All is not well for Snapchat. The app has ticked off its most loyal users with its latest redesignwhich merges your friends’ snap messages with their Stories.

It’s the app’s first major #facepalm. But good news! There’s a way to switch back to the old Snapchat, and we’re gonna show you how do it. But it does come with one big catch.

Twitter user Clare James posted step-by-step instructions Friday on how to revert back to the old Snapchat on iOS, and we confirmed on our own iPhone X that it works!

Just follow these steps:

After you’ve completed all the steps, you should have the old Snapchat again.

Now, for the catch: A Snapchat spokesperson told Mashable that this workaround is only temporary. If you force quit the app and re-open Snapchat, you’ll get the redesigned version again.

In theory, if you never force quit the app, you’ll have the old app forever. But at some point, you might need to quit the app (maybe your phone freezes or the app crashes) and then you’ll be forced onto the new app.

Snapchat declined to tell us how long this workaround will last.

You could also lose your Memories if you reinstall Snapchat. Snapchat suggests you back them up for safety:

Reverting back to the old update also means you won’t get the new features. But, WORTH IT, if you loathe the new Snapchat redesign as much as Chrissy Teigen does.

No word on whether there’s any way to revert back to the old Snapchat on Android (even if it’s temporary). We’ll update this story if any workarounds pop up.

Facebook says it is changing the way its news delivery service works by focusing on local news sources in its drive for “high quality” content.

“Local news helps us understand the issues that matter in our communities,” explained chief executive Mark Zuckerberg on his page on Monday.

The update will initially apply to the US before it is rolled out more widely.

It comes after Facebook announced that it was making posts from businesses, brands and media less prominent.

“Starting today, we’re going to show more stories from news sources in your local town or city,” Mr Zuckerberg said in his post.

“If you follow a local publisher or if someone shares a local story, it may show up higher in News Feed,” he added.

Mr Zuckerberg said that Facebook users who are made aware of what is happening in their communities will be more likely to get involved and “make a difference”.

“Research suggests that reading local news is directly correlated with civic engagement,” he said.

He added that the changes were part of the company’s drive to show more “high quality, trusted news”.

In a company statement, Facebook said that the “See First” feature will allow users to choose which news sources, including local or national publications, they want to see at the top of their feeds.

The social media company is making a series of changes to its website and app following criticism over the appearance of misleading news and misinformation in users’ feeds.

The company has acknowledged that media organisations posting on its site may see the popularity of their posts decrease as a result.

Earlier this month, Mr Zuckerberg said that he and his team felt a responsibility to make sure that Facebook was good for people’s wellbeing.

If public content is to be promoted, he said at the time, it will now have to be seen to encourage community interaction.

Uber has announced that it is offering a new insurance policy for anyone who uses the app in Ghana.

The insurance is being provided by Star Assurance Company Limited and will provide riders with personal accident insurance, which covers the rider’s medical expenses after an accident, as well as compensation for death or permanent disability suffered by a rider while on a trip with Uber.

“At Uber, we view the addition of this insurance coverage as an important part of fulfilling our goal of reliable, affordable and safe transportation options for all Ghanaians. This is an innovative and first of its kind solution for Uber riders in Ghana and has been tailored specifically for those on the road, building on Uber’s security already available through the app,” said Kofi Agyare, Country Manager of Uber Ghana.

Uber was launched in Accra, Ghana, in 2016. When it was launched in June that year, the service was only available in Accra but was later expanded to Kumasi.

About Uber

Uber Technologies Inc. is a global taxi technology company headquartered in San Francisco, California, United States, operating in over 630 cities worldwide.

In Ghana, Uber is present in the national capital Accra, and the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi. Hundreds of drivers have jumped onto the platform to make a living either on a full-time or part-time basis.

Founded in 2009, Uber develops, markets and operates the Uber car transportation. In some cities, Uber also engages in food delivery mobile apps.

In recent times, there had been arguments about whether Uber was a transport company or a technology service provider.

Within Europe, that argument has been settled, after the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled that Uber is a transport company.

The ride-hailing firm argued it was an information society service – helping people to make contact with each other electronically – and not a cab firm.

As noted earlier today by Android Police, Google has stopped selling the Pixel C through its online store. It’s a quiet and not unexpected end for the company’s well-received tablet, designed to make room for Google’s latest and greatest.

