kept under wraps by the US for fear that the matter would become too political, in addition to further security concerns.

[contextly_sidebar id=”FI9o9F5qJU16KgmQK3gHvOHyu96FMqiW”]Shedding some light on the January 2016 transfer of the two Yemenis on The Big Issue, Mr. Cudjoe intimated that, the US government was trying to avoid ruffling any feathers within its Congress at the time, given the terror links of the two.

The two detainees, Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby were under detention in US custody for 14 years after being linked with terrorist group Al-Qaeda.

“This decision was not taken lightly. In fact, one of the major reasons all of this was hurriedly done, and probably hushed, was because the United States government was worried that not even domestic lawmakers or advocates or civil society were going to be up in arms against it, but they were more worried about US lawmakers.”

He explained further that, at the time, there were some lingering doubts about the two former terror suspects and “some Congress people were going to go to whatever lengths within countries like Ghana and other places that had received these persons to still chase and argue that the United States government had committed acts of infamy.”

Another fear was that, the deal between Ghana and the US for the transfer “was going to be subjected to unnecessary security exposures which then would have consequences for countries they have relations with on a security level.”

“Those things plus the notion that the political leaders at the time in this country were briefed well in advance, was for me enough,” he stated.

Mr. Cudjoe was one of the key stakeholders briefed ahead of the arrival of the two Yemen nationals.

He admitted knowing about it on the show, saying, “in the heat of the public uproar, I was briefed. I got a call all the way from the States… I got two calls, one possibly just before they were brought, and another one when the matter became public as well,” Mr. Cudjoe said.

International Relations Analyst, Dr. Vladimir Antwi-Danso, believes government must be resolute in whatever decision it takes on the continuous stay of the two former Guantanamo Bay detainees being hosted by Ghana.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, Dr. Antwi-Danso stated that “the government must be firm, not rude and we can get what we want also,” as he advised it not to be intimidated by the United States of America, who shipped the two former detainees to Ghana in January 2016.

[contextly_sidebar id=”4A6KorR5KNV232EZwIL97fcvI3siXt17″]The continued stay of the two, who are Yemen nationals, has been thrown into question following the Supreme Court’s declaration that they were accepted into Ghana without recourse to the laws of the land.

The court, therefore, ordered that the government must within the next three months send the agreement to Parliament for ratification or have the two detainees sent back to the United States.

Whatever the outcome, Dr. Antwi-Danso stressed that the decisions government make must be in the interest of Ghana and not because of pressure from elsewhere.

“What we have to do is make sure that foreign policy is not dictated to us, and they will still continue to talk because these things are always done… diplomacy is such that you try to veer your opponent to your bidding and that is what they are doing.”

The Supreme Court judgment on the detainees, comes at a time when the US Embassy clarified laws on protocol visa allocations to government officials, including MPs and former Presidents visiting the US unofficially.

Some Members of Ghana’s Parliament are against this by the US and called for a reversal from them or retaliation from the Akufo-Addo administration.

Dr. Antwi-Danso was of the view that this development protocol visa for Ghanaian officials is part of the intimidation by the US because “I think they may have heard about the Supreme Court decision and they may want to sort of intimidate us, and they have been doing that.”

“Obviously they want bases in Africa. They want whatever else is in Africa and therefore they coerce the government with the denial of aid and so on, and we have been threatened before on the Gitmo 2, and I strongly believe that is not the way to go.”

In the government’s comments on the two former detainees, it has said it is taking “prompt” steps to deal with the Supreme Court’s orders concerning the continued stay of the two.

The two detainees, Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby were under detention in US custody for 14 years after being linked with terrorist group Al-Qaeda.
