The new project, aimed at training the next generation of HR practitioners, will see established practitioners mentor a number of young professionals on ways to reach the heights of the sector.

The launch earlier in the week at the Labadi Beach Hotel saw a number of renowned HR practitioners in the country,

The HR and Business Services Director of Tullow Ghana Limited, Irene Asare, said at the launch that with the growing influence of HR practitioners in many successful companies across the world, business owners have raised the standards they expect from persons they employ to manage their human resource.

According to her, the interactions with the mentors during the 12-month programme will inculcate modern and more efficient management methods into the young professionals to enable them to contribute more significantly to the success of the companies they work in.

“The aim is to pilot a one-year mentoring programme that brings together a pool of top notch HR practitioners towards nurturing the next generation of HR leaders. Human Resources Management is a fast-growing profession in Ghana with many aspiring young talents. Over the years, there has been increasing demand from businesses for HR professionals to be real enablers of business growth,” she said.

“Not many HR professionals in the country possess the expected experiential knowledge, skills and competencies by modern-day businesses to tackle some of the key issues. Hence the need for a programme like this.

The President of IHRMP, Edward Kwarpong advised the mentees to take advantage of the opportunity they had been given as their “continued stay in the pool of mentorship depends on performance.”

According to him, the programme was necessary because of the lack of many “well-structured mentoring and coaching programmes.”

He assured that Insitute was committed to the collaboration with Tullow to ensure the sustainability of the programme and provided mentors to train the mentees.

He thanked Tullow for the “great gesture” to give back to the HR community. “May others be touched to do similar”

Outgoing Managing Director of Tullow, Charles Darko also advised the mentees to learn as much as they could from the seasoned practitioners during the programme.

“It’s one thing to be selected and another to make something of it…The difference between the mentees is what they use what they learn from the sessions for,” he added.

According to him, the “business environment is becoming more complex” and “so much has changed in terms of tech,” adding that the practitioners must learn how to tap into that change as “whether you like it or not, change will happen.”

The Programme

25 mentees were selected from a total of 40 HR professionals who applied for the programme which will take place in 12 separate sessions.

Each candidate will be assigned a senior HR professional as a mentor with the mentees having one-on-one quarterly mentoring sessions from their assigned mentors in addition to the monthly capacity-building sessions.

Experts including other HR Star Award winners, will be invited to lead discussions on topics like “Business expectations of HR professionals”, “Building effective engagement strategies” “Being a skilled influencer and communicator”, “Being an agent of change in your organization”, “Dealing with difficult conversations”.

This is at least the second time in a row that the oil company has posted a loss after tax.

For 2017, Tullow’s loss after tax amounted to 189 million dollars; this is an improvement of about 408 million dollars or 68 percent compared to the 2016 figure of 597 million dollars.

The oil company’s revenue for last year also reached 1.72 billion dollars; up from the 1.27 billion dollars recorded in the preceding year.

This means that Tullow’s revenue from its production went up by 453 million dollars or 36 percent between 2016 and 2017.

Even though Tullow recorded a loss of 755 million dollars in 2016, it managed to accrue some profits of about 22 million dollars last year.

Commenting on the company’s performance for last year, the Executive Vice President for West Africa, Gary Thompson, said,

“Tullow’s West African operations remain at the core of Tullow. In 2017, West Africa delivered over 89,000 bopd of high-margin, low-cost oil and in 2018 we will invest in Ghana to sustain this impressive performance over the coming years.”

“Drilling is due to commence on the Ntomme field by the end of this month and we continue to evaluate the business case of procuring additional rig capacity. I have been particularly pleased by the performance of the TEN fields, with production exceeding 70,000 bopd for the last three months, especially given the delays on completing the development wells which resulted from the ITLOS drilling moratorium. I look forward to similarly strong performances from Jubilee, TEN and our other West African oil fields in 2018.”

On the specific operations in Ghana, the Jubilee oilfields produced an average of 89,600 barrels of oil per day.

On TEN, Tullow is hopeful the permission to drill additional wells after the ITLOS ruling, should increase production from the current 56,000 to about 64,000 barrels of oil per day.

Tullow is also optimistic that the completion of the gas export trial to Ghana National Gas Company should allow for the export and sale of TEN gas as well as the ability to supply gas in substitution for Jubilee gas during the planned Jubilee turret remediation shut-downs this year.