The company confirmed with TechCrunch that the end of sale also represents the end of life for the device, though Google added that it plans to continue supporting the hardware moving forward.

“As is common when a device has been out for a few years, we’re now retiring Pixel C and it is no longer available for sale,” the company said in a statement. “However, we are committed to updating and supporting it, including the recent update to Android 8.0, so customers can continue to get the best out of their device.”

And, of course, the statement wouldn’t be complete without a plug for its new premium Chromebook. “Our newly launched Google Pixelbook combines the best parts of a laptop and a tablet for those looking for a versatile device.”

Frederic gave the tablet good marks in a review back in 2015, but noted, “There is a market for the C, but I think it’ll be a small one.” That seems to be the case with many of the Google-branded devices, which means the company is essentially competing against itself for a relatively small slice of market share.

The shift from the C to Pixelbook does represent something of a larger trend for the industry in recent years, as many have moved from slates to convertibles. The Pixelbook isn’t as slim as a standalone tablet, and there are certain sacrifices when shifting between any form factors, but it’s a pretty solid tablet replacement for most instances. It’s also a much more well-rounded computing device.

The one big caveat here, however, is the price. The Pixel C started at $599 (plus keyboard); the Pixelbook’s lowest SKU is $999. The tablets of the future are going to be much more versatile than their predecessors — and it’s definitely going to cost you.

Instagram’s feed will now show users recommended posts – a change that earlier this month was spotted while in testing, and has since quietly gone live. The feature, described here in the company’s Help documentation, will suggest posts for you based on those that have been liked by other accounts you follow.

The new section, “Recommended for You,” is clearly labelled so as not to be confused with your own home feed. It will contain three to five suggested posts, we’re told.

This isn’t the first time Instagram has offered recommended content. But previously, you’d have to head to the Explore section to see recommended posts and videos – they wouldn’t be pushed to your home feed. You could also see what posts friends have been liking in the Following section if you chose.

The injection of recommended content is a fairly big change for Instagram’s feed – perhaps one of the largest since the switch from the chronological feed to the algorithmic one, or the introduction of ads. It means users scrolling through their home feed will now no longer only see posts from accounts they directly follow alongside the ads. They’ll see things from their wider network, too – not entirely different from Facebook’s new Explore feed, in fact.

The change comes shortly after another update also focused on broadening users’ access to content beyond what’s being posted to those accounts you explicitly follow. Earlier this month, the company introduced a way to allow users to follow hashtags – in other words, you can now follow your interests, not just accounts.

But unlike the hashtags feature, which is opt-in (as you choose if you want to track hashtags and, if so, which ones), you can’t really disable the new recommendations.

As the Help documentation explains, you can only choose to temporarily hide the “Recommended for You” section. This is done by tapping the three-dot menu above the post, then tapping on “Hide.”

The good news is that the “Recommended for You” section is not meant to displace the content you care about in favour of Instagram’s own suggestions. Rather, the section will appear after you’ve viewed all the posts in your feed, an Instagram spokesperson explains while confirming the feature’s public launch to TechCrunch.

But even still, its appearance has irked some users, who prefer the classic experience – including, in many cases, the chronological feed.

Instagram says the feature, which is available on both iOS and Android, is currently rolling out. It didn’t confirm when that rollout would complete and become available to all of Instagram’s user base.

Two class action lawsuits have been launched against Apple in the US following the tech giant’s admission that it slows down older models of the iPhone as they age.

Apple has said that it did this to “prolong the life” of the devices and maximise diminishing battery power.

The lawsuits were filed in California and Chicago by groups of iPhone users representing others, who they claim have suffered “economic damage”.

Apple has been contacted for comment.

In the California court papers, Stefan Boganovich and Dakota Speas, who both live in LA, cite loss of use, loss of value and the purchase of new batteries as reasons for compensation, claiming that iPhone owners never consented to the “interference”

James Vlahakis, of the Sulaiman Law Group is representing the plaintiffs in the Chicago legal action.

“Apple’s failure to inform consumers these updates would wreak havoc on the phone’s performance is being deemed purposeful, and if proven, constitutes the unlawful and decisive withholding of material information,” he said in a statement.

