Bayern Munich thumped 10-man Besiktas to equal their longest winning run and take a convincing lead in their Champions League last-16 tie.

The hosts won their 14th consecutive game after a dominant second half against Besiktas, who had Domagoj Vida sent off after 16 minutes.

Thomas Muller converted from close range in both halves, and Kingsley Coman also swept home.

Top-scorer Robert Lewandowski added two more for Bayern as Besiktas tired.

Besiktas, who won all three of their away games in qualifying from Group G, started brightly with Vagner Love shooting just over and Ricardo Quaresma forcing Bayern keeper Sven Ulreich to save at his near post.

But Jupp Heynckes’ men had 35 shots to their opponents’ six, and are well placed to reach the quarter-finals for the seventh year in a row when they travel to Istanbul for the second leg on 14 March.

Muller helps thwart Gunes’ golden oldies

Bayern players celebrate at the end

Bayern had over 68% possession against Besiktas

As soon as Bayern’s ever-reliable skipper Muller found himself in the right place to sweep through the legs of Besiktas keeper Fabri just before half-time, the win almost became a formality.

Heynckes’ side were unbeaten in the previous 61 competitive matches in which the 28-year-old Germany international has scored.

It is the eighth season in a row he has scored in the knockout phase, and Muller has netted in each of his two Champions League starts at the Allianz Arena this season.

Even with the omens stacked in their favour, Bayern did not immediately have it all their own way after Vida’s red card.

Despite naming the oldest starting line-up in the Champions League in six years, Besiktas made the hosts sweat in the first half.

Brave, energetic and enterprising going forward, Senol Gunes’ team created those big chances for Love and the well-travelled Quaresma, who has played for eight clubs including Barcelona and Chelsea but still possesses enough pace to make defenders worry.

He may have been optimistic in the first half, but Gunes seemed to opt for damage limitation just before the hour mark when he replaced striker Love with defender Dusko Tosic.

It was not enough to stop a rampant Bayern. Their front three of Lewandowski, Coman and the talismanic Muller, who was shrewdly rested in their previous Bundesliga win over Wolfsburg, had 16 shots between them and two assists.

Aided by the sharp instincts of full-backs David Alaba and Joshua Kimmich they suitably warmed the home fans on a night of -3C temperatures.

Kimmich made four key passes, created a goal and put in three dangerous crosses

Muller and Lewandowski make Champions League pedigree count – the stats

  • Only Cristiano Ronaldo (56) and Lionel Messi (38) have scored more goals in the Champions League knockout phase than Muller (21).
  • Lewandowski has scored 19 goals in his past 17 Champions League appearances at the Allianz Arena.
  • Bayern have won their past five Champions League games, the longest current run in the competition.
  • Bayern have won 20 of their past 21 Champions League games at the Allianz Arena, the only exception coming against Real Madrid in last season’s quarter-final (2-1).
  • Besiktas’ starting 11 had an average age of 31 years, 151 days – the oldest side they have fielded in the competition and the oldest in the Champions League since Apoel Nicosia on 3 March, 2012, v Lyon (31 years, 262 days).
  • The two earliest red cards in the Champions League this season have both come at Bayern for fouls on Lewandowski – Sven Kums for Anderlecht in September (11th minute) and Vida (16th minute).
  • Bayern attempted 20 shots in the first half. The most in the first half of a Champions League game was also by Bayern – in October 2013 against Viktoria Plzen (21).

What’s next?

Bayern face Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga on Saturday, 24 February (14:30 GMT) while Besiktas play Fenerbahce on Sunday, 25 February (16:00).

Chelsea have been drawn against Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League, while Tottenham will face Italian champions Juventus.

Premier League leaders Manchester City will play Switzerland’s Basel, Manchester United face La Liga side Sevilla and Liverpool take on Portugal’s Porto.

Holders Real Madrid will face Paris St-Germain.

A record five English teams progressed from the group stage this season.

Chelsea were the only English team to make it through as runners-up, with the other four sides all topping their respective groups.

The Blues have arguably been handed the most difficult tie, and it comes days after boss Antonio Conte conceded that their Premier League title defence was over following their defeat by West Ham, which left them 14 points adrift of Manchester City.

However, Chelsea did beat Barcelona in the semi-finals before lifting the Champions League trophy in 2012.

Real Madrid, who are aiming for a 13th title and third in a row, were given a tough draw against big-spending PSG after finishing behind Tottenham in Group H.

The group winners will be away in the round of 16 first legs on 13/14 and 20/21 February, and at home in the return matches on 6/7 and 13/14 March.

The final will take place in Kiev on 26 May.

