The Regent of Tolon, Retired Major Sulemana Abubakari, and some youth in the district, have rejected the President’s District Chief Executive nominee, Hajia Amama Shaibu for the Tolon district.

Mr. Abubakari has served notice of a major political upheaval in the area, if President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo fails to rescind his decision.

According to him, his palace was not consulted over Hajia Amama Shaibu’s nomination.

Ahead of the official announcement, some angry NPP youth besieged the Tolon Regent’s Palace, and backed his rejection of the nominee, Hajia Amama Shaibu’s nomination.

Hajia Amama Shaibu is the NPP Northern Regional Women’s Organizer, and she is a native of the Tolon district.

 Savelugu/Nantong district

Some irate youth also went on rampage in Savelugu Township over the appointment of their DCE, by setting ablaze NPP paraphernalia.

They also burnt car tyres on the Tamale-Bolgatanga highway, which runs through the Savelugu Township.

This was in protest against Hajia Ayishetu Seidu’s nomination for the Savelugu-Nantong district. Hajia Ayishetu until her nomination, served as  an accountant at the Tamale Teaching and Yendi hospitals.

Though she is one of the NPP’s bank rollers in the region, the angry youth claim Hajia Ayishetu is alien to the constituency and the district at large.

According to them, she is not a registered voter in the Savelugu constituency.

They thus appealed to President Nana Addo to reconsider his decision and do the right thing.

There are concerns that the development, if not handled well, could affect the NPP’s electoral fortunes at the 2020 polls both in the Savelugu and Nantong constituencies.

The governing party for the first time since 1992, won the Savelugu seat in 2016 because of the NDC’s disarray ahead of the elections.

 Gender equity

One striking thing about the list of 26 MMDCE nominees for the Northern Region is gender equity.  For the first time, the region can boast of four female DCE nominees for Bole, Sagnarigu, Tolon and Savelugu/Nantong.

Hajia Mary Nakobu was the only female DCE in the Northern Region for Chereponi in the immediate past NDC government.

Meanwhile, the Youth Organizer of the NPP in the Builsa North Constituency in the Upper East Region, Achawie Johnson, and the youth, have also given President Akufo-Addo within the week to change the appointment of David Afoko or incur their wrath.

“We want to announce to his excellency that as at now, the constituency is bleeding so he should revise this thing or hold it.We know the people the President is appointing. We know them. David Afoko is my direct uncle, but we are not looking at families, we are looking at commitment and loyalty. We just want his nomination withdrawn. The President should come up with a different name.

Majority of assembly members of the Tolon District Assembly in the Northern Region are mobilizing their people to demonstrate against government over their communities’ exclusion from the rural electrification grid.

According to the aggrieved assembly members Spokesperson, A. Rahaman A. Dohbia, about 52 communities within three Area Councils are not connected to the rural electrification grid.

They have therefore given government a one week ultimatum to respond to their plea or else they will campaign against President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in their electoral areas.

As the assembly man for Yoggu electoral area, A. Rahaman A. Dohbia accused government of selectively connecting communities that are known to be NDC strongholds in the district.

“The district has six area councils and three of these namely, Tolon Area Council, Tali Area Council and Yoggu Area Council have been constantly neglected when it comes to rural electrification by successive NDC governments: 20 communities connected in 16 years of the NDC rule, only three out of 52 communities in these three area councils have been connected to the national grid.”

“We the concerned assembly members of the Tolon District Assembly have followed and observed with keen interest the history of rural electrification in the district over 24 years now and with the partisan politics taking a centre stage of our local governance structure, discrimination against some areas has assumed a stage that needs to be checked as it poses a threat to the existing peace in the area.”

He recalled that in 2012, the Concerned Assembly Members group presented a petition to government and other relevant statutory bodies over the matter.

This A. Rahaman Dohbia said has been fruitless. “That discriminatory status quo is still maintained and this situation is creating tension in these areas and questions as to how and why these areas are left out remained unanswered.”

He served notice saying, “We are giving the authorities concerned to come out and explain to us circumstances that led to this situation in these areas in unambiguous and comprehensive terms within one week and failure to do so the group will be compelled to organize the people in these communities for a peaceful protest to register our displeasure.”

“We will also like to make it clear that we will at all times stand against any form of discrimination against any area irrespective of the location and whether we are affected or not,” A. Rahaman warned.
