A former National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP, Michael Teye Nyaunu is upset over Valerie Sawyerr’s attacks on the NDC’s founder, Jerry John Rawlings.

He described her biting tirade at Mr. Rawlings as disappointing and insulting and said she had soiled herself with this conduct.

On Eyewitness News, Mr. Teye Nyaunu questioned how “she could stoop so low and call JJ names.”

He added that it was especially insulting and shameful for someone with no deep roots in the NDC to “insult the founder like that.”

“As a matter of fact, when the revolution founded, where was she and what role did she play to the extent that she could now insult the founding father like this – I am disappointed in her,” Mr. Teye Nyaunu stated.

Valerie Sawyerr’s comments came in an article where she expressed outrage at Mr. Rawlings for his consistent criticisms of the NDC. She said he was “still flogging a dead horse” even though the party was now in opposition.

She said Mr. Rawlings was so obsessed with the NDC that he was prepared to destroy anyone and anything in the NDC if that will suit his agenda to be in the driving seat.

NDC failing after humiliating election defeat

But if this was the state of tensions within the NDC, Mr. Nyaunu said it did not bode well for the party’s prospects moving forward “following the humiliation of the December election.”

“It  will be difficult for the NDC to come back if this is what is raging at the top… if she could write an article like this then it means we have reached a critical stage in the life of this NDC organisation,” he said.

“We are not ready to rather go back, try to reassess what went wrong with that, draw up new strategies and she is throwing tantrums into the air to the extent that she will go down the drain and insult the founder like that. I am disappointed in her and that is a shame.”

Mr. Teye Nyaunu further rubbished the sentiment that Valarie Sawyerr’s actions were bold, as she purported in her piece, as “there is the difference between boldness and disrespect. This is an insult. It is not a matter of boldness. It is an insult.”

Sack Rawlings from NDC if…

A member of the NDC, Alhaji Bature, also adding to the fallout, called on the party to sack its founder, Jerry John Rawlings because of comments made before and after the 2016 general elections which have brought the party into disrepute.

He said the NDC could learn from the New Patriotic Party, which has demonstrated that nobody is beyond discipline in the political party given it has sanctioned high ranking members in the past.

Former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for the Lower Manya Krobo Constituency, Michael Teye Nyaunu, has described as disrespectful, the US government’s decision to withdraw protocol visa services for former Ghanaian Presidents who intend travelling to the United States for unofficial visits.

The US Ambassador, Robert P. Jackson, on Thursday told Ghanaian Parliamentarians that the US had withdrawn protocol visa allocation to top Ghanaian government officials including Members of Parliament and former Presidents on non-official visits.

[contextly_sidebar id=”uvWTGnYY71WcspW1VYjrPJZWRYsE9FVY”]But the former MP said the government must oppose what he describes as blatant disrespect shown by the US authorities to former Ghanaian Presidents.

“I think that a former president should be given protocol at all times and anytime they want to go to the US. What are they going to do? What illegality are they going to perpetuate?”

“I could remember one time when we were traveling with one of our speakers and they went and searched him like he was carrying cocaine; we protested. Why do they have to treat former presidents like that? It doesn’t show respect to us at all, and I think that they should reconsider that position.”

He said government might soon send a formal complaint to the White House over the issue since it does not auger well for Ghana.

“I think government is going to write a formal complaint through their Embassy to the White House and tell them that it doesn’t show much respect to us and considering our relations with America, it doesn’t auger well for us.  I agree that some people abuse the privileges, but not the former presidents, none of them have done such before,” he added.

Why the visa ban

Explaining his outfit’s position to members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament after an earlier letter informing Parliament about the decision, Mr Jackson said: “As for the protocol, normally if you are applying for official travel there is no personal appearance required so there is no reason for your parliamentary protocol officer to come to the Embassy whatever.”

“The normal channel will be for him to pass the visas and passport to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, and their protocol people will be permitted to come to the Embassy, and we will do everything we can to process those visas within 48 hours of receipt. If you are travelling for tourism or business that is not related to government business, you will be required to make a personal appearance even with former Presidents. There are no exceptions.”

This directive follows a similar position taken by the UK High Commission on the issuance of visas for personal visits after some four Members of Parliament were alleged to have engaged in visa fraud.

The United States Embassy in Ghana has since released a statement explaining that the notification on visa allocations to government officials, including MPs and former Presidents visiting the US unofficially is in accordance with already existing US law.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Lower Manya Krobo constituency has suspended former Member of Parliament, Michael Teye Nyaunu, along with three other party members in the constituency, for misconduct.

According to the NDC’s Constituency Chairman, David Walter Hormelu, they took the decision in accordance with the party’s constitution which stipulates that any member found to have contravened the party’s laws must step aside for a period of six months for investigations.

Mr. Hormelu did not outline the reasons for Mr. Teye Nayaunu’s suspension but said he had been carrying out activities in the constituency perceived to be against the NDC.

“Honourable Teye Nyaunu and the three others misconducted themselves which is an act against the party’s constitution and we decided to refer them to the disciplinary committee for investigations and then recommendations. Per the constitution, they have to step aside for that investigation to go on.”

“They have committed several offences which I am not permitted to be talking about because the matter is before the committee. What I do know very well is that in misconducting himself, he has been carrying out activities in the constituency which are likely to embarrass the party and to bring the party’s name or image into disrepute.,” he explained to Citi News.

Mr. Teye Nyaunu’s most recent major involvement in the NDC saw him lead the NDC’s 2016 campaign team in Lower Manya Krobo, Yilo Krobo, Upper Manya Krobo, Akropong and other constituencies in Akuapem-Krobo enclave in the Eastern Region.

His time in the NDC has however not been without controversy as he once broke ranks to endorse the candidature of Nana Konadu Rawlings when she left the party to form the National Democratic Party (NDP) after a failed flagbearership bid within the NDC.

He also forfeited his membership of the National Democratic Congress to contest as an independent parliamentary candidate in the 2012 elections.
