Harry Kane fired a second-half brace to become Tottenham’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer in an impressive 4-0 victory over Everton at Wembley Stadium.

The in-form Son Heung-min opened the scoring for the home side with his fifth consecutive home league goal midway through the first half before Kane doubled their lead moments after the interval.

Kane was on hand to tap home his second of the night shortly before the hour mark – his 98th in the Premier League to surpass Teddy Sheringham as the north London club’s record marksman in the top-flight – with Christian Eriksen completing the rout in the closing stages.

Spurs, who headed into the match on a 10-game unbeaten streak at Wembley, knew that a victory would leave them just three points behind Chelsea, following their goalless draw against 10-man Leicester, and level with Liverpool, who host Manchester City on Sunday.

And after a slow start, the match suddenly came to life midway through the opening period when Wayne Rooney thought he had netted the first goal of the night.

The former Manchester United forward headed past Hugo Lloris following a strong nod down from Cenk Tosun – making his first appearance for Everton after his £27million move from Besiktas – only to see the assistant referee correctly flag for offside.

Moments later Kane, who on Friday was awarded the December Player of the Month award for netting eight goals in six matches, stung the hands of his England colleague Jordan Pickford.

Mousa Dembele found the Spurs forward in space and he attempted to curl his right-footed shot into the far corner only for Pickford to parry. Kane tested Pickford again, but his swivel and shot was comfortably saved.

The Everton goalkeeper, however, could do nothing to stop Son from scoring the opener.

Christian Eriksen found Serge Aurier with a beautiful cross-field pass, and his drilled cross was easily converted by Son with 26 minutes gone. Son became only the second Spurs player to score in five consecutive Premier League home matches and the first since Jermain Defoe back in 2004.

The South Korea international was then involved almost immediately after the interval to put the match all but out of reach for Sam Allardyce’s side.

Son delivered an exquisite turn to lose Everton full-back Jonjoe Kenny before driving towards the visitors’ goal and putting it on a plate for Kane to tap home.

The goal drew Kane level with Sheringham, but it would soon get even better for the England international. Spurs were rampant – and after the ever-impressive Son had hit the post – Kane was soon celebrating his record strike.

Eric Dier’s cross from the right-hand side found Kane unmarked on the six-yard line, and his shot, albeit slightly scuffed, eased past Pickford with 59 minutes on the clock.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were in full control with a desperately off-the-pace Everton affording little response.

Pickford prevented a fourth with a fine double save from Son and then Dele Alli before Eriksen put the icing on the cake when he struck home a neat back-heel from Alli.

It was no more than Spurs deserved, but for the Toffees, following a strong start under Allardyce, they failed to register a single shot on target, and are now six matches without a win and once more looking over their shoulders.

Brazil midfielder Philippe Coutinho says his move to Barcelona is a “dream come true” before his official presentation at the Nou Camp on Monday.

The 25-year-old is set to join the Spanish giants after a £142m deal was agreed with Liverpool on Saturday.

He took part in a brief photo session at the Nou Camp after Barcelona’s 3-0 win against Levante on Sunday.

Coutinho will officially sign his contract at 11:30 GMT on Monday before being presented to the public.

“Hi Barca fans, I am already here, it is a dream come true and I hope to see you tomorrow, ” he said in a video message on Twitter.

Later, in an interview with BarcaTV, Coutinho added he was excited to be soon playing alongside the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

“It is incredible to know that I am going to live with idols, players with a lot of history,” he said.

“Footballers like Leo Messi, Luis Suarez, [Andres] Iniesta, [Gerard] Pique, [Sergio] Busquets.

“I am very happy to be able to live together, to be able to learn from them and be able to win together.”

The playmaker will sign a five-and-half year deal and will have a buyout clause of 400m euros (£355m).

It is one of the most expensive transfers of all time, eclipsed only by the £200m Paris St-Germain paid Barcelona for Neymar last summer, and the £165.7m Kylian Mbappe will cost PSG at the end of his initial loan spell from Monaco.

Valverde on his £142m man

Speaking after the Levante game, Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde said it was “too soon” to determine where Coutinho will play in his side.

It has been speculated that he could play alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in attack or become 33-year-old midfielder Andres Iniesta’s long-term successor.

