Iddrisu Musah Superior, the Metropolitan Chief Executive Officer(MCE) of Tamale, Northern Regional capital, has arrived in Washington D. C, the United States on an investment tour.

His decision to tour the United States to seek investment was preceded by a similar one he undertook in Ghana where he had major responses from corporate Ghana and business institutions.

The main reason for the US tour is to engage business institutions, individuals and strategic institutions that could mobilise resources for the development of the Tamale Metropolis.

The MCE is scheduled to meet US Former President Bill Clinton, Founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg and some diplomats in Virginia.

He is also scheduled to meet officials of Louisville to revive a broken 35 year-long Sister–City relationship with the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly.

In a telephone interview with journalists, Mr. Musah Superior indicated that, he planned to have broader and wider discussions with the individuals and institutions on how to mobilize resources to harness the development of Tamale and the nation at large.

“Another reason for our tour is to attend the 61st Anniversary of the Sister-City National Conference in Virginia from July 13-15.”

He said: “the agenda to revive the relationship with Louisville requires discussions with the city authorities.”

The MCE said the support for development from the Central government was inadequate, hence there was the need to move around the world to mobilize investors into the Metropolis.

He said this would be done by bringing to the fore an innovative type of leadership in marketing the Tamale Metropolis to the outside world.

Leadership of the Tamale branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), today (Tuesday) defied the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly’s order for relocation of the main lorry station near the State Transport Company (STC) yard.

The Metropolitan Security Task Force gave the GPRTU leadership 10 days ultimatum to relocate to the Kukuo market which elapsed on Monday.

[contextly_sidebar id=”doSzCYRdHEN14ALdWDkpXZqnd5wVOKOZ”]The drivers led by their leadership in red armbands however refused the proposed relocation.

According to them, the Kukuo market is not conducive for their operations.

They vowed never to kowtow to the Tamale Metropolitan Security Task-Force order until the Kukuo market is suitable. Secretary to the Tamale-Walewale local union, Dan Bawah, accused the city authorities of ineptitude in handling the situation.

“The District Assembly came out and said that we should leave the premises and go to the Kukuo market. Actually when they came and we went to the Kukuo market, there was no shelter and no offices even for us. Then we told them that this place is not conducive for travelling, and that we are going to punish our passengers.”

“They said they gave us 10 days ultimatum and yesterday [Monday] was the deadline, and up till now they have not gone back to the Kukuo market to do anything. So we also said we can’t move there and that is our stance now.”

He lamented that “The other day when we met them and they gave us the 10 days ultimatum, the Task-Force came and towed some cars out and disgraced our leadership.”

The Tamale Metropolitan Security Task-Force eviction of the main lorry station forms part of the ongoing decongestion exercise within the business city enclave.

The main lorry station hosts Walewale, Bolga, Savelugu, Yendi, Salaga, Bimbila, Chereponi, Zabzugu and Tatale among other GPRTU local unions.

The Tamale Police Command has deployed personnel to protect all government offices within the metropolis, following reported cases of forced evictions by some perceived New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters.

The supporters besieged the offices of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), threatening to assault workers if they do not vacate the premises.

They subsequently closed the offices of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), and threatened to do same to the metro office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

But the Northern Regional Police says such lawlessness will not be countenanced.

[contextly_sidebar id=”tHRZc5Sg9gYYalAKBnlcZr9iDLWBxbav”]Speaking to Citi News, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh said they would deal with such miscreants.

“Since Tuesday, we have been sending police officers around to protect those places that were vandalized by the irate youth. I must say that we have been protecting other offices already because after the declaration we had some criminal elements who took advantage of this thing and went taking over offices and made away with some items including tricycles belonging to SADA. We have managed to retrieve some of the items while we are looking for some of them,” he noted.

We need MMDCEs to stop seizures

Meanwhile the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Secretary for the Ashaiman Constituency, Chapman Takyi Kodam, is calling for the speedy appointments of MMDCEs, to avert the continuous seizure of public properties by irate party activists.

He made the comments in an interview with Citi News after the Ashaiman Police managed to foil another seizure of a lorry station in Ashaiman.

“It’s very unfortunate that some of these things keep occurring. We have admonished them several times that the president will not tolerate some of those things. Whether we want to take over any facility here, it lies in the hands of the incoming chief executive and the assembly to scrutinize the contracts to make sure that everything is in order before we go after anybody.”

“Having admonished them several times, it keeps occurring, but we will keep talking to them to make sure that the right thing is done. If we will have a chief executive by the end of February, it will help us a lot. We know it is going to take some time, but we are pleading with him that they will consider doing some of these appointments at the local level, so that they will come and put things in order because lack of that is giving us a lot of problems in the municipality.”

Background

There have been reported cases of irate youth vandalizing some government offices ever since the New Patriotic Party’s Nana Akufo-Addo was declared winner of the polls.

Some of the facilities the NPP youth have tried taking over include tollbooths, offices district chief executives, public toilet facilities among others.

The NPP youth have also been accused of attacking members of the National Democratic Congress.
