The financial arm of Thailand’s ultra-rich monarchy has transferred bank shares worth more than $500 million on behalf of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The SEC filing said the Crown Property Bureau, which manages the multi-billion dollar assets of the royal family, had reduced its shares in Siam Commercial Bank by 3.33 percent on October 2.

That stake is worth 16.9 billion baht ($505 million) based on Friday’s closing share price of 151 baht.

The beneficiary of the shares was not specified but the move was carried out on the King’s behalf, the filing said.

The CPB, who now has a 18.14 percent stake in the bank, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The opaque agency does not declare its wealth but analysts estimate it manages between $30-60 billion in assets, making Thai royals among the richest in the world.

The CPB’s financial portfolio ranges from massive property ownership to investments in major companies, such as Siam Commercial Bank and Siam Cement Company.

Like all things regarding Thailand’s secrecy-shrouded monarchy, scrutiny of the CPB is curbed by a draconian defamation law that shields the royal family from criticism.

The transfers come after legal amendments passed in July gave King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who took the throne one year ago after the death of his father, direct control over a committee that oversees the CPB.

Under the previous law, the committee’s chairman was the finance minister, a move meant to ensure some semblance of government oversight.

The move was the latest in a series of steps by the new monarch to consolidate his control over the palace bureaucracy.

All media based in Thailand must self-censor when reporting on the monarchy to avoid violating the lese majeste law.

Former President Jerry Rawlings is seeking a perpetual injunction at the Fast Track High Court to restrain Professor Kwaku Danso-Boafo, Ghana’s ex-High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, from proceeding with the launch of a book the latter has written on Rawlings.

According to Rawlings, the ex-diplomat has breached a contract between them to get his approval of the final draft of the book JJ Rawlings and the Democratic Transition in Ghana, and so should not be allowed to launch and sell it.

Rawlings says the ex-diplomat is taking advantage of him by publishing the book, which he is due to launch on Wednesday, August 20, at the GNAT Teachers Hall in Accra.

Prof Danso-Boafo has pencilled his protagonist as a “Special Guest” to the event, invitation to which was sent to Rawlings only yesterday (Monday).

According to court documents filed by Rawlings, his approving the final work was a precondition for the publishing of the book and even though Prof Danso-Boafo duly sent a transcript of the book to him, he has not yet approved of it because it contained inaccuracies and distortions of the reality.

Rawlings who contends that he has “a proprietary interest in the book,” adds that unless restrained by the Court from launching the book Prof Danso-Boafo “will go ahead and do so to the incalculable detriment to me which cannot be compensated in monetary terms.”

According to Rawlings, Prof Danso-Boafo approached him sometime in 2006 and requested to write a book on him, to which he gave his blessing on condition that he would approve of the final contents.

He said consistent with the agreement between the two, Prof Danso-Boafo released the manuscript to him when he completed his draft of the book.

“On 1st March 2012, my office delivered a letter to the Defendant/ Respondent, at all material times, Ghana’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom acknowledging receipt of the transcript of the book aforementioned.”

“In the said letter, I was emphatic that I handed over the transcript to a team of literary and legal experts to evaluate and recommend amendments where necessary given the undeniable fact that the Defendant/Respondent’s whole academic enterprise centres primarily on my person.”

“This is against the backdrop that the manuscript delivered to me by the Defendant/Respondent contained several inaccuracies, misinformation and slants which has the potential to poison Ghana’s historical records and democratic evolution as well as bringing my name and family into disrepute.”

Subsequently, the writ says Prof Danso-Boafo sent text messages to Rawlings seeking to be allowed to go ahead with the publication without his final perusal of same, which he flatly refused.

Rawlings said Prof Danso-Boafo has breached his own solemn undertaking with him and in publishing the book also failed to extend due courtesy to him, for all of which he is seeking among other reliefs, “An order of perpetual injunction restraining the Defendant, his publishers, agents, assigns, hirelings or otherwise howsoever from launching and selling the book entitled “J.J. Rawlings and the Democratic Transition in Ghana”.

It was not immediately known if Prof Danso-Boafo had duly been served with the court processes as he was not immediately available for comment while sources close to him said he had travelled to Kyebi in the Eastern region.

Former President Jerry John Rawlings is sponsoring boxers, Braimah ‘Bukom Banku’ Kamoko and Ayittey Powers, to the Brazil 2014 World Cup to support the Black Stars, it has been reported.

