The accosted driver, Hamza File, who has since September 28, 2017, been granted police inquiry bail, is assisting the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), and the police administration to establish the source of the products.

The smuggling of fuel products across Ghana and beyond, is gaining notoriety in the oil marketing space.

This situation has compelled the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), to intensify its surveillance to clump down on the activities of the smugglers.

The regional capital, Cape Coast, is largely a fishing community with an estimated population of 170,00 people.

Cape Coast is historically known as the citadel of Ghanaian education and has most of the best senior high schools. The quality of education at the senior high level is in sharp contrast with that at the basic level due to many challenges faces the latter.

Poverty, which is the main reason contributing to the current state of education in the area, causes mass absenteeism, school dropouts and indiscipline.

Wonder Ami Hagan tells the heart-breaking story of Cape Coast in this documentary with the hope of getting immediate action taken on the issues.

The acting Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Aheto Tsegah has downplayed assertions that the preference for most of Ghana’s public schools have dwindled.

He said the notion that parents are sending their wards to the private schools because of a vote of no confidence in the public ones does not hold.

A lot of private schools both at the secondary and tertiary levels are springing up and they are challenging the quality and excellence of public institutions.

A large number of Ghanaian parents are sending their children to these private institutions due to the increasing perception that these private schools deliver quality education as compared to the public ones.

But speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Mr. Tsegah dismissed these assertions saying, “the fact that parents are opting for the private schools doesn’t mean the public school systems are bad.”

He insisted that public schools are still delivering quality education, since “quality is not about the number of programmes that you[private schools] run but the quality and content of the programmes”

Commenting on the fallen standards of education in the Central Region and the lack of desire by children in the region for education, the Director General of the GES confirmed “a lot of children along that line, just go to school and look out through the window and when the boat comes they jump out .”

He attributed the poor school attendance by pupils in the region to a lack of supervision, adding that the problem is prevalent in the region because “most of the teachers are not controlled.”

Operatives of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) reportedly prevented students of the Annor Adjaye Senior High School in the Jomoro District of the Western Region from demonstrating.

The demonstration was to express their displeasure against alleged mismanagement of fees collected by authorities of the school.

The students who wore red arms bands roamed the streets of Bonwire and other communities to express their anger at the school authorities.

However, the demonstration was quelled immediately after it started as BNI operatives stormed the school to restrain the students.

The students have been warned against granting media interviews and the schools authorities are also tightlipped on the matter.

The Assembly Member for Bonwire, Joseph Nyamekeh witnessed the action and told Citi News, the students are the demanding the supply of some school items which they had earlier paid for to the former headmaster of the school.

According to him, the new headmaster insists he has no knowledge of such a transaction between the former headmaster and the students, hence, the decision by the students to demonstrate.

Government has rescinded its decision to pass on the full cost of utilities to public universities and other tertiary institutions.

This was revealed by the Minister of Education, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang when the Ministry took its turn at the “Meet the Press” series in Accra.

The decision was repealed after the Minister made a special submission to cabinet on why education institutions should be exempted.

Cabinet after consideration “has provided the exemption,” she said.

Government has earlier announced a decision to wean all government agencies off its budgetary allocation on utility subsidies.

School Representative Councils (SRCs) of the various public universities expressed their dissatisfaction at this decision and also threatened to demonstrate if the government did not rescind its decision by Thursday June 5, 2014.

According to the Education Minister, a meeting involving stakeholders was underway to find alternative means of paying the utility bills of the Public Universities.

“There is a meeting taking place between the ministry of finance and the relevant agencies to dialogue on innovative ways of meeting our bills” she said.

Meanwhile, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has welcomed the government’s decision.

In an interview with Citi News, the President of NUGS, Samuel Darkwa Bimfoh said: “It is a welcoming development that the government through the ministry of education has finally come out to say that they are going to take care of the utility bills”.

President John Mahama has called for greater collaboration between industry and academia to enable graduates fit into the job market.

The President was speaking at the opening ceremony of a two-day national conference on bridging gap between education, training and industry.

This is to strengthen links between education and industry in the country.

Addressing the conference, President Mahama said his administration is ready to provide all necessary interventions to achieve this objective.

He noted that “there is a great deal at stake and we must redouble our efforts to ensure that we are producing graduates in the areas that the world of work is demanding them.”

The President urged industry and businesses to let government and the various educational institutions “to let us know the skills set they require and which areas of training they require.”

This, he said will allow educational institutions “to align their curricular to suit this demand.”

He admonished participants at the conference to address issues on employability by offering sustainable solutions.”

He implored them to make suggestions to improve internships and apprenticeship for skills training,  practical attachments and incentives which could encourage industry to recruit and train graduates.