Mr Vlahakis added that in his view it would be a “direct violation” of consumer fraud-related legislation in Illinois, Indiana and North Carolina, where the complainants are based.

Facebook has defended itself against claims that using the site can damage wellbeing and mental health.

In a blogpost, it said while there was evidence it could negatively affect mood, the way it affected people was determined by how they used it.

Facebook’s downsides could be combated by making more use of the site and interacting positively, it said.

A social media expert said the way Facebook was built made it hard to use it in those better ways.

Active use

Questions about the impact of Facebook came into focus last week, following comments from Sean Parker, Facebook’s first president, and Chamath Palihapitiya, a former executive at the company.

Mr Parker said the site set up “feedback loops” that helped to ensure people kept coming back.

Mr Palihapitiya said the social network was “ripping society apart” and exploited human psychology to maintain its hold on its users.

In response, Facebook said it had changed a lot in the six years since Mr Palihapitiya left and was no longer interested in just expanding its user base.

In the more recent blog, Facebook’s director of research, David Ginsberg, said there was a continuing internal debate at the company about whether time spent on social media was good for people.

Mr Ginsberg said there had been “compelling research” that linked a rise in depression among teenagers to rising consumption of social media and that looked at the way technology had changed relationships.

But set against these disadvantages were benefits that showed social-media use could improve peoples’ moods and help maintain the social ties that directly influenced wellbeing and resilience.

What made the difference, he said, was how people used Facebook.

“Just like in person, interacting with people you care about can be beneficial, while simply watching others from the sidelines may make you feel worse,” wrote Mr Ginsberg.

Facebook logo

Being more active on Facebook and proactively engaging with people was better than just passively consuming updates and posts, he said.

Facebook was now engineering the site to help people be active participants instead of just spectators, Mr Ginsberg said.

It had also created tools, such as the Take A Break feature, which let people manage how they interacted with former partners, to help limit emotional fallout.

Dr Bernie Hogan, a senior research fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute who has written extensively about Facebook, was sceptical about how easy it would be for people to use the site for “positive interaction”.

“What the researchers are valiantly trying to do is set out what they believe is a good way to use Facebook,” he said. “What they are not talking about is how that course is not what Facebook is being designed for.”

“They are saying that the solution is more interactivity, more personal feedback and less broadcasting,” he said. “The problem is that they are engineering tools for more broadcasting.”

Reddit today is giving its mobile apps a major upgrade – the first since their launch last year when the company decided to take back control over the official Reddit experience on mobile – an experience that had long been available mainly through third-party clients. Today’s updated apps introduce a number of new features focused on media consumption – including how it handles photos, videos and GIFs – plus the addition of things like live comment feeds, in-app chat, tools for moderators and more.

Some of the features seem inspired by work from other third-party clients.

For example, the new Theater Mode option on iOS lets users browse media in what Reddit calls a “video-first” format. This allows users to open media, like original video, in a full-screen experience. They can also choose to view the content in landscape mode and swipe back and forth between media.

While this is an obvious next step for Reddit on mobile, it’s worth noting that a full-screen media mode is one of the features that made the new third-party Reddit app, Apollo, so well-received earlier this year. (Apollo’s media mode doesn’t let you scroll to the next image, however.)

Similarly, the ability to open links in Safari (via Safari View Controller) on iOS instead of using Reddit’s native in-app browser is another feature you can find in Apollo. This has also been among one of the users’ top requests, Reddit says.

Other features, however, push the Reddit clients into new territory while leveraging their position as the official mobile apps.

For example, Reddit’s iOS app will now support live comments, turning Reddit into a more real-time experience, and making it feel similar to Twitter.

Employees have tested this feature for some time ahead of today’s arrival, but now it’s becoming publicly available. The feature makes sense for a variety of posts, whether that’s real-time comment threads on NFL gameday posts, or updates about natural disasters and aid as on the Hurricane Harvey mega thread.

iOS is also the first official Reddit app to get chat.

This feature has also been in beta testing ahead of today with thousands of Reddit users across the site. Now, as chat becomes available on mobile, users can choose to opt in the beta (but only for 1 to 1 chats for the time being.)

Several other new features are designed to make Reddit’s apps more functional, while others are about building community.