“We can take advantage of his versatility,” Valverde said.

“He scores and sets up goals, and going forward he can help us a lot as he can play both inside and out wide.”

Valverde is confident Coutinho can improve a side that is nine points clear at the top of La Liga.

“I think he can bring a lot to the team,” he added.

“He is here now, and good luck to him, because if he has luck then it will be good for us.”

Barcelona midfielder Paulinho plays alongside Coutinho for Brazil and is looking forward to linking up with his compatriot at club level.

“He is a great player, a magnificent player,” the former Tottenham player said.

“I am certain he will really help Barca to attain our objectives this season.

“We hope to see him playing for us as soon as possible.”

Harry Kane equalled Alan Shearer’s Premier League record for the most goals scored in a calendar year with a fine hat-trick against Burnley.

The Spurs star opened the scoring with a first-half penalty and struck twice after the break to make it 36 league goals in 2017 – equalling the record Shearer set in 1995.

It was also the England international’s seventh treble of the year, and took his tally to 53 goals in all competitions, as Spurs ran out 3-0 winners at Turf Moor.

Kane now has one chance to break Shearer’s record, with Tottenham at home to out-of-form Southampton on Boxing Day.

Kane’s lethal finishing was the only thing really separating the two teams – Tottenham may have dominated the chances but both teams were sloppy in possession.

The 24-year-old broke the deadlock in the sixth minute from the spot, after Dele Alli was bundled over in the box by Kevin Long – although Clarets fans hounded the England man for the remainder of the game for an alleged dive.

Kane made it 2-0 on 69 minutes went he was sent clear through by  Moussa Sissoko’s clever pass and made it look easy as he stroked the ball past goalkeeper Nick Pope.

He then completed his hat-trick with a lethal finish at the far post, netting his 15th of the season.

The victory sees Tottenham leapfrog both Burnley and rivals Arsenal into fifth in the table.

Leaders Manchester City powered to their 16th successive Premier League win with a 4-1 thrashing of Tottenham at the Etihad.

Two goals from the prolific Raheem Sterling added to earlier efforts from Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne as the hosts swept the Londoners aside on a misty night.

Christian Eriksen did score a Spurs consolation, but City could easily have scored several more with Gabriel Jesus – from the penalty spot – and Bernardo Silva both hitting the post and Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris making several good saves.

Perhaps critically, the visitors chose not to adopt the defensive mentality of some of City’s recent opponents and set out to press them.

That made for a frantic start, with neither side wanting to allow their opponents much time on the ball, but City soon worked Spurs out.

De Bruyne began to dictate the tempo and Leroy Sane tormented Kieran Trippier on the right. Sergio Aguero had City’s first serious chance when he headed wide at the near post from a De Bruyne free-kick and the opener followed from another set-piece.

This time it was a corner and Gundogan, replacing David Silva in the side due to personal reasons, reprised the Spaniard’s recent goal-scoring heroics by arriving unmarked to head home.

City were already well on top by this stage and it was remarkable that a second goal did not immediately follow.

Aguero forced a good save from Lloris and Sterling blazed over before Gundogan also shot at the keeper.

Aguero put another shot wide and Spurs were relieved to reach half-time having suffered only limited damage.

Their only opportunities had fallen to Harry Kane, who headed wide and curled a low shot just beyond the post before taking a boot in the face from Nicolas Otamendi in an accidental clash.

City had a lull early in the second half, but Ederson saved well from Kane.

Pep Guardiola rejuvenated his attack by sending on Jesus for Aguero and within moments the Brazilian was denied by Lloris. Sane then forced a fine save from the Frenchman.

Dele Alli was perhaps fortunate to escape being sent off after coming down on the ankle of De Bruyne with a heavy challenge. The England international, who also caught Gundogan in the first half, was shown only a yellow card.

De Bruyne seemed hurt, but the damage was not lasting as he burst into the area moments later and blasted a close-range shot through the grasp of Lloris to double City’s lead.

De Bruyne looked like producing a carbon copy of that goal soon after, but was felled by Jan Vertonghen. Jesus fired the resulting spot-kick against the post and Sterling shot over from the rebound.

