Afua Nana Kyerewah Ababio, Head of Private Banking at The Royal Bank, has been adjudged winner of the Citi FM’s Best Boss Promotion, out of about fifty (50) entries that were received from employees of different companies nominating their bosses.

The promotion, which ran for about two weeks, sought to honour bosses of various institutions and companies.

Listeners of Citi 97.3 FM were asked to send a write-up of not more than 100 words on why their bosses should be celebrated.

In addition to the write-up, the listeners were also asked to add their contact details, the boss’ position and the company’s name.

The station initiated ‘The Best Boss Promotion’ in celebration of the International Boss’ Day which was held on October 16, 2017.

The International Boss’ Day is set aside for employees to thank their bosses for being kind and fair throughout the year.

The day was created for the purpose of strengthening the bond between employers and employees.

The promo gave listeners the opportunity to win daily prizes and an exclusive party for a boss and 30 of their staff.

Afua will be celebrated today [Tuesday], on the Traffic Avenue hosted by Jessica Opare Saforo, ahead of a party to be organised for her and 30 of her staff on 11th November, 2017 at Peduase Valley Resort.

A child’s risk of obesity and diabetes might be pre-programmed in the womb before it is even born, German scientists have found.

The study is the first direct evidence that the foetal brain response to a dose of sugar given to its mother is associated with the mother’s insulin sensitivity.

This may indicate that the risk of subsequent obesity and diabetes may be pre-programmed in the womb.

Children of obese and diabetic mothers already have an increased risk for type 2 diabetes and obesity in adulthood, independent of their genetic background, and the rate in the general population is rising.

The reason is unclear, although environmental and genetic mechanisms are likely to be involved.

A major genetic mechanism is the so-called foetal programming system, whereby the mother’s exposure to environmental factors can affect programming of the genes in her unborn child.

Scientists aimed to show that the metabolism of a pregnant woman, following a meal, influences foetal brain activity.

A total of 13 healthy pregnant women underwent an oral glucose tolerance test. Insulin sensitivity was determined by glucose and insulin measurements at 0, 60 and 120 minutes.

At each time point, the response of the foetus was examined by recording foetal brain responses to sounds.

The researchers found that after 60 minutes, women who were more insulin-resistant had foetuses that reacted more slowly to the sound test.

When divided into two groups based on insulin sensitivity, the insulin-resistant mothers had foetuses that reacted to the sound at an average of 283 milliseconds, compared with 178 ms for the insulin-sensitive group.

Research author Dr Hubert Preissl, from the University of Tübingen, said: “It is possible that insulin-resistant mothers have higher glucose levels accompanied by increased insulin levels after a meal.

“As glucose passes the placenta, these increased glucose levels induce excess insulin in the foetus. So high insulin levels in the mother may correspond to high insulin levels in the foetus.”

The study, published in Diabetologia, also discusses other possible reasons for the difference in audio response times, which could be the insulin resistance of the mother creating the same effect for a different reason.

Dr Preissl added: “Insulin resistance of the foetal brain may have important consequences for later life. Compared with newborns of non-diabetic women, children of diabetic mothers with poorly controlled glycaemia show neurophysiological impairment and have a higher risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.”

“Lower maternal insulin sensitivity is associated with slower foetal brain responses. These findings provide evidence of a direct effect of maternal metabolism on foetal brain activity and suggest that central insulin resistance may be programmed during foetal development.”

The EU’s top court is considering a test case which could oblige employers to treat obesity as a disability.

Denmark has asked the European Court of Justice to rule on the case of a male childminder who says he was sacked for being too fat.

Karsten Kaltoft weighs about 160kg (25 stone; 350 pounds). He told the BBC that “bad habits” had made him fat but that his size was “no problem” at work.

The court’s final ruling will be binding across the EU.

It is seen as especially significant because of rising obesity levels in Europe and elsewhere, including the US. A survey in England in 2012 found that more than half of adults were obese or overweight.

The Danish courts asked the ECJ judges in Luxembourg to clarify European law in Mr Kaltoft’s case.

‘Doing job properly’

In an interview with the BBC World Service, Mr Kaltoft denied reports that he was unable to bend low enough to tie children’s shoelaces.

Describing his work with children, he said: “I can sit on the floor and play with them, I have no problems like that.”

“I don’t see myself as disabled,” he said. “We hope the outcome is that it’s not OK just to fire a person because they’re fat, if they’re doing their job properly.”

When asked if his employer, Billund local authority, had done anything to help him, he said they had paid for him to go to a gym for three months.

“I tried regular exercise. Of course I don’t run a marathon, but weight training: I did that, it was OK,” he said.

He worked for Billund authority for 15 years and was dismissed, the authority said, because there was a decline in the number of children. No further explanation was given as to why he was selected for dismissal.

Future obligations?

Audrey Williams, an employment discrimination expert at Eversheds law firm, said the judges would have to decide “whether obesity itself should trigger preferential rights, or should only impact where an individual, due to obesity, has other recognised medical issues”.

If the judges decide it is a disability then employers could face new obligations, she told the BBC.

Employers might in future have a duty to create reserved car parking spaces for obese staff, or adjust the office furniture for them, she said.

The judges will have to decide whether obesity is covered under the EU’sEmployment Equality Directive, which outlaws job discrimination on grounds of disability.

Sleeping in a room with too much light has been linked to an increased risk of piling on the pounds, a study shows.

A team at the Institute of Cancer Research in London found women had larger waistlines if their bedroom was “light enough to see across” at night.

However, they caution there is not enough evidence to advise people to buy thicker curtains or turn off lights.

The study of 113,000 women was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

The women were asked to rate the amount of light in their bedrooms at night as:

  • Light enough to read
  • Light enough to see across the room, but not read
  • Light enough to see your hand in front of you, but not across the room
  • Too dark to see your hand or you wear a mask

Their answers were compared to several measures of obesity. Body Mass Index, waist-to-hip ratio and waist circumference were all higher in women with lighter rooms.

Prof Anthony Swerdlow, from the Institute of Cancer Research, told the BBC: “In this very large group of people there is an association between reported light exposure at night and overweight and obesity.

“But there is not sufficient evidence to know if making your room darker would make any difference to your weight.

“There might be other explanations for the association, but the findings are intriguing enough to warrant further scientific investigation.”

Body Clock

One possible explanation is that the light is disrupting the body clock, which stems from our evolutionary past when we were active when it was light in the day and resting when it was dark at night.

Light alters mood, physical strength and even the way we process food in a 24-hour cycle.

Artificial light is known to disrupt the body clock by delaying the production of the sleep hormone melatonin.

Prof Derk-Jan Dijk, from the Surrey Sleep Centre, said there would be no harm in trying to make bedrooms darker.

He told the BBC: “People in general are not aware of the light present in their bedroom, I think people should assess their bedroom and see how easy it would be to make it darker.”

Street lights, some alarm clocks and standby lights on electrical equipment such as televisions could light a room, he said.

“Overall this study points to the importance of darkness,” he concluded.

Cancer

The study was funded by Breakthrough Breast Cancer and the findings emerged from a long-term study to understand the risk factors for breast cancer. Obesity is known to increase the odds of the disease.

Dr Matthew Lam, from the charity, commented: “It’s too early to suggest that sleeping in the dark will help prevent obesity, a known risk factor for breast cancer, but the association is certainly interesting.

“Whilst we are learning more and more each day about the environmental, genetic and lifestyle factors that affect breast cancer risk, it is not yet possible to predict who will get breast cancer, and for women who have been diagnosed with the disease, we can’t yet say what caused it.”
