Students of the Wa Secondary Technical School are at risk from cholera and other diseases due to inadequate toilet facilities in the school.

The over 2000 students at the school depend on an 8-seater toilet facility as the only place of convenience.

It is a sight to behold in the mornings as students form long queues waiting for their turns to use the facility.

In an interview with Citi News, the senior prefect of the school, Douglas Benni, lamented that the situation is adversely affecting academic work.

He said students have to wait for several hours to access the toilet facility instead of going for classes “and we have only one toilet which has four holes for the boys and four for the girls. We are many here and find it difficult to access it at a time especially in the mornings when we supposed to be preparing for classes. We queue for many hours and usually get to class late.”

He called on government and all other relevant authorities to urgently intervene to address the problem.

The Headmaster of the school, Gaeten Bayel, said the situation is creating serious disciplinary problems on campus.

He was worried that the problem has compelled some students to defecate in unauthorized places at the blind side of the school’s authorities.

“Feces that the facility collects in a day is so huge such that it normally doesn’t take time before its filled up. This gives out a very pungent scent. When students use it, it’s as if they have been smeared with the feces. We have tried so many times to solve the problem but it hasn’t been successful to the extent that some of them defecate anyhow,” the headmaster lamented.

The Wa Secondary Technical School, which was established in 1983 may have endured a difficult path until 2012 when it transited into a boarding house.