Users and moderators can now add “post flair” on both iOS and Android – a tool to distinguish different types of content. A new comment speed read button on Android lets users jump between the top-level comments in a discussion. Another change ensures that the original poster (OP)’s username is always visible, even from the Home feed.

Meanwhile, both iOS and Android users will enjoy a cake icon by their name on their “Cake Day” – a Reddit tradition that celebrates a user’s anniversary of when they first joined the site. Users’ trophy case – which displays accomplishments like the best comment, beta test participation, length of time on Reddit and more – will also now be displayed on mobile.

Another group of features launching today are designed for Reddit’s moderators.

This includes the ability to switch on “Mod mode” to approve, remove, and flag content from iOS and Android – or even bulk approve, remove, or flag items, for those in charge of larger communities. Moderators can also access the beta and existing Modmail experiences and can update the list of moderators and approved submitters from their phone, across both iOS and Android.

Reddit says it has simplified other moderator tasks, too, like banning, muting and reporting.

The company’s decision to focus more heavily on mobile with the launch of its own native apps -which also replace the app it acquired, Alien Blue – came about because of the increasing influx of mobile users and mobile-first users.

At the time of the launch, Reddit said that half its user base browsed the site on mobile, including both via mobile web and third-party applications. It knew that it needed to better serve those users by staking its own claim on mobile where it could more carefully craft the user experience it wanted to deliver.

Today, Reddit says it has over 330 million monthly active users, who post more than 9 million times per month, and ~370,000 times per day. It also notes that younger users prefer mobile, with 58 percent of those 18 through 34 preferring mobile web and mobile apps only. Pageview growth across Reddit has doubled since early 2016, and mobile engagement is higher than on desktop, the company also notes.

In addition, Reddit generates revenue through advertising, including on mobile. To do so effectively, it needs to have more control over the native app experience in order to offer features for advertisers such as the recently introduced support for mobile app attribution through integrations with partners like Tune, Adjust and Kochava for app install ads, or just to simply better cater to advertisers who want to target mobile in particular.

The new Reddit apps are going live today on the iOS App Store and Google Play.

Google will dedicate more than 10,000 staff to rooting out violent extremist content on YouTube in 2018, the video sharing website’s chief has said.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Susan Wojcicki said some users were exploiting YouTube to “mislead, manipulate, harass or even harm”.

She said the website, owned by Google, had used “computer-learning” technology that could find extremist videos.

More than 150,000 of these videos have been removed since June, she said.

In March, the UK government suspended its adverts from YouTube, following concerns they were appearing next to inappropriate content.

And in a speech at the United Nations general assembly in September, UK Prime Minister Theresa May challenged tech firms to take down terrorist material in two hours.

The prime minister has repeatedly called for an end to the “safe spaces” she says terrorists enjoy online.

Ms Wojcicki said that staff had reviewed nearly two million videos for violent extremist content since June.

This is helping to train the company’s machine learning technology to identify similar videos, which is enabling staff to remove nearly five times as many videos as they were previously, she said.

She said the company was taking “aggressive action” on comments, using technology to help staff find and shut down hundreds of accounts and hundreds of thousands of comments.

And its teams “work closely with child safety organisations around the world to report predatory behaviour and accounts to the correct law enforcement agencies”.

Meanwhile, police in the UK have warned that sex offenders are increasingly using live online streaming platforms to exploit children.

Earlier this year, Google announced it would give a total of £1m ($1.3m) to fund projects that help counter extremism in the UK.

And, in June, YouTube announced four new steps it was taking to combat extremist content:

  • Improving its use of machine learning to remove controversial videos
  • Working with 15 new expert groups, including the Anti-Defamation League, the No Hate Speech Movement, and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue.
  • Tougher treatment for videos that are not illegal but have been flagged by users as potential violations of its policies on hate speech and violent extremism
  • Redirecting people who search for certain keywords towards a playlist of curated YouTube videos that directly confront and debunk violent extremist messages

Calum Chace, author of Surviving AI and The Economic Singularity, said that machine learning is developing fast.

“People are often unduly cynical about the prospects for AI because they judge it by what is possible today,” he said.

“They forget that our machines are on an exponential growth curve: they get twice as powerful every 18 months or so. This means that we are just at the beginning of their story.

“Although YouTube’s automated systems are probably among the best in the world since it is a subsidiary of Google, they need human support. For now.”

