The vice President, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia on Wednesday, July 26, 2017, led a high powered government team on a fact finding mission to some communities affected by a recent flood disaster in the Tamale Metropolitan Area.

The team assessed the magnitude of the disaster which recorded two deaths while several properties were destroyed in communities including Gumani and Kanvili Tuunaayili.

Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia said the perennial catastrophe required express solutions.

As part of the contingency measures, he served notice that government would have to demolish structures on waterways.

He later empathized with the family of the late Hajia Fati Bapuni who got drowned in her moving vehicle.

Dr. Alhaji Bawumia recognized her as his class one school mate at Sakasaka primary school in Tamale.

Defense Minister, Dominick Nitiwul, Interior Minister Ambrose Dery, Information Minister Mustapha Hamid and National Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Nana Agyemang Prempeh among others accompanied the vice President.

Two persons were confirmed dead following floods caused a heavy rain which lasted for two hours.

Some thatch houses at Gumani, Gumbihini, Kanvili Tuunaayili, Wurishe, Koblimahigu and Fuo submerged while containers livestock and other valuables were carried away.

The flooding situation in the Tamale Metropolitan Area and the Sagnarigu districts are perennial.

Choked drains and building on waterways are some of the root causes which requires immediate action.

A search party has finally found the remains of a school pupil (name withheld) of Methodist Primary School in Tamale who drowned following floods that affected some communities in the Tamale Metropolitan Area.

The corpse was found at Fuo which is one of the flood prone communities in the Tamale Metropolitan Ares.

Meanwhile, hundreds of school pupils did not go to school today Wednesday, July 26.

Parents were afraid to send their wards to private schools located in communities along the Tamale-Bolgatanga highway.

The floods affected private schools including Foundation Hills Academy, Future Leaders Academy and Sandabbi.

In a related development, a government fact finding team has arrived in Tamale to assess the gravity of the floods.

Two persons have been confirmed dead following floods which affected some communities in the Tamale Metropolis, July 25, 2017.

One of deceased has been identified only as Hajia, with the other said to be a basic school pupil. The remains of Hajia have been moved to the Tamale Teaching Hospital Morgue.

Heavy rain, which lasted for two hours, displaced some residents of Gumani, Gumbihini, Kanvili Tuunaayili, Wurishe, Koblimahigu and Fuo.

Some thatch houses in the affected communities were submerged while containers, livestock and other valuables were carried away.

The Northern Regional Secretariat of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) is assessing the gravity of the floods.

The Regional Director, Alhaji Abdallah Hindu told Citi News his office was tabulating the data for onward submission to the NADMO headquarters.

He pleaded with residents living in flood prone areas to relocate for their own safety. Alhaji Abdallah Hindu further cautioned private developers against building on water ways.

The flooding situation in the Tamale Metropolitan Area and the Sagnarigu districts are perennial. Choked drains and building on waterways are some of the root causes which requires immediate action.

Meanwhile, the President has constituted a government delegation to visit the affected area and report back for action to be taken.
