The leadership of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) has given the Principal of St. Vincent College of Education, Yendi, a one-week ultimatum to refund all monies collected from students of the institution who they say have been victimized due to his decisions.

About 70 students of the college were sacked because they did not meet the entry requirements for admission in 2017/2018.

[contextly_sidebar id=”dWKxODq4wBo3SKisbFMnfWCxoW0Ml5us”]The students are said to have gained admission into the college despite scoring D7 grades in English, Mathematics and Science.

But TTAG in a statement is arguing that the Principal, Erasmus Nario Multi, deliberately flouted the National Council for Technical Education (NCTE) regulations by admitting the students even though they were unqualified and “later pushed the blame to innocent students.”

“Per our consultations and interactions with the affected students and after critical scrutiny of both receipts and admission letters of such students, it is very clear that about 98% of the students affected were admitted after the admission requirements have been released by the NCTE,” the statement added.

The association also wants all relevant stakeholders to offer the affected students an avenue to better their WASSCE results, rather than dismissing them.

“We appeal to the MoE [Minsitry of Education], NCTE and all relevant stakeholders to reconsider their decision on the affected students and give them the opportunity to better their WASSCE results this year since the principal violated the regulations of the admissions process.”

They argued further that the students “spent one semester in college and took part in the End of First Semester Examination conducted by the University of Cape Coast, Institute of Education.”

citifmonline.com understands that over 70 students of the St Vincent College of Education at Yendi in the Northern Region have been asked to go home for using grade D7 in English, Mathematics and Science to gain admission into the college.

According to the school, the decision was taken following a directive from the Executive Secretary for the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE). This was the explanation cited in a letter given to one of the affected students.

The letter signed by the Principal of the College, Erasmus Nario Multi, said the decision was taken during a meeting with principals of public colleges of education, “called at the instance of the Minister for Education [Matthew Opoku Prempeh].”

[contextly_sidebar id=”jXbU2XZxog6E7I3yITeN5UKqgZSzr7Sm”]The letter said “it was resolved that all unqualified students must be withdrawn from the colleges forthwith.”

“…We have been formally instructed to withdraw all unqualified students who do not meet the current minimum entry requirements into public colleges of education. It is in line with this directive that we the management of St Vincent College of Education, Yendi, are writing to formally inform you that your ward/student….whose submitted grades do not meet the current criterion of entry into a public college of education is withdrawn from the college forthwith,” the letter addressed to one of the affected students stated.

Per entry requirements of tertiary institutions in Ghana, applicants with West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results are supposed to among other things have good grades ranging from A1 to C6 in core (English, Mathematics and Science) and elective subjects.

According St Vincent College of Education, although they admitted students who had D7, the students were informed of the consequences they could face if they do not better their grades.

“It should be noted that on admission, your ward was formally informed by the Assistant college secretary Mr. Solomon Zakaria through direct telephone calls and orally upon arrival on campus, that if they are unable to redeem the unqualified grades on time (prior to the formal verification of admitted students), they will be withdrawn from the college,” the letter added.

The school further assured the affected students that “all items or services for which your ward might have paid, and yet have not been provided or supplied, would be refunded once the College reopens for the 2nd semester of the 2017-2018 academic year.”

Aggrieved trainee teachers of St. Vincent College of Education in the Yendi Municipality of the Northern Region, today [Thursday], boycotted lectures in protest of their exclusion from beneficiaries of the restored allowances for teacher and nurse trainees.

They have thus chased the Principal out of the school compound resulting in the police being dispatched to the premises of the institution to calm the situation.

The trainees have since rejected meals prepared for them at the school’s canteen.

They accused the College Principal of negligence and incompetence, and demanded his removal from office.

Some of the trainees, in a Citi News interview, demanded their inclusion as beneficiaries of the trainee allowances.

According to them, the Principal had earlier assured them that they would be paid the allowances, but later changed his stance when the student leadership pressurized him to address their grievances.

Meanwhile, the Yendi Divisional Police Command has deployed personnel to the College to avert any untoward situation there.

The NPP Government, in fulfillment of the campaign promises it made ahead of the 2016 elections, restored teacher and nursing trainee allowances.

Continuing students of public teacher trainee colleges have since been receiving the monthly stipends.

But students of the St. Vincent College of Education in Yendi, say they have been neglected, hence their protest.