Sterling did not dwell on the miss, making it 3-0 after being teed up by Sane at the end of a slick move and then pouncing on a defensive mistake to add the fourth late on.

Eriksen had the final word for Spurs in injury time, but it was a night to forget for the visitors.

Burnley 1-0 Watford

Scott Arfield stepped out of the shadows to become Burnley’s latest match-winner as the Clarets continued their eye-catching Premier League campaign with a 1-0 victory over 10-man Watford.

Billed as a battle of wits between Sean Dyche and Marco Silva, two over-performing coaches who were heavily linked with the Everton job recently, it was the former who enhanced his growing reputation.

Marvin Zeegelaar’s 39th-minute red card for a studs-up challenge on Steven Defour played its part but it was Arfield, granted a first start since October 21 only because of Robbie Brady’s injury, who provided the decisive finish on the stroke of half-time.

Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes both saw efforts ruled out for offside as Watford stayed in the game, though two weak penalty appeals were as close as they came to nicking a point.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Bournemouth

Christian Benteke missed the opportunity to earn Crystal Palace a priceless win when he missed a stoppage time penalty in their 2-2 draw against Bournemouth.

Jermain Defoe gave Bournemouth an early lead following a well worked corner before Luka Milivojević equalised from the spot.

Scott Dann turned the game on its head but Defoe’s sublime lob brought the visitors level just before the break.

Roy Hodgson’s side missed a host of chances before being awarded a penalty but Benteke fluffed his lines at the crucial moment.

Huddersfield 2-0 Brighton & Hove Albion

Steve Mounie fired a first-half double as Huddersfield bounced back to winning ways in the Premier League by beating Brighton 2-0 at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Club record signing Mounie, back in the starting line-up after recently returning to full fitness following injury, grabbed his first goal since the opening day early on and headed his second just before half-time to help the Terriers halt a four-game losing run.

Victory lifts David Wagner’s side above Brighton in the table and extends the south-coast club’s winless league run to five matches.

Tottenham 5-1 Stoke City

Tottenham got back to winning ways with a commanding win at home to Stoke.

Ryan Shawcross’ own goal broke the deadlock before Son Heung-Min doubled Spurs’ lead just after the break.

Harry Kane scored two goals before Christian Eriksen made it 5-0.

Shawcross scored at the correct end this time with simple header ten minutes from time in a game Spurs dominated.

Swansea City 1-0 West Brom

Swansea climbed off the bottom of the Premier League as Wilfried Bony’s late winner eased the pressure on head coach Paul Clement.

The Swansea boss had insisted before West Brom’s visit that his future did not rest on the outcome of this game.

But Clement’s joy on the touchline was unconfined when Bony smashed home nine minutes from time in a crowded goalmouth to secure a 1-0 win

Tottenham Hotspur 1–1 West Bromwich Albion

West Brom frustrated Tottenham in their first match since Tony Pulis was sacked as manager, holding Spurs to a 1-1 draw at Wembley. Salomon Rondon opened the scoring in the first few minutes, and they held onto the lead until the final 15 minutes. However, Harry Kane popped up to net an equaliser, though Spurs failed to break through a second time to secure all three points.

The Baggies banished the memories of Tony Pulis inside three minutes, Rondon rolling a shot into the far corner of Hugo Lloris’ goal from just inside the area. West Brom went into defensive mode after taking such an early lead, and settled into a rigid two banks of four structure.

Spurs found chances hard to come by, with Harry Kane doing his best with a weak header, then a low strike that dribbled past the far post. Son Heung-Min and Eric Dier both went close before the break, but the visitors managed to hold on after switching to a three at the back, man marking system. After the break, Spurs continued to find it hard to test Ben Foster in goal.

Their build-up play was nice enough, but West Brom’s defence was holding firm. Dele Alli should have equalised just before the 70-minute mark, but Kieran Trippier’s delivery only just evaded his outstretched boot at the bar post. However, moments later Alli set-up the equalising goal, with a low delivery into the area converted by Kane.

Kane, Son and Alli all wasted the opportunity to put Spurs ahead, but the last chance fell to Rondon, who really should have scored from just inside the area to secure the win for West Brom. However, the points were shared at Wembley, and Spurs will be the more disappointed side following a frustrating 90 minutes.