Champions League last-16 draw

Juventus v Tottenham (13 February and 7 March)

Basel v Manchester City (13 February and 7 March)

Porto v Liverpool (14 February and 6 March)

Sevilla v Manchester United (21 February and 13 March)

Real Madrid v PSG (14 February and 6 March)

Shakhtar Donetsk v Roma (21 February and 13 March)

Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal will miss the first leg of the Champions League last 16 after he was found by Uefa to have been deliberately booked.

Carvajal was booked for time-wasting in the last minute of Real’s win over Apoel Nicosia on 21 November where they secured their last-16 spot.

It meant the 25-year-old missed Wednesday’s final group-stage match with Borussia Dortmund.

But Uefa has decided to ban him for a further match.

The last 16 draw takes place on Monday at 11:00 GMT with Manchester United, Manchester City, Paris St-Germain and Liverpool among Real’s potential opponents.

“The Uefa control, ethics and disciplinary body has decided to suspend the Real Madrid CF player Dani Carvajal for two Uefa competition matches for which he would be otherwise eligible,” said a statement.

“Given that Carvajal did not participate in the match Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund played on 6 December, 2017, the player still has to serve one Uefa competition match for which he would be otherwise eligible.”

In 2010, Real Madrid were found guilty of provoking suspensions in the Champions League after Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos were sent off in the final stages of a 4-0 win at Ajax to miss a meaningless match against Auxerre.

The pair escaped an extra ban but were fined £16,700 each. Coach Jose Mourinho was banned for one match for orchestrating the dismissals with goalkeeper Iker Casillas and his reserve Jerzy Dudek. Casillas and Dudek were also given fines by Uefa, having been caught on camera passing messages between the manager and Alonso and Ramos.

Striker Harry Kane says Tottenham have proved the doubters wrong by finishing top of one of the toughest groups in this season’s Champions League.

Spurs won at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday to secure their place at the head of the group with a game to spare.

That followed a 3-1 win against Real Madrid at the start of November which ensured their place in the last 16.

“The group we had, a lot of people doubted us and we wanted to prove them wrong,” said Kane.

“Hopefully we can build on this now for the rest of the campaign.”

It is an impressive achievement for Tottenham, especially after they failed to progress from what could be perceived as an easier group last season.

“The season before, we were watching the draw and we thought: ‘Oh Monaco, Leverkusen and CSKA’ and we thought we had a chance to go to the next stage,” manager Mauricio Pochettino said.

“Then this draw we looked between us and thought: ‘OK we are going to compete and we say nothing’ – and look now we are first, top of the table.”

Dortmund needed a win to keep alive their slim hopes of progressing to the last 16 and they took the lead in the first half when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang swept in his 16th goal of the season.

However, Spurs turned things around in the second half as Harry Kane equalised with a clinical low strike from the edge of the box soon after the restart.

Son Heung-min’s curled finish wrapped up the win late on.

It was a much-needed result and performance for Tottenham after the disappointment of their north London derby defeat to Arsenal at the weekend.

They can now look forward to a potentially more favourable draw in the last 16 against a side that finishes runner up in their group.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said it was “nice to write a piece of history” as the Reds thrashed Slovenian side Maribor to record the biggest away win by an English team in the history of the European Cup.

The Reds dominated throughout to go top of Champions League Group E with a scintillating performance.

Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah both scored twice, with Philippe Coutinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Trent Alexander-Arnold also on target.

The win eclipses 6-0 away victories by Leeds United over Norwegians Lyn in October 1969, and Manchester United against Irish outfit Shamrock Rovers in September 1957.

“I was told about the record after the game and I didn’t know,” said Klopp.

“The wonderful history of this club can feel like a backpack at times so it is nice to write our own good piece of the history.

“It will be difficult to beat that record. It is quite rare to win 7-0 but it showed we did unbelievably well.”

How the goals went in

Liverpool opened the scoring on four minutes when Firmino finished from close range after Salah broke free down the right.

Coutinho made it 2-0 with a half-volley from James Milner’s pull-back before Salah scored twice, finishing off passes from Firmino then Alberto Moreno as the Reds led 4-0 at half-time.

Firmino added a fifth with a flicked header from Coutinho’s free-kick as the Reds claimed their biggest Champions League victory since an 8-0 home victory over Turkish side Besiktas on 6 November 2007.

Daniel Sturridge linked up with fellow substitute Oxlade-Chamberlain for the latter to score his first goal for the club to make it 6-0, and Alexander-Arnold sealed the rout with a deflected 30-yard strike.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as holders Real Madrid maintained their 100% record in Group H by beating Borussia Dortmund.

The former Manchester United man took his tally to 109 in the competition by converting from Gareth Bale’s cutback and lashing in Real’s third.

Welshman Bale had opened the scoring with a superb volley, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted for Dortmund.

The Bundesliga leaders are without a point in the group from two games.

Peter Bosz’s side were beaten 3-1 by Tottenham at Wembley in the opening game.

