A Ghanaian-American fibre optics inventor, Dr Thomas Mensah on Monday launched the Silicon Valley of Ghana at the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT (GI-KACE) in Accra as part of efforts to bridge the technology gap in the country.

The Silicon Valley of Ghana is under the Ministry of Communications and the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Mensah said the Silicon Valley of Ghana will create business accelerators and incubators that can compete with tech-companies around the world, move Ghana into the 21st Century technological advancement and also support the high Speed Bullet Train that is being developed in Ghana.

[contextly_sidebar id=”6Jl3Pl7rvkGBfl3WcsL0YLX4dQ8e7b5z”]The occasion was also used to announce the members of the board of advisors to the Silicon Valley of Ghana.

Dr Mensah, the founder and chairman of the Silicon Valley of Ghana said the board members include Dr. Victor Lawrence (Stevens University); Dr. Michael Ansah (VP Dell UK); Dr. Isaiah Blankson (Hypersonic Expert, NASA); Prof. Obiri Danso (Vice Chancellor KNUST); Prof. Gabriel Ayum Teye (Vice Chancellor UDS); Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, (Vice Chancellor UCC); Dr. Frimpong Boateng (Minister Science and Innovation), and Mr. Alan Kyeremanteng (Minister Trade and Industry).

Others are Mrs Cecilia Dapaah (Minister for Aviation); Mr. Osafo Marfo (Senior Minister); Mrs. Ursula Owusu Ekuful (Minister for Communications); Fernando Hernandez (Microsoft); Robert Bobby Satcher (Astronaut), and Mr. Kwasi Adu-Gyan, Director General of GI-KACE.

Dr Mensah said membership of the board included Ghanaian expatriates in the diaspora who are desirous in the technological advancement of the development of Ghana.

He said the GI-KACE was chosen as the venue for the launch because ‘it is packed with the brainpower to support the Silicon Valley of Ghana in bridging the technology gap of the country’ he said.

The renowned inventor indicated that GI-KACE will be the pivot around which the Silicon Valley of Ghana will revolve, and serves as the link for both the universities and research institutions in Ghana with industrial corporations, advanced research centres’ and other “Tech giants”.

The innovation and competency centres which will link up with the GI-KACE, according to Dr Mensah, included the University of Ghana, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Development Studies and the University of Cape Coast.

Dr Mensah said the innovation and competency centres’ will work with industries and academia to create ICT products and services in Ghana.

The venture, he said, would also include the development of telemedicine platform for Ghana whereby physicians from Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, and Cape Coast University hospital will use broadband technology to connect with doctors in Universities in the USA such as John Hopkins and Universities in England and Germany to look at complex medical diagnostics.

He pledged his readiness to working hand-in-hand with GI-KACE to manufacture products and services essential in driving internet of things such as drones, smart phones, as well as telemedicine and transportation.

According to him, the Silicon Valley of Ghana will create business accelerators and incubators that can compete with tech-companies around the world, move Ghana into the 21st Century technological advancement and also support the high Speed Bullet Train that is being developed in Ghana.

Dr Mensah, who created the Silicon Valley of the South in the USA, said he will use the same methodology with the GI-KACE as the hub to link all the Universities and other higher technological institutions to develop advanced things just like they do in America.

Google’s new flagship smartphones have been hit by complaints about the quality of the screen.

Tech reviewers, who have had the device for about two weeks, noticed “burn in” on the display, while others noted “muddy” discolouration on the screen.

Google said it was investigating the issue, which it took “very seriously”.

Google’s new line, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, are its attempt to break into the smartphone market dominated by Apple and Samsung.

Last year’s Pixel was well-received by reviewers, but sold poorly. It accounted for just 0.5% of the global market.

The Pixel 2 was made by HTC, while the Pixel 2 XL was made by LG.

A Pixel 2 XL review unit provided to the BBC by Google suffered from mild burn-in – the term given to when a screen is permanently marked by images that have been on screen for an extended period of time.

Burn-in is typical of old screens, but should not happen on a new high-end smartphone.

On the Google device, the navigation bar that is often at the bottom of the screen could be seen faintly when it should not have been visible.

“We take all reports of issues very seriously, and our engineers investigate quickly,” said Mario Queiroz, Google’s vice president for the Pixel range.

“We will provide updates as soon as we have conclusive data.”

The worst case scenario for Google would be a halt to production of the Pixel – which has already seen shipping delays of up to a month – and potentially a recall for devices already shipped.

“Not a great start for sure,” said Carolina Milanesi, a Silicon Valley-based analyst for Creative Strategies.

“This was Google’s big step into really going for the devices market, broadening the breath of the products. It raises the question of whether they can actually take on this much.”

The news follows complaints over a separate Google product, the Google Home Mini voice assistant.

It was discovered to have been listening in to conversations without users’ knowledge because of a faulty button. Google has since disabled the feature.

The founder of Silicon Valley-based venture capitalist firm 500 Startups has resigned following sexual harassment claims by several women.