Crystal Palace 2–1 Stoke City

Crystal Palace left it late to beat Stoke City and pick up just their second win of the Premier League season. Mamadouu Sakho scored the winning goal in second half stoppage time, after Ruben Loftus-Cheek had cancelled out Xherdan Shaqiri’s opening goal. There was little action of note in the opening passages, though Shaqiri was probing in attack for Stoke.

Their defence was holding relatively firm, though Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend were breaking the lines on occasion. Lee Grant was called into action late in the opening half, denying James McArthur twice from close range, after Ruben Loftus-Cheek sent in a fine delivery from wide. Stoke took the lead 10 minutes after the restart, Shaqiri finally converting to cap his fine performance.

He picked the ball up in midfield and proceeded to work his way to the edge of the Palace area, and, when there, he fired past Hennessey in goal. But just moments later the game was level again, Loftus-Cheek nipping in at the far post to convert past Grant. Further chances were wasted by both sides – Ryan Shawcross missing an open goal to put Stoke ahead with just minutes remaining.

Only seconds were left when Palace stole all three points, Mamadou Sakho tapping in the winner from close range after Yohan Cabaye’s powerful strike bounced off the post.

Newcastle United 0–3 Watford

Watford made light work of Newcastle on Saturday afternoon, winning 3-0 at St James’ Park to make it four defeats in a row for Rafa Benitez. Will Hughes and a DeAndre Yedlin own goal put the visitors in control by half-time, and Andre Gray added a third after the restart to secure a convincing win – but one that should have been even more convincing.

It was an open match in the early stages, with Matt Ritchie going close for the hosts and Watford’s Richarlison forcing Rob Elliot into a fine diving save. However, the visitors got the breakthrough after 20 minutes, with Will Hughes running onto Marvin Zeegelaar’s cross inside the area to send a low finish into the corner of Elliot’s goal.

Abdoulaye Doucoure could have doubled the lead seconds later, but he failed to convert another Zeegelaar delivery from close range. Joselu should have pulled Newcastle level, but Gomes pushed his attempt from a narrow-angle wide, and just before half-time Watford doubled the lead. Zeegelaar sent in another cross from the left – this time driven low – and it deflected off DeAndre Yedlin and into the bottom corner of Elliot’s goal.

Andre Gray and Richarlison both wasted chances before they combined to put the game beyond all doubt. Richarlison curled in a lovely cross from the left, and Gray beat the Newcastle defence for pace to reach the ball first, and send it past Elliot with a first-time finish. Further chances were missed by Watford, but the game had been over for a long while and ended in victory for the visitors.

Manchester United 1–0 Brighton and Hove Albion

Manchester United had to call upon luck to get back to winning ways, defeating Brighton 1-0 at Old Trafford courtesy of a deflected Ashley Young goal. The visitors were more than a match for United, and will feel aggrieved to have left Manchester with nothing to show for their efforts.

Surprisingly, it was the visitors dominating the opening passages of play, with Anthony Knockaert and Pascal Gross both going close to breaking the deadlock. Romely Lukaku was the first United player to test Mat Ryan in the Brighton goal, though his shot after 25 minutes was hardly troubling.

The hosts grew into the game as the opening half wore on, with Anthony Martial and Antonio Valencia sending in precise deliveries that Lewis Dunk had to clear. Ryan was at the rescue for Brighton on the brink of half-time; he got down quickly to keep out Lukaku’s point blank header, then reacted while on the ground to deny Paul Pogba – who reached the rebound first.

The Red Devils pressed for an opening goal after the restart, and 20 minutes in Ashley Young’s shot took a wild deflection and bounced over Ryan in goal to hand them the lead. The Seagulls went all out to pull the scores level, but they failed to break through United’s mean defence, and had to leave Old Trafford with nothing to show for their efforts.

Swansea City 0–0 AFC Bournemouth

Swansea ended a run of four straight Premier League defeats by holding Bournemouth to a 0-0 draw at the Liberty Stadium. Bournemouth started the stronger, playing with confidence against a team lacking in any. Marc Wilson went close early on, and Lukasz Fabianski comfortably dealt with Andrew Surman’s shot.