Youth unemployment which is high in Ghana is considered a hindrance to the country’s development.

Thousands of graduates of tertiary institutions  are unable to find jobs after undertaking their national service.

In 2012, a group of unemployed graduates came together and formed the Unemployed Graduates association to demand jobs from the government.

Some industry players and organizations say though there may not be jobs for the high numbers of graduates who leave school every year, many are unable to meet the requirements for the few existing jobs.

Many blame the education system and the irrelevant courses being studied in schools.

This, according to them contributes to the production of students who do not fit the existing job market.

Authorities at the University of Ghana have denied reports that some students of the University may not graduate this year following the introduction of a new grading system.

Under the new system, a student can only be graded “A” if he obtains an 80% score in an examination whilst under the old system a 70% score was equivalent to Grade ‘A’.

According to the students, the University’s attempt to migrate them onto the new grading system will mean, either students will have to  re-write their papers or not graduate.

Final year students at the English, Economics, Political Science and Psychology departments are the most affected.

But speaking to Citi News, the Director of Academic Affairs at the University, Enoch Amartey said authorities are working with the student body to rectify the situation.

According to him, the University has also come up with a new grading system which is still under discussion.

“We have come up with this grading system which is still being discussed. The Vice Chancellor met the student leaders to discuss the matter and we are trying to find solutions to whatever grading system we will come up with,” he said

In that regard, he stated that the school authorities will come up with its final decision after discussions have been concluded.

A total of nine schools in the Agona West Municipality of the Central Region scored zero percent in the 2013 Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).

Mr Samuel Oppong, Agona West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) made this known when he addressed the first ordinary meeting of the  Assembly at Agona Swedru.

According to the MCE,  available statistics indicate that out of 2,182 candidates who sat for the examinations, only 848 candidates passed, representing 38.8 percent.

He attributed the poor results to teacher-absenteeism, and said this constituted  a major drawback on education delivery in the Municipality, and said the Municipal Educational Oversight Committee had put in place measures to reverse the situation.

Mr Oppong who is also the chairman of the Educational Oversight Committee, said the measures include teacher promotion, Best Teacher Award, institution of welfare services and sanctions on recalcitrant teachers.

He charged the Agona West Municipal Directorate of Education to work hard to promote education at the Junior High Schools (JHS).

The MCE said government was sinking millions of Ghana Cedis into education, and asked the teachers to work hard to reciprocate the gesture.

Mr Oppong said the Assembly in collaboration with the Agona West Municipal Health Directorate,  had put in place plans to educate the public against the spread of  communicable diseases.

On revenue, the MCE said the Assembly has put in place measures to improve revenue mobilization to improve the financial position of the Assembly.

The Opoku Ware Senior High School in Kumasi has introduced a smart board technology to enhance an interactive way of teaching.

The technology, which is a computerised system, operates on a whiteboard, with an inbuilt mechanism that has an electronic pen which allows items written on the board to be converted into word document.

The board facilitates the use of text and pictures for the teaching of Science, Business and General Arts.

It also allows the user to hook on to viber, skype, tango and other types of social media networks for teaching and learning by both the teacher and student.

In addition to this, the technology, which is used widely in the United States and Canada, can automatically set questions on every topic treated by a teacher and, aside the use of the English language, also has the capacity to convert  English language to French.

Mode of operation

The technology allows the teacher to upload his/her lesson notes unto the system, as well as pictures and other images that are needed to assist teaching and learning. The machine, which is connected to the Internet, gives the operators the opportunity to access more information, and this makes it easier for the students to learn on their own even if the teacher is not present in class.

It is also connected to the students’ computers, which makes it possible for students to access the teacher’s notes and pictures during the lesson.

Opoku Ware School currently has three of their classrooms equipped with the technology.

The success story

The success story of the school in the use of the technology has led to some schools such as Prempeh College, St Louis, and Yaa Asantewaa Senior High schools replicating it in their respective schools.

The Headmaster of the school, Mr F. M. Oppong-Mensah, introduced the technology to the school after an education and cultural tour in Canada and US where he observed that it was being used by some schools in those countries.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic about the technology, the Assistant Headmaster of the school in charge of Academic Affairs, Mr Benjamin Kweku Baah, said all teachers in the school had been trained in the proper usage of the technology.

The smart board technology instructor at the Opoku Ware School, Mr Kofi Amoako Darko, in an interview, commended the headmaster for introducing the technology to the school, saying it had made teaching and learning much easier.

He commended the Parent Teacher Association of the School (PTA) for procuring three of the boards for the school and called on other philanthropists to buy more boards for the school.