Dave McClure announced his resignation in a blog entitled: “I’m a creep. I’m sorry.”

Entrepreneur Sarah Kunst had claimed in the New York Times that Mr McClure sent inappropriate messages after discussing a potential job offer with her.

Mr McClure apologised directly to her for his behaviour in his post.

He also admitted that he had behaved inappropriately towards other women.

“I made advances towards multiple women in work-related situations, where it was clearly inappropriate,” wrote Mr McClure.

“I put people in compromising and inappropriate situations, and I selfishly took advantage of those situations where I should have known better. My behaviour was inexcusable and wrong.”

After the article, tech entrepreneur Cheryl Yeoh also published claims of an assault in her apartment and claimed there were “dozens” of women who had been sexually harassed by him.

She said she had invited Mr McClure and some other investors back to her home to brainstorm new ideas in 2014. He was the last to leave.

“He pushed himself on to me to the point where I was backed into a corner, made contact to kiss me, and said something along the lines of, ‘Just one night, please just this one time,'” she wrote.

Ms Yeoh said she had already told Mr McClure that she had a boyfriend, and that he knew him.

“The fact that I had to say no multiple times, and that he had pushed himself on to me and kissed me without my consent was way more than crossing the line of inappropriateness,” she wrote.

In his blog Mr McClure apologised directly to Sarah Kunst and “the women I have hurt or offended” but did not mention Ms Yeoh by name.

He has not commented on her claims.

500 Startup co-founder Christine Tsai has now taken on the role of chief executive.

“As much as we want to be part of the solution, we clearly have also been part of the problem,” she wrote.

“Undoubtedly there are ways I could have done more or acted sooner.”

Dave McClure is undergoing counselling “to work on changing his perspectives”, she added.

Silicon Valley sexism

Silicon Valley has been rocked by sexism scandals in recent months.

Several senior executives at Uber, including founder Travis Kalanick, resigned after a damning report into the organisational culture within the firm which included sexual discrimination.

Last month, Binary Capital co-founders Justin Caldbeck and Jonathan Teo both resigned from the tech investment firm following accusations of harassment carried out by Mr Caldbeck.

In a statement to The Information (which has a paywall) Mr Caldbeck said he was “deeply disturbed” by the allegations.

“There’s no denying this is an issue in the venture community, and I hate that my behaviour has contributed to it,” he said.

At last week’s Female Founders conference, attendees said they were pleased to see action was being taken.

“People are being held accountable – they’re not sweeping it under the carpet,” Jessica Livingston, co-creator of start-up investment programme Y Combinator, told the BBC.

There were just five minutes remaining of an electrifying encounter between Ghana and Germany. The two sides had left no inch of turf uncovered at Estadio Castelao and the score was locked at 2-2. Yet despite the heat and humidity in Fortaleza – strength-sapping conditions for any player – there was one man who continued to charge around the pitch, dashing back to win the ball before roaring upfield again to send in a dangerous cross.

That man was Ghana No23 Harrison Afful, who had been patrolling the Black Stars’ right flank all match long yet still seemed to have more pace and energy than any of the other 21 players on the field. A relatively unknown name on the global scene, performances like this at the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ mean Afful is unlikely to remain in the shadows for much longer.

How, you might ask, can such a phenomenal athlete have stayed below the radar for so long, particularly at nearly 28 years of age? The answer is simple: Afful has never played in European football. He has not lacked offers, but the all-action wing-back has instead preferred to continue with Tunisian giants Espérance Sportive de Tunis, where he has spent the past four years.

“I’ve had offers, but I didn’t feel they were right for me,” said a smiling and refreshingly humble Afful, speaking to FIFA.com after the Germany game. “I’m happy in Tunis and they’ve always treated me very well, I wouldn’t want to leave just for the sake of trying something new. That said, if an interesting opportunity does come my way, of course I’d consider it,” he added with a glint in his eye.

Hope still intact
Of course, the versatile defender has more strings to his bow than merely speed and stamina. Citing a never-say-die attitude as a further strength, Afful’s technical quality is remarkable too, as demonstrated when he sent in the pinpoint cross that enabled Andre Ayew to head Ghana level at 1-1.

“It [fighting spirit] is part of me. If I wasn’t like that, I wouldn’t be myself,” said the diminutive dynamo. “Ever since I was very young I’ve been quick and I’ve always liked having the ball, so when I’m near it I have to go looking for it. What’s more, I really love my country and my team-mates, so I’ll never stop giving everything I’ve got to help them.”

How does Afful see Ghana’s chances of progressing from Group G, now that their destiny is not solely in their hands? “It’s a shame we couldn’t win today. It would have been great to take all three points. But we ran ourselves into the ground and played really well against a team of the calibre of Germany,” he said, before signing off with a vow to all Black Stars’ followers. “We’ve still got a game to go and we’re going to give it our all to go through. If we don’t qualify, it won’t be for lack of effort.”