The hosts appeared more comfortable as the game went on; Jordan Ayew worked some space for himself but was dispossessed before shooting, Martin Olsson volleyed over, and Renato Sanches hit the side netting from Tom Carroll’s pass. Josh King remained dangerous for Bournemouth, though he could only strike straight at Fabianski after working his way into the area by playing a lovely one-two with Marc Pugh.

Swansea did have the ball in the net before half-time, though Wilfried Bony’s strike was disallowed as Ayew was adjudged to have fouled Nathan Ake in the build-up. Both teams pushed after the restart, and Swansea were showing much more confidence than they did in the first half.

Leroy Fer had the clearest opportunity, doing brilliantly to work his way into the area, but his first shot was saved by Begovic and the Dutchman sent the rebound wide. In the final moments Swansea were aggrieved to not win a penalty, but the only whistle heard from the referee was the one to signal the end of the match.

Arsenal beat down claims of a north London power shift as goals from Shkodran Mustafi and Alexis Sanchez sealed a brilliant 2-0 win over rivals Tottenham.

Spurs have been hailed as the dominant force in this fiercest of rivalries of late, but the Gunners proved they are still a force to be reckoned with.

Arsenal grabbed both of their goals in an entertaining first-half, which also saw Harry Kane force a save from Petr Cech and Christian Eriksen hit the post for the visitors.

But overall, Spurs just weren’t at the races as the hosts controlled the game, with Mesut Ozil particularly impressive as Arsenal claimed their first north London derby victory in seven attempts.

However, headlines will surely be dominated by the performance of referee Mike Dean, whose decision-making was called into question for both of Arsenal’s goals.

Spurs were raging when Davinson Sanchez was adjudged to have fouled namesake Alexis, when it appeared to be a brilliantly-timed challenge. The resulting free-kick was whipped into the box by Ozil and Mustafi was there to loop a fine header beyond the reach of Hugo Loris and into the net.

The Gunners doubled their lead just five minutes later, as Chilean Sanchez lashed in from close-range following Alexandre Lacazette’s cutback, although replays suggested Lacazette may have been marginally offside when played through on the right flank.

But few could argue with the result as Arsene Wenger’s side beat Tottenham at their own game, showing themselves faster, stronger and hungrier than their opponents in every department.

The three points moves Arsene Wenger’s side up to fifth in the table, just one point behind Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

If Arsenal could produce this sort of ruthless performance more consistently, they would surely be title contenders.

Harry Kane wore a bandage around his right knee but he and Dele Alli, who both pulled out of England duty last week, were deemed fit enough to start although Harry Winks dropped to the bench.  Lloris shook off a groin strain and Danny Rose was a curious omission from the squad.

For Arsenal, Lacazette was handed a starting spot up front but Jack Wilshere and Alex Iwobi were only among the substitutes.

Arsenal were all over Spurs from the outset, with Eric Dier’s pass out under pressure falling straight to Sanchez but Lacazette fired over.

It was a warning of what was to come and while a mix-up between Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny allowed Kane a rare sight of goal, Arsenal were soon pulverising their opponents with wave after wave of attack.

Ben Davies seemed a particular target, with several openings coming down Tottenham’s left, as Hector Bellerin and Mesut Ozil both fired dangerous balls across the box.

It was no more comfortable for Davinson Sanchez on the opposite flank as he was harried into playing a limp back-pass to Lloris, who just scrambled away ahead of the chasing Lacazette.

Christian Eriksen, virtually anonymous until this point, clipped the post with a dragged shot but it was no surprise when Mustafi headed Arsenal in front in the 36th minute.

Arsenal were fortunate to win the free-kick for the slightest of shirt-pulls from Davinson Sanchez on Alexis Sanchez before Mustafi climbed above the rooted Jan Vertonghen to head in at the far post.

Tottenham were rattled but five minutes later they were two down. Lacazette nipped in between Vertonghen and Davies, squared to Sanchez, who bundled in at the near post.

Lacazette’s arm looked on replay to have just been offside and Spurs assistant Jesus Perez waited to give Dean an earful in the tunnel at half-time.

