Jack Butland’s howler cost Stoke City all three points against Leicester City.

The Potters looked set to climb out of the bottom three ahead of the Saturday afternoon Premier League fixtures after Xherdan Shaqiri’s lovely first-half finish put them ahead.

However, Butland gifted Leicester an equaliser with an own goal midway through the second half when he misjudged a Marc Albrighton cross and converted the ball into his own net.

Leicester had late opportunities to take all three points and hit posts twice but the early kick-off at the King Power Stadium finished all square.

The Foxes made a high-tempo start and put Stoke under some early pressure with a series of corners.

The last presented Matty James with a shooting opportunity but he was unable to keep his effort down.

Stoke were also full of energy early on as they pressed high up the pitch and when Badou Ndiaye won possession on the edge of the Leicester penalty area after 12 minutes, his curling effort brought a decent save from Kasper Schmeichel.

The game became a little scrappy as the first half wore on, as both teams struggled to keep the ball, and such an instance allowed Stoke to strike two minutes before half-time.

Wilfred Ndidi tried too hard to keep the ball in play on the touchline midway inside his own half and Joe Allen nipped in and got a pass away infield to Shaqiri, who was in lots of space.

The Stoke forward advanced towards the penalty area before beating Schmeichel with a low curling effort from 22 yards out.

It was a blow for Leicester so close to the break but the hosts responded well at the beginning of the second half, putting Stoke under pressure once more.

But, just like at the start of the match, the visitors dealt with the danger.

Stoke looked comfortable and Shaqiri almost embarrassed Schmeichel with a second goal just before the hour mark.

Schmeichel took a free-kick from a wide position but his distribution was uncharacteristically poor and the ball went straight to Allen, who passed it to Shaqiri.

With the goalkeeper well out of position, Shaqiri shot from 40 yards out but his effort curled agonisingly wide as Schmeichel scrambled back.

The Dane survived his error but at the other end Butland was not so fortunate in the 70th minute.

When Albrighton drilled in a cross from the right-hand side of the penalty area, it looked like a routine take into the midriff for Butland. However, the ball struck his body and went into the net.

He went some way to making amends shortly afterwards with a superb save to deny Riyad Mahrez. When play developed from the rebound, Harry Maguire struck a post with a fierce shot.

A last-ditch tackle from Charlie Adam thwarted Mahrez once more and from the resulting corner James’ header hit the same post Maguire had struck shortly before.

In the end Stoke were holding on but Lambert may feel his team did enough to earn a vital win.

Mark Hughes has been sacked as manager of Stoke City, just hours after the club’s FA Cup third-round exit at the hands of League Two Coventry City.

A run of five defeats in seven Premier League games also contributed to Hughes’ departure and he leaves with the club in the relegation zone.

Hughes, 54, had been in charge of the Potters for four and a half years.

Stoke, who play Manchester United on 15 January, say they will “look to appoint a new manager as soon as possible”.

A section of Stoke fans called for him to leave and held up banners throughout the 2-1 defeat at the Ricoh Arena.

After the game – his 200th in all competitions as Stoke manager – Hughes said he did not think the defeat changed the situation regarding his future and said it “might be a blessing” for the rest of the season.

Hughes, a former Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers, Fulham and QPR boss, succeeded Tony Pulis at Stoke in May 2013 and was the fourth longest-serving manager at a Premier League club.

The Welshman guided Stoke to three straight ninth-placed finishes, dropping to 13th last season.

A miserable run of form

Hughes rested players as Stoke lost 5-0 at Chelsea on 30 December, saying they were focusing on the Newcastle game on New Year’s Day.

But a 1-0 defeat by the Magpies, who were a point worse off than their opponents before kick-off, put more pressure on Hughes and saw Stoke fall to 18th in the table on goal difference.

Stoke have conceded five or more in three Premier League games this season and have let in a total of 47 goals – seven more than the second-worst tally held by both West Ham and Watford.

The 5-1 defeat by Tottenham at Wembley on 9 December prompted angry fans to confront the Stoke players at the city’s railway station.

After that game, Hughes said there had been “an undercurrent” through his time at the club from fans who were against his appointment.

On Thursday Hughes said he did not need reassurance about his position.

Leicester City have asked about Stoke City target Daniel Opare.

The Ghana international full-back is available for around £3million as he is out of contract with his club Augsburg in the summer.

Stoke City were considered frontrunners for the 27-year-old but the situation surrounding Mark Hughes’s future as manager will influence his decision.

Leicester have been pursuing Andre Almeida at Benfica though he is valued at £9million and Opare can play in both full-back positions.

Leicester beat Huddersfield 3-0 on Monday and are eighth in the league table.

West Ham, Swansea and Wolves have also asked about Opare who has 16 caps for his country.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has denied he has one game to save his job.

The Potters are 16th in the Premier League with just one win in eight games as they prepare to host West Brom.

Some media reports have said Hughes, who joined the club in 2013, must win on Saturday or he will be sacked.

“I don’t think that is where we are at. A lot of comments come from people who have not watched our games – they are picking up hearsay and embellishing it,” Hughes said.

“You guys in the media set timelines on it but that is not what is happening in the corridors here in my view,” added the 54-year-old Welshman.

A seventh departure? Or reprieve from local owner?

