Former Board Chairman of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Prof. Anthony Sallah, has defended why his board awarded a contract to UniBank Ghana Limited which placed fourth after a  competitive bidding process for the collection of revenue at the hospital.

According to him, all the three banks – Stanbic, GT bank and UMB, were foreign owned, hence his board’s resolve to consider UniBank together with Stanbic which topped the process.

Prof. Sallah put up the spirited defense of UniBank in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday.

[contextly_sidebar id=”MIj683yrpbMHOxZm6j9ijAqgDsks9KD6″]“…UniBank, while it was not working at the hospital had provided GHc2 million to the Obstetrics and Gynecologist departments for refurbishing, as part of their social responsibilities. So we figured that there should be a local content because we said that as Ghanaians we cannot give the whole business to a foreign bank and in addition, Korle Bu is very big. So we decided to split Korle Bu into two, and let the two banks work together,” He explained.

Korle Bu terminates UniBank contract

Prof. Sallah made the remark following Korle Bu’s decision to abrogate the revenue collection contract with UniBank.

The management of Korle Bu had complained about UniBank’s compatibility shortcomings with End-to-End Hospital Revenue Collection Software, which they said essentially led to revenue losses.

The hospital in a press statement, among other things, also said UniBank skipped a meeting to submit proposals for a new software for dealing with the revenue leaks.

It said Stanbic Bank successfully presented a proposal, and was awarded a contract to pilot the new software in the entire hospital, which was valued at $240,000.

But UniBank debunked the claims describing it as “a total fabrication.”

Prof. Sallah slams Korle Bu

Prof. Sallah in the interview also slammed Korle Bu for the claims describing them as “mischievous.”

“…It was very mischievous for the PRO to come up with a statement without mentioning Universal Merchant Bank as number three. Why did he not mention all the four banks?”

When asked his assessment of UniBank’s performance during his tenure, Prof. Sallah said the bank was “excellent.”

The A-Plus factor

The issue came to the limelight following some corruption allegations musician A-Plus, against two presidential staffers, Francis Asenso-Boakye and Abu Jinapor.

A-Plus’ allegations had to do with a petition by UniBank Ghana Limited to the effect that the management of Korle-Bu had abrogated the existing Memorandum of Understanding with them without any reason, thus treating them unfairly.

A-Plus held that the two presidential staffers played a role in the matter, but his allegations were later described as “baseless” an investigations by the Criminal Investigation Department.

Management of the Takoradi Branch of Stanbic Ghana Limited has refuted news making rounds on social media that the bank is endorsing the NPP’s Free SHS policy by wearing government’s primary and Junior High school uniforms.

According to the Takoradi Branch Manager of the bank, Richard Doku Tetteh, in a Citi News interview, it is not the first time the bank is asking its staff to wear school uniforms to promote an educational product the bank is advertising.

Images of the Takoradi branch staff of the bank went viral on social media on Friday when a customer of the bank secretly took photos of the staff wearing uniforms and subsequently posted them on social media without authorization and without asking for the rationale.

The social media post alleged that the staff of the bank were wearing the uniform to support the NPP’s Free Senior High School Policy which was rolled out on September 1, 2017. But Mr. Doku Tetteh refuted the claims and added that the said customer has been identified and reported to top management members in Accra for possible arrest.

“Once a while, we as a bank set aside a day to organize a blitz day which has the objective of creating awareness amongst our customers to enable them understand better [a] bank assurance product and all benefits that come with it, we try to address them…Today happens to be one of days that we are organizing such blitz day”. Mr. Doku explained.

He continued that “on this blitz day, because it is an educational plan which gives assurance to our kids, we try to put on various types of school uniforms. Here in Takoradi we are putting on [government’s] Junior High School uniforms. It is just to arouse the curiosity of our customers because, once they see us wearing the school uniforms, they start asking us why we are wearing them, so we use the opportunity to educate them about this educational policy. The last time we did this was in July this year, which we have images here to show. This has nothing to do with politics. We are just advertising our educational product”.

Mr. Doku Tetteh disclosed that the customer behind the false information was identified later when the Close Circuit Television [CCTV] footage revealed how he secretly took those images.