The visitors could hardly argue with the scoreline, however, although they came out with renewed impetus after the break. Kane wanted a penalty for Sead Kolasinac cutting across him and seconds later drew a last-ditch block from Mustafi.

But while Arsenal dropped deeper, content to allow their opponents more possession, Tottenham struggled to find a breakthrough.

Wenger’s decision to take off Lacazette was greeted by boos. However Pochettino hauling off both Kane and Alli prompted celebrations from the home support.

Dier’s header drew an acrobatic save from Petr Cech and substitute Son Heung-min could have created a nervy finish if he had done better with two half-volleys late on.

As it was, Arsenal played out a surprisingly comfortable victory.

Arsenal needed to bounce back from two consecutive league defeats and gave the Emirates faithful plenty to cheer about in the first half against the Cherries. A woeful defensive performance from Eddie Howe’s troops saw Danny Welbeck and Alexandre Lacazette give the Gunners the easiest of 2-0 leads at the break.

lacazette-cele1

Welbeck got his second of the game five minutes into the second half to confirm the win for the north London outfit and heap further pressure on Howe, with his side without a single point on the board and only one goal to their name in the new campaign.

Brighton 3-1 West Bromwich Albion

Pascal Gross scored Brighton’s first ever goal in the Premier League – and their first top flight goal in 34 years – to give the hosts a lead that West Brom may have felt undeserved. No one at the Amex could have argued against the final result, though, with Gross later adding a second and Tomer Hemed a third.

A late goal from James Morrison would have injected a few nerves into the home crowd, but while the Baggies did create more chances, there were few signs of a genuine comeback from the visitors.

Everton 0-3 Tottenham Hotspur

It looked as though Tottenham would find three points difficult to seal at Goodison Park after an even beginning to the game, before Harry Kane miss-hit a cross to catch Jordan Pickford off-guard and open the scoring. Christian Eriksen doubled their lead close to half-time to confirm what would be a difficult afternoon for the Toffees.

And just seconds after the restart Kane latched onto a cross into the box from Ben Davies to secure a 3-0 victory and no doubt leave Ronald Koeman worried over the poor run of form his Everton side have hit.

Alvaro Morata is proving more than capable of filling Diego Costa’s boots. Leicester’s defenders marked the Spaniard well for much of the first half, but the striker finally got the better of Wes Morgan late on in the opening 45 minutes, heading in from close range to give Chelsea the lead.

N’Golo Kante was the unlikely goal scorer in the opening few minutes of the second period, and while a Jamie Vardy penalty suggested a comeback could be on for Leicester, the Blues were well worth the three points.

Southampton 0-2 Watford

Southampton have been short on confidence in front of goal and predictably struggled against a Watford team whose defence has proved tough to break down this season.

Watford were patient in opening the scoring, with Abdoulaye Doucoure’s 20-yard strike in the 38th minute the difference at the break.

The Saints failed to lift their game and only seconds after his introduction to the field, a 25-yard drive from Daryl Janmaat nestled in the bottom-left corner 66 minutes in and was all that was needed to seal the win.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men left the field at the final whistle to a chorus of boos and there will be plenty fearful of how their season could progress if their form doesn’t soon improve.

North London Premier League football club Tottenham Hotspur has said that it is not in any discussions relating to a takeover offer.

Media reports had said US firm Iconiq Capital was preparing an offer.

Spurs are currently in the process of building a new stadium, and will play games at Wembley Stadium next season.

The club agreed stadium funding with a trio of banks in May. It says other proposals emerged then, “including bank debt and equity investment”.

The banks involved in the stadium financing were Bank of America Merrill Lynch International Ltd, Goldman Sachs Bank USA and HSBC bank.

The club said in a statement: “The board believes this [stadium financing agreement] was the optimum solution in the interests of fans, employees and shareholders and for the continued development of the club.”

But it added: “The board is not in any discussions relating to a takeover offer for the club.”

Demolition of the club’s historic White Hart Lane home started at the end of the 2016-17 season.

They plan to have a new 61,000-seater stadium, built on the same site, ready for the 2018-19 season.

In the meantime, the club will play home games at Wembley, which they used in the Champions League and Europa League last season.

The new stadium is expected to cost £750m but will create about 3,500 jobs in the area when it is finished, according to the club.