How young is too young to be on social media?

Strictly speaking, only those aged 13 and over are allowed to use Facebook. But the prevention methods are trivial, meaning more than 20 million under-13-year-olds are thought to be using the network.

So on Monday, Facebook launched its first app tailored for young users. It’s a ringfenced network that needs parental approval before use, and will not – the company has promised – be used to feed data for advertising.

Messenger Kids is a simplified, locked-down version of the messaging app Facebook today offers those over 13.

“Parents are increasingly allowing their children to use tablets and smartphones, but often have questions and concerns about how their kids use them and which apps are appropriate,” said Loren Cheng, product manager for Messenger Kids.

“So when we heard about the need for better apps directly from parents during research and conversations with parents, we knew we needed to develop it alongside the people who were going to use it, as well as experts who could help guide our thinking.”

Approved friends

If two children want to be friends on Messenger Kids, that friendship has to be approved by a parent for each child. Once confirmed to be safe, friends can do live video chat and send pictures and text to each other.Parental controls are designed to make sure communications are safe and approved

There will also be “a library of kid-appropriate and specially chosen GIFs, frames, stickers, masks and drawing tools lets them decorate content and express their personalities”.

Approved adults can also contact children through the app – although they will get their messages through the normal Facebook Messenger app.

Messenger Kids will of course collect data: the child’s name, the content of the messages, and typical usage reports for how the app is used.

Facebook will share that information with third parties, which must have data protection policies that comply with Coppa, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act in the US.

The next generation

Facebook has promised the data will not be used in any way to power the “grown up” Facebook.

Facebook has added an array of effects to make the video chat more enjoyable for children

That’s important – the obvious commercial benefit to this new app might be to target ads to parents based on what their kids are talking about. Or use what was discussed in Messenger Kids to target ads at teens as they graduate into over-13 Facebook.

Neither of those things would happen, Facebook said. The app doesn’t know specifically how old the children signing up are, so users will not be prompted to move onto Facebook when they are old enough.

If a child does decide to join full Facebook, it will be a brand new account with no data carried over from what was said on Messenger Kids.

Having youngsters graduate onto Facebook proper is of key strategic importance for the company as it seeks to make sure it is the social network of choice for the next generation of users.

If it can capture the attention of 6 to 12-year-olds before Snapchat (or some other competitor) can, then chances are those same kids will naturally progress into using Facebook as teenagers and young adults. It is this demographic causing them the most headaches right now.

Likes

But business sense aside, you have to ask: should children that young be using social media at all? Sean Parker, one of Facebook’s early investors and its first president, recently opined on the negative impact of the service he helped create.

“God only knows what it’s doing to our children’s brains,” he said, reflecting on the small “dopamine hit” we get when someone gives us a “like” on social media.

The “like” mechanism is a key part of Messenger Kids – and as a society we might wonder if we want to introduce children as young as six to the concept of online peer validation. Six-year-olds should be playing with worms, not getting FOMO.

Others want broader transparency on the various privacy issues that arise from the launch of this app. Facebook’s blogpost on Monday was carefully crafted to alleviate various anticipated worries, and name-dropping experts and agencies that deal with protection of children is a key part of its marketing strategy here.

‘Nice idea… on its face’

There is tentative support for what Facebook is doing. The prevailing mood is that since kids are using social networks, you might as do what you can to make sure that use is safe and monitored.

Common Sense Media, a US non-profit “dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families”, has looked extensively at the proliferation of social media use among young children.

“A messenger app for kids under 13 that only parents can sign them up for sounds like a nice idea on its face,” said James Steyer, the organisation’s chief executive.

“But without clear policies about data collection, what happens to the content children post, and plans for the future, it is impossible to fully trust the platform.

“We appreciate that for now, the product is ad-free and appears designed to put parents in control. But why should parents simply trust that Facebook is acting in the best interest of kids?”

Facebook knows this move into looking after far more vulnerable users will be watched extremely closely. Any harmful content that makes its way onto Messenger Kids will be a major issue for the firm.

As YouTube found out when disturbing videos found their way onto YouTube Kids, trying to make a child-safe space is difficult – a minority of people will always be looking at ways to get around protections.

The app is only available in the US on Apple’s iOS operating system initially.