Against the Spaniards, Dortmund looked to the referee for a penalty early in the match when Maximilian Philipp’s cross appeared to hit defender Sergio Ramos’ arm on the line, but Bjorn Kuipers signalled play on.

Spain defender Ramos could have made the scoreline more emphatic but twice missed with headers, nodding over from Toni Kroos’ cross and straight at goalkeeper Roman Burki.

“It was perfect,” said Real manager Zinedine Zidane. “It was a great game from us. We started well, the first half was brilliant as was the second. We had some difficult moments after the break, but we played them out.

“I am delighted for Ronaldo and Bale, but the whole side worked hard, everyone was brilliant and it was a tremendous game.”

A worrying moment for Real saw Bale hobble off with five minutes remaining, but the ex-Spurs winger was suffering from cramp.

La Liga champions Real come up against Premier League side Tottenham next and boss Mauricio Pochettino said: “It is a big challenge to see if we can compete at this type of level and to be very motivated against the best team in the world. We need to show to ourselves that we can compete at that level.”

Former Liverpool winger Ryan Babel was on target for Turkish champions Besiktas, who made it two wins from two in Group H by beating RB Leipzig2-0. The match was held up for 10 minutes in the second half because of floodlight failure.

In a repeat of the 2004 final, former Watford defender Miguel Layun scored as Porto defeated last season’s semi-finalists Monaco 3-0.

Real Madrid have an “appointment with history” when they face Juventus in the Champions League final in Cardiff on Saturday, says captain Sergio Ramos.

Eleven-time champions Real are aiming to become the first team since AC Milan in 1989 and 1990 to retain the trophy.

Italian side Juventus are looking to win the crown for the third time, while Real can extend their own record.

“We never dreamed of this opportunity but the stats are there,” said Spain international defender Ramos.

“It is a wonderful chance to take the cup home, then history speaks for itself. We are extremely excited about the chance to have two successive Champions League trophies.

“We have been very solid. Every time we have had the chance to fight for a trophy, we have done that. We are going to be extremely focused, very concentrated so we make as few mistakes as possible.”

Real Madrid won La Liga ahead of Barcelona this season and have scored 169 goals in all competitions this season.

In a repeat of the 1998 final, which the Spaniards won 1-0 in Amsterdam, Real come up against a side who are unbeaten in this season’s competition

Boss Zinedine Zidane, who played for opponents Juventus between 1996 and 2001, said: “We know all about pressure at Real Madrid.

“We are not favourites, nor are Juventus. It is 50-50. But we are in the final again, and everything is possible. I expect an open game on both sides.

“I have lived and been at Juventus, in Italy there is the famous Catenaccio, but Juve do not just have that.

“We are going to try to play our game, we know we are going to play against a great team. What everyone who likes football wants to see is to see a great final – and I think we will see that.”

Treble-chasing Juventus clinched a record sixth consecutive Serie A title this season and beat Lazio in the Italian Cup.

Juve have been European Cup winners twice, in 1985 and the last in 1996, but have been defeated finalists on six occasions, most recently against Barcelona two years ago.

They have conceded just three goals in 12 games so far, while Real have scored in every single one of their 12 games – a total of 32 goals.

Manager Allegri said: “We have worked hard all year and the wins this season have been all about reaching this game. But on Saturday we need to win and we need to understand when will be the moments to attack and when to defend.

“We have to have the belief that we can bring the cup home and we have to be fiendish to strike when Real offer us an opening.”

Barcelona created Champions League history as they progressed to the Champions League quarter-finals in a 6-5 aggregate win over Paris Saint-Germain.

Three goals in the last seven minutes for the Catalan giants ensured Luis Enrique’s side became the first side in the competition’s history to overturn a first-leg 4-0 away defeat.

Edinson Cavani’s strike just past the hour mark looked to have sealed the Parisians’ route to the last eight before two goals from Neymar and a late strike from Sergi Roberto handed the hosts a sensational victory.

The hosts went three goals ahead thanks to Luis Suarez, an own goal from Layvin Kurzawa and a Lionel Messi penalty before Cavani looked to have curtailed the building momentum.

But 25-year-old Roberto popped up at the last minute to secure his place in Champions League and Barcelona’s history.

Barcelona had made a flying start to lift hopes of turning the tie around.

Rafinha floated a high cross into the PSG penalty area from the right, which was nodded back up into the air.

As the ball dropped and PSG goalkeeper Trapp hesitated to punch clear, Suarez was alert to head the ball in, which was then hacked out from under the net but it had clearly crossed the line.

PSG, who came to Spain unbeaten in 16 matches with 14 wins, tried to respond quickly and felt they had a strong claim for a penalty after Julian Draxler’s cross looked to have hit Javier Mascherano on the arm, but the referee was not interested.

Barcelona went close again on 17 minutes when Neymar curled his shot narrowly wide.