President Rawlings decided to sponsor the two boxers to Brazil for the World Cup as a reward for bringing back some excitement in boxing with their ‘Judgement Night’ bout a few weeks ago, Ghanasoccernet.com reported Thursday.

The ex-President was at ring side at the Accra Sports Stadium when  Banku pummelled to win the bout by a unanimous points decision.
Banku reportedly confirmed the news in an interview with Accra-based Happy FM.

“JJ [the former President] bought our tickets for us to Brazil.

“I will be at the Black Stars camp to give them morale [sic] and support. We pray and hope that they will bring back the cup,” he was quoted as saying.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group G, alongside Germany, Portugal and the USA. They kick off their campaign against the USA on June 16.

The Deputy Minority Leader, Mr Dominic Nitiwul says the former president, Jerry Rawlings, should behave like a statesman and stop dividing the nation with his comments.

According to him, Mr Rawlings’ comments have the likelihood of creating misunderstanding not only within the NDC, but the nation as a whole.

Mr Nitiwul made these remarks following an earlier comment made by the former president which sought to indict the memory of the former chairman of the National Development Planning Committee, Mr PV Obeng.

Mr Rawlings had claimed that the late P.V. Obeng was among some leading members of the NDC who advised the late President Atta Mills not to investigate the corrupt acts of government officials of the NPP regime.

However, speaking on Joy FM, Mr Nitiwul noted that, “In fact that is not the first time, when the late president died, he did the same thing. He divided the nation by his comments, he divided the NDC by his comments and that is exactly what he is seeking to do…I’m sorry but I think that the former president should realise that he is a former president.”

He stated further that the NPP government did not engage in any corrupt dealings and that was evident in the number of cases which were lost by the NDC government when they sought to prosecute some members of the NPP.

“I can count more that 12 to 15 people who have gone to court and they lost all of those cases. They lost as many as 18 cases, as many as 18 cases, they took them to court they all lost. So he should not think that the NPP has committed some crime and somebody decided that lets cover up,” he said.

Mr Nitiwul noted that the former president was fond of making divisive comments and advised him to refrain from such acts since they had the likelihood of plunging the nation into chaos.

“He should behave like a statesman. If he does, we will all accord him that respect. Every day, anytime he seeks to denigrate the NPP, it will not help, it will not help him, it will not help the NDC, it will not help us as a nation,” he stated

Former President John Rawlings in a tribute to the late Paul Victor Obeng, has described him as a man who paid his dues to the socio-political development of Ghana in diverse ways.

“As a politician, technocrat and professional he paid his dues in diverse ways and his loss is a national loss. He had his imperfections but he was still a rare gem of a man,” he said.

The ex-President stated that Mr. Obeng “was one of our [Ghana] most adept and captivating minds.”

“On behalf of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings and the rest of the family I extend heartfelt condolences to his wife and family,” he added.

The late PV Obeng, as he is affectionately called, died on Saturday after a suspected asthma attack.

He was reportedly driving on the Spintex road when the incident happened but was rushed to the LEKMA Hospital where he died shortly after.

His body has since been deposited at the 37 Military Hopsital in Accra.

Until his untimely death, PV Obeng was the senior advisor to the President, John Mahama and the chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC).

He served under the Rawlings administration, that of the late President John Mills and the sitting President, John Mahama.

He was a mechanical engineer and a politician.

Former President John Rawlings has pointed out that while working to end the activities of Boko Haram in Nigeria, it is imperative to take a look at the root causes which give rise to such developments.

In a statement, the ex-President stated that “Boko Haram has made its point. However making such a point at the expense of the lives of innocent people – men, women and children is simply unacceptable.”

He noted that “the ease with which various local activists perpetrated acts of piracy and kidnapping on the oil coast of Nigeria was the first sign of our vulnerability.”

Mr. Rawlings mentioned that “military might and force is not enough to overcome terrorists with conviction.”

“I am in the name of Allah pleading for the return of the girls back to their families,” he pleaded.

There is frantic search in Nigeria to find the over 200 girls who were abducted in a school in northern Nigeria.

They were abducted from their boarding school on April 14 but they are yet to be found.

The Nigerian government has given the assurance the girls will be found and delivered to their parents safely.

The United States, Britain and France have volunteered in the search for the girls.

There is also a worldwide campaign through which people are demanding the release of the girls.

Boko Haram earlier threatened to sell the girls, but in a fresh video released on Monday, the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau said the children would be held until all imprisoned militants had been freed.

Nigeria’s Interior Minister, Abba Moro has however rejected the deal, saying, it as “absurd” for a “terrorist group” to try to set conditions.