Stoke have conceded 39 goals this season – a Premier League high – but Hughes said injuries have prevented him picking a consistent back four.

The former Wales manager also claims his side has been “hurt by referee decisions”, pointing to a penalty award which gave West Ham the lead in their 3-1 win at Stoke last week and later saw Manuel Lanzini banned for diving.

Hughes is odds-on favourite to be the next Premier League manager to leave his post and has said anxiety from supporters is “understandable”.

However, he feels his position is strengthened by Stoke-born club owner Peter Coates being heavily involved on a day-to-day basis.

“The owners and everyone connected with the club are fully informed,” Hughes added. “They come to the game themselves. They are here every week. They are not in some far-off land watching on TV.

“They are around the club every single day. They are at the coal face. They would sense if something needs to change. It doesn’t.”

Should Hughes be sacked, he would become the seventh Premier League manager to depart his job before Christmas, equalling the record set in both 2004 and 2007.

Jese Rodriguez scored a superb winner on his Stoke debut to help beat Arsenal 1-0 in the Premier League.

The former Real Madrid forward, who joined the Potters on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain this week, wasted no time settling in at the newly-expanded bet365 Stadium, though his opponents will feel aggrieved.

They will they should have been awarded a penalty in the first half, while Alexandre Lacazette had an effort ruled out for offside among a host of other chances created by the visitors.

Jack Butland was also impressive in the home goal as Stoke claimed their first points of the season.

The Gunners controlled a lot of the game and the likes of Aaron Ramsey – who received his usual booing treatment from the Stoke fans – and Granit Xhaka shone in midfield.

Arsenal had a deliberate ploy to chip the ball over the Stoke defence and it created a few openings.

Lacazette teed up Ramsey in such fashion but Mame Biram Diouf did enough to knock the midfielder off his stride and his shot was a tame one.

Diouf, however, was lucky not to concede a penalty when Arsenal tried this mode of attack again and he appeared to bring down Hector Bellerin. Referee Andre Marriner gave only a corner.

Danny Welbeck also got behind the defence from a clever dinked ball but Butland denied him.

For all the Gunners’ composure in possession, they were vulnerable to the counter-attack.

Stoke were starved of possession but Jese served warning of his threat with a powerful run to set up Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who was making his first start, but Petr Cech saved comfortably.

Choupo-Moting then turned provider but Ryan Shawcross headed his cross over.

Butland again had to be alert to smother a chance from Ramsey after Mesut Ozil floated a free-kick into the area and the Stoke keeper also saved a long-range Xhaka effort.

Stoke made a more positive start to the second half and were instantly rewarded as Jese started and finished the move that broke the deadlock.

The Spaniard carried the ball forward from inside his own half, exchanged passes with Saido Berahino – an early replacement for the injured Xherdan Shaqiri – and beat Cech with a low shot across goal.

Berahino, still looking for his first Stoke goal, might have added to the lead but Cech palmed over his awkward bouncing header.

Welbeck had opportunities at the other end but first mistimed a header and then failed to get a clean shot away under pressure from defenders before Ozil had an attempt blocked.

Arsenal upped the tempo, sending on Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott while Stoke withdrew Jese, and Lacazette rifled in a shot, only to turn and see a flag raised.

Wenger’s men pressed on – annoying Stoke by not putting the ball out after Erik Pieters went down injured – but the hosts stood firm.

Stoke City’s Egyptian winger, Ramadan Sobhi, has signed a new five-year contract with the English Premier League club.

The 20-year-old only joined Stoke last summer from Al Ahly in his homeland but he impressed in his 19 appearances during his maiden season and has been rewarded with an improved long-term deal.

“There’s no doubting that Ramadan is an exciting young talent,” Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes told the club’s official website.

“The first year in a new league and it’s fair to say new culture is always going to be challenging for a player.

“However, Ramadan has adapted to the league and country very quickly and showed that he has enormous potential.

“We’re delighted to have secured him on a contract until at least 2022,” Scholes added.

Sobhi has 16 caps for the Pharaohs and was a key member of the squad that reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon earlier this year.

Saido Berahino served an eight-week suspension before leaving West Brom, Stoke City boss Mark Hughes has said.

His comments follow newspaper reports the striker was banned after failing an out-of-competition drugs test.

Hughes said the 23-year-old, who joined the Potters for £12m in January, was banned for a “Football Association disciplinary matter”.

The Welshman said he saw no reason for Berahino not to face his former club at the Hawthorns on Saturday.

Hughes, 53, said the forward had “issues at his previous club for 18 months”, adding: “We were aware of that before we signed him.

“As with all players, we did our research on him before we signed him, but that didn’t change our thinking at all.

“In terms of more detail, you would probably need to refer back to his former club, West Brom. We are pleased with what he is producing and he is looking forward to the game tomorrow.

“Why wouldn’t I play him?” added Hughes. “He is in line to be involved.”

West Brom boss Tony Pulis confirmed Berahino served a ban, but would not comment on why.

“He didn’t play for me because he wasn’t fit enough,” added Pulis. “This football club looked after Saido very well while he was here. The club looks after all the players.

“Saido was one of the main reasons this club stayed in the Premier League two seasons ago. In his own mind he wanted to move.”

The FA said it does not comment on issues regarding doping violations unless they breach the World Anti-Doping Agency code.