It was 2-0 on 41 minutes with another scrappy goal.

Captain Andres Iniesta chased what looked a lost cause into the left side of the PSG penalty area, but managed to dig possession out from Marquinhos.

As the ball went back through the six-yard box, Trapp palmed it onto Kurzawa, who could only slice an attempted clearance into the empty net.

Enrique’s men continued on the offensive at the start of the second half.

Neymar darted into the left side of the PSG box, where defender Thomas Meunier was slipping to the floor as he stumbled forwards headfirst and pulled down the Brazilian.

Initially the German referee did not give the penalty, but pointed to the spot once he had consulted with his assistant behind the goal. Messi made no mistake as he drilled the ball past Trapp.

PSG, though, almost put the tie to bed immediately after when Meunier got away down the right and whipped a low ball through the Barcelona penalty area, where Cavani slid in to crash his shot against the near post.

As the hour mark passed, a deep free-kick was lobbed into the Barcelona penalty area.

Kurzawa nodded the ball back down into the path of Cavani, who drilled a half-volley past Ter Stegen which looked to have killed off the tie.

The 37-goal Uruguay forward was denied a second when sent clear as Ter Stegen blocked at the near post.

Barcelona appeared to have run out of steam, before Neymar whipped an angled free-kick from 25 yards direct into the top-left corner with two minutes left.

Suarez then went down under a challenge from Marquinhos, which was enough for the referee to again point to the spot.

This time Neymar converted, before Barcelona kept the pressure on and they were rewarded when Roberto scored his first goal of the season and the most dramatic of winners as the Nou Camp erupted.

Angel di Maria scored twice as Paris St-Germain stunned Barcelona to leave the Spanish side in danger of failing to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in a decade.

PSG dominated this last-16 first-leg tie throughout and took the lead through Di Maria’s curled free-kick.

Julian Draxler added a second with an angled drive before Di Maria curled an effort into the top corner.

Edinson Cavani then sealed a famous win with a powerful fourth.

A lacklustre Barcelona – with Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar largely anonymous – did not produce an effort of note until seven minutes before the end when Samuel Umtiti headed on to the post.

The defeat leaves Luis Enrique’s side with an almighty task to stay in the competition when they host PSG in the return leg on 8 March.

No side has managed to overturn a four-goal first-leg deficit in the Champions League.

Barcelona breezed into the knockout stage by topping Group C, winning five of the six games they played.

Their one defeat was also the only time they conceded three goals in a group-stage game, when they lost 3-1 at Manchester City.

At least in that match they managed to score – Messi putting them ahead at Etihad Stadium – but at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday they barely troubled Kevin Trapp in the PSG goal.

The visitors regularly squandered possession and looked lethargic throughout. When they have not been at their best in the past, their star players have stepped up. But on this occasion they offered nothing.

Messi, so often capable of creating something from nothing, made uncharacteristic mistakes and was at fault for PSG’s second when he lost the ball to Draxler, who then played a one-two with Marco Verratti to slice through a static defence and put the French side in control.

It was one of the worst Barcelona performances in recent memory but PSG were also at their absolute best and, in truth, could have won by an even bigger margin.

They finished the game with 16 shots on goal, 10 of those on target.

PSG have long been the dominant force in French football, winning their domestic league title every season since 2013, but they are yet to transfer that form into Europe.

They have never progressed beyond the quarter-finals but dominant wins home and away against Chelsea at this stage of the competition last year suggested they had finally joined the continent’s elite, only for them to then lose against Manchester City.

Unai Emery, PSG’s Spanish manager, had faced Barcelona 23 times before in his coaching career and won just once.

But Emery has form in Europe. He led Sevilla to three successive Europa League titles from 2014, getting the best of the players at his disposal and that is proving to be the case at PSG.

Cavani now has 34 goals in 32 matches while Di Maria is producing consistently what he only managed in flashes at Manchester United. Draxler, who underperformed at Wolfsburg, has excelled since his January move to the French capital.

All three were key to Barcelona’s downfall and this could prove to be a watershed moment for both PSG and Emery.

“I think this makes PSG a threat in the competition,” former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“Mentally they will go on again and they will believe now they are capable of winning this tournament by beating one of the best teams.”

Barcelona were one of the favourites to win the Champions League at the start of the season but will now need to produce one of the greatest comebacks in football to stay in the competition.

They are more than capable of scoring goals for fun at the Nou Camp, having hit three or more in six of their previous seven games.

Borussia Monchengladbach were the last side to visit Barcelona in the Champions League and they lost 4-0 in December.

But PSG possess much more quality, with Di Maria and Cavani more than capable of scoring an away goal that would surely put the tie beyond Barcelona.

It is sure to be one of the toughest tests of Enrique’s Barcelona career to date.
