The Takoradi Technical University in the Western Region has awarded a full scholarship to Mr Frank Darko, a student of the University, who invented a bicycle that is ridden on water.

The University announced the decision on its website.

A BBC video of the young Ghanaian inventor in January 2018, went viral on social media.

Darko said he invented the water bicycle because he was saddened by a documentary he watched which showed some school children swimming across a river to get to school.

“I was watching a documentary some years back and I saw school children swimming across a river before going to school. So I told myself, what can I do to help these children and I started thinking. Finally I was able to come up with this idea,” he added.

Mr. Darko said it took him over a year to come up with the invention.

The Vice Chancellor, Reverend Professor John Frank Eshun, according to the website, said the full scholarship was to “motivate Darko to undertake more innovations to solve the challenges in the Ghanaian society and the world at large.”

He indicated that the University was ready to give scholarships to any student who showed interest and prospects in innovation.

Rev. Prof. Eshun expressed joy about the invention and said the University would take up the project, in collaboration with the student, to improve it in order for it to stand the test of time.

He said the University had established an entrepreneurial and innovation incubation centre to assist students with various talents, which they could evolve into business ventures to bring down the unemployment rate.

Frank Darko is a final year student at  TTU pursuing a Graphic Design course but deferred it due to financial challenges.

The Director of ICT Services at Takoradi Technical University (TTU), Timothy Simpson, has called for widespread adoption of modern security surveillance technology as part of efforts to curb the spate of crime in the country.

Speaking to cetgh.com during a ceremony to award certificates to students who successfully completed a professional course on the installation and maintenance of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, Mr. Simpson said crime is less likely to occur in places where security cameras have been installed, since criminals prefer to hide from cameras to avoid being traced.

[contextly_sidebar id=”Y93WemS8sVmuGsErIkTZhpm6dZmbjt69″]He said the mere sight of CCTV hardware can be a deterrent to negative behaviour in general, as CCTV recordings serve as reliable sources of evidence to unravel mysteries behind the crime.

He said the university has partnered with reputable companies to provide hands-on training to students as well as artisans who have no tertiary education, to enable them to provide technological solutions to problems facing the nation.

The Director at the Centre for Business Development and Entrepreneurship (CBDE) at Takoradi Technical University, Philomina Aboagye, said the Centre aims to build relationships between trainees and business owners through intensive professional courses organized during semester breaks.

CEO of ICT firm, Hadatech Visions Limited, Danielson Kwame Klutsey, said his company, as a service provider, plays a complementary role to enable students to acquire practical skills required for the job market.

He said his company’s exit strategy is to continue to engage participants trained on CCTV Camera Installation and Maintenance by assisting them to start their own businesses as well as offering them job opportunities.

In all, 35 people trained from 8th to 20th January were presented with certificates for participating in courses which include: Land Surveying, Machining, AutoCAD in Building Drawing, Transportation of Hazardous Goods as well as Automobile Electronics.

Other courses are Welding and Fabrication, Fashion Design, Photography, Video Production, Millinery and Accessories, Beauty Culture, Laboratory and Workshop Practice, and Computer Graphics.

A former rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Prof. Stephen Adei, has expressed hope in the future of technical education in Ghana through the upgrading of polytechnics to universities.

Speaking at a symposium for staff of Takoradi Technical University on the conversion process, Prof. Addei called on heads of technical universities to learn transformational leadership to enable them implement changes that will make their institutions strong against competition at the tertiary education level.

[contextly_sidebar id=”hvlomgUrMUPtYTOThPb3rsTQkhRIgDtb”]He said the technical university model has the potential to be as successful as GIMPA, which increased its turnover 30 times within a period of nine years under his leadership.

Prof. Adei urged the institution to take advantage of opportunities in the Western Region, by partnering with the ports and players in the oil and gas industry.

He said a new technical university must have a clear mission and vision to produce technologically-inclined, ICT savvy and industry-connected output.

On staffing, Prof. Adei said: “Universities are made by those who are the core professors. To remedy the handicap of becoming a university with a handicap in staff, there must be measures to attract quality and experienced tutors.”

“If you go to a typical polytechnic, a third of the tutors don’t qualify as university lecturers. At a certain time, those people must be out. It is painful, but unless those decisions are taken, you will be a fourth-class university,” he concluded.

Takoradi Technical University, formerly Takoradi Polytechnic, was established as a Government Technical Institute in 1954.

It was upgraded by the Polytechnic Act 321 (PNDC Law 1993) to become part of the Ghana Tertiary Education System, which was later replaced in 2007 by the Polytechnic Law (Act 745).