“We have seen the person who did it and have placed a call to him and have handed over the issue to our security office in Accra and justice will be done to it”.

Meanwhile checks by Citi News indicate that the staff of the bank in Tarkwa also wore some different school uniforms to mark the day.

“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others” – Nelson Rolihlala Mandela.

The history of the African liberation struggle would be incomplete without the personal history and motivations of Nelson Rolihlala Mandela. As Daniel Lieberfeld wrote, the quality of life that Mandela lived enabled him to embody the ideal of inter-group reconciliation, not only in his home country of South Africa, but also on the African continent and the world over, to an extent that is perhaps without historical equivalent. It was therefore not surprising when on July 18, 2009, the United Nation General Assembly instituted the Nelson Mandela International Day to commemorate the lifetime service that Nelson Mandela gave to South Africa, Africa and the world.

Nelson Mandela lived in a period of ruthless oppression in South Africa. The challenges of the times and how he rose to become the model of the anti-apartheid movement places Mandela’s legacy in a progressive perspective with consequences on collective actions against racism, oppression and exploitation in Africa and across the world. Mandela’s influence on the African liberation struggle is that of inspiration and the belief in the human spirit to forge ahead in the face of fierce oppression and the willingness to reconcile with former adversaries. Liberation fighters in Africa and across the world draw encouragement from Nelson Mandela’s rare sense of personal sacrifice in the cause of pursuing the collective good and the wellbeing of all. The very life of Nelson Mandela challenged the unfettered ideals of selfishness, greed, revenge and unhealthy competition that characterized many African countries in the post-independence era.

Beyond representing a symbol of peaceful collective action for change, Nelson Mandela was actively involved in resolving a number of conflicts on the African continent. After voluntarily stepping down as President of South Africa in April 1999, Mandela became the chief mediator of the civil war in Burundi after the death of former Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere.  Mandela pushed hard for the inclusion of rebel groups and advocated ethnic power-sharing arrangements such as a rotating presidency and equal Hutu-Tutsi representation in an integrated army. Nelson Mandela unblocked the talks by instituting decision making by “sufficient consensus” of the largest and most representative parties; imposed a deadline for agreement; involved African governments and the United States and European countries as sponsors and donors; and pushed Thabo Mbeki, his successor as president, to commit South African troops as peacekeepers. The resulting Arusha Accords of 2000 were largely the product of Mandela’s procedural and substantive innovations, his capacity to speak truth to politicians and exert moral pressure on recalcitrant parties.

The legacy of Nelson Mandela indeed transcends the borders of the African continent. His is a legacy for leadership and humanity as a whole. As a strong advocate for liberation, Nelson Mandela did not only concern himself with freedom from the shackles of physical oppression but was also a strong activist for mental liberation through the power of education. Nelson Mandela lived a life filled with the belief that education and life-long learning are the most powerful weapons for changing the world. In his own words, “a good head and heart are always a formidable combination,” in every human struggle.

As the world commemorates Mandela Day, we at Stanbic Bank Ghana take inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s leadership in liberation from social and economic oppression and his love of education as a weapon of change. We celebrate the life and achievement of this great global icon of peace and respect for humanity. Indeed, our eight (8) values – serving our customers, growing our people, delivering to our shareholders, being proactive, working in teams, constantly raising the bar, respecting each other, upholding the highest level of integrity – find expression in the words of this towering figure when he said,

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life lead”.

To this end, Stanbic has been using the celebration of Mandela Day as platform for supporting educational initiatives in Ghana. These include the donation of computers and learning materials, refurbishment of some learning centres and the adoption of some special schools.

To commemorate the day this year, staff of the Bank will spend time mentoring students of the La Yahoushua Primary school in Accra, and donate items to the pupils.

Nelson Mandela may not have lived in the era of Kwame Nkrumah, Patrice Lumumba, Sekou Toure and others when the struggle for African liberation from colonialism was at its peak. However, rising to the challenge of leadership, together with his keen support for education have put Mandela on a pedestal among the pantheon of African and global heroes.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has said the government has begun implementing policies and programmes intended to make Ghana the most business-friendly country in Africa.

These include ensuring fiscal discipline, cutting the budget deficits, managing the national debt and undertaking measures to fight corruption, he said.

Vice President Bawumia said this when a delegation from Stanbic Bank- Ghana, and some senior officials from its parent company, Standard Bank Group from South Africa, paid a courtesy call on him at the Flagstaff House, in Accra.

The delegation, led by Alhassan Andani, the Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic Bank-Ghana, was at the Presidency to discuss issues relating to the economy and affirm their commitment to doing business in Ghana to help drive the country’s development agenda.

Dr Bawumia said the New Patriotic Party won the 2016 General Elections based on the assurance of bringing drastic change to Ghana’s economic fortunes and that the Nana Akufo-Addo’s led Administration was determined to deliver in that regard.

“This is a reformist government. Our message for change was on economic transformation, curbing corruption and that is fundamentally what we are doing.”

“We are keeping a close, laser focus on the economy so that we do not get any surprises, so we can stay ahead of the curve.”

“The fundamental source of what we intend to do is solid fiscal discipline and consolidation. The deficit is expected to be brought down from 9 to 6.5 per cent, and we are cutting down government expenditure,” Dr Bawumia said.

He said the government was working around the clock to ensure stability in the provision of utilities such as electricity and water to reduce cost of production and manufacturing.

Vice President commended Stanbic Bank for its immense contribution made to the country over the years and called on the private sector to partner government to implement programmes designed to make the lives of Ghanaians better.

Mr Helmut Engelbrecht, Executive Head of the Bank in-charge of Corporate Banking, Africa Regions, pledged the commitment of the Standard Bank Group, to support Ghana’s development agenda.

“We are ready to share experiences gained in the 20 African countries where we operate, to help you further modernise the Ghanaian economy,” he said.

The delegation included Kwamina Asomaning, Executive Head, Corporate and Investment Banking, Stanbic Bank-Ghana; Madam Sylvia Inkoom, Executive Head, Corporate Banking, Stanbic Bank-Ghana; and Mawuko Afadzinu.

The rest included David Humphrey, Group Executive Head, Power and Infrastructure – Standard Bank Group, Simon Ashby-Rudd, Group Executive Head, Oil & Gas Sector – Standard Bank Group; and Jaco Burger, Group Executive Head, Corporate Banking, South, West and Central Africa – Standard Bank Group.

The Standard Bank Group is one of South Africa’s largest financial services groups.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has revealed that it is set to finalise the details of a new deal that will see Stephen Keshi continue as the coach of the Super Eagles.

Following an executive committee meeting on Wednesday the national body announced in Abujathat a three-man body set up to negotiate the terms of an improved new deal with Keshi had concluded its work.

The new NFF leadership headed by acting president Mike Umeh has consequently been mandated to finalise details of the reengagement of the coach in the shortest possible time.

There had been doubts that Keshi would be retained after leading the African champions to the Round of 16 at the World Cup. His contract had expired after the global tournament and the NFF – under the leadership of the recently impeached Aminu Maigari – did not offer him a renewal.

The development irked Keshi and led him to resign from the post with reports indicating that he was heading over to South Africa to take over the national team.

However the Bafana job went to South African Eprahim Mashaba, leaving the Super Eagles post as Keshi’s most attractive option.

The former Nigeria skipper has been coach of Nigeria since November 2011. He won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013, becoming only the second man to win the competition as player and coach.

He also became the first African coach to lead a team to the knockout stages of the World Cup – a feat he achieved with Nigeria in Brazil this summer.

The 52-year-old is expected to receive $44,000 in monthly wages going forward, up from the $30,000 he earned in his former contract.

Meanwhile as part of the terms of reconciliation that paved the way for the resolution of the recent NFF crisis that led to the suspension of Nigeria by FIFA, the body’s exco constituted a five-man committee to review the bans on some officials.

The committee, which has three days to do its work, is headed by Effiong Johnson also has Shehu Adamu, Ayodeji Tinubu, Dilichukwu Onyedinma and Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande as members, with Christian Emeruwa will serve as secretary.
