Citi Business News is learning that importers and exporters are likely to pay more on tariffs at the ports effective January 2018.

This follows the revision of the various port tariffs by the Ghana Port and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

Indications are that the charges will go up between 5 and 20% when the new tariffs are introduced.

According to officials, the change has become necessary as it has been almost four years since the GPHA last reviewed its tariffs.

In line with this, the GPHA is set to engage the Ship Owners and Agents Association as well as the Ghana Shippers Authority.

Following which it will meet the importers and exporters, freight forwarders as well as GUTA for final inputs and subsequent implementation.

West Blue Consulting has received the Technology/Innovations Award at the maiden Ghana Maritime and Shipping Awards held over the weekend at the La Beach Hotel in Accra.

The world class IT-consulting & technology firm was awarded for providing technical support in trade facilitation in Ghana.

This award adds to the many awards that West Blue Consulting has received both locally and international since it started operations in Ghana.

The IT-consulting firm which is the only company providing Single Window in Ghana was recently awarded by the World Customs Organization (WCO) through the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority for rendering exceptional service to the international community.

The maiden edition of the Ghana Maritime & Shipping Awards was organized by Ninetyeightz Events, which is the brain behind the widely acclaimed National Aviation Awards held last year.

The awards identifies, and publicly recognize outstanding performers as well as contributors to the country’s maritime industry, at the institutional, enterprise and individual levels.

Valentina Minta, Chief Executive of West Blue Consulting expressed appreciation to the organizers for recognizing their work with the award, stating “We are proud to be a recipient of the award in Ghana.”

Single Window Achievement

West Blue Consulting, in partnership with the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, launched the Ghana National Single Window (GNSW) project.

Under the project, import clearance transactions at the Tema Port and the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) have reduced from two weeks to two hours to increase government’s revenue at the ports.

Ghana’s ranking has increased in the World Bank Trading Across Border Reports from 167 in 2015 to 154 in 2017; and in the Sub-Saharan Africa Sub-region, Ghana ranked first in West Africa and Top 10 in Sub Saharan Africa, coming in at the 9th position out of the 47 countries ranked in the region.

The country also made tremendous improvements in the Global Logistics Performance Index (LPI) ranking, rising 12 places from 100th in 2014 to 88th in 2016 out of 160 countries.

The maiden edition of the Ghana Maritime & Shipping Awards has been scheduled for March 2017 at the La Beach Hotel in Accra.

The awards, the first of its kind, will identify and recognize outstanding performers in and contributors to the country’s maritime industry, at the institutional, enterprise and individual levels.

The Chief Executive Officer and Events Director at Ninetyeightz Events, Bergis Kojo Frimpong explained that the awards “seek to create a much needed platform for all stakeholders in the maritime industry to network and share ideas as to how they can improve as individual entities and also an industry.”

“The awards will recognize institutions, companies and individuals who have excelled in both the shipping and wider maritime industries, awarding deserving organizations that are achieving world-class service within the industry,” he added.

A special Awards Panel will be assembled to certify all awards winners for all categories after a selection process with invitation for nominations.

Nominations will opened online and in the dailies after which a validation by event partners will be done to ensure that all nominees have provided accurate information.

A Technical Committee, appointed by the organizers, comprising people thoroughly knowledgeable in the activities in the Shipping and Maritime industry, will then prepare and present their assessment of the candidacies of the various nominees to an Awarding Board made up of experienced players in the industry.

The independent body will use a pre-determined criteria to authenticate the Technical Committee’s report to determine the final award winners.

Altogether, there will be about 30 award categories that capture areas such as Environmental Protection, Corporate Social Responsibility, Marine Crewing & Manning, Maritime Logistics, Marine Research, as well as Safety & Security.

Awards will also be conferred for outstanding performance in Sustainable Development, Maritime Education and Training, Customer Service, Ship Finance, and Technology/Innovations.

Other categories include, Port & Terminal of the Year, Ship Owner/Operator of the Year, Marine Industry Supplier of the Year, Shipping Company of the Year, Terminal Operator of the Year, Marine Broker of the Year, Ship Manager of the Year, Shipyard/Ship Repair Facility of the Year, Ship Agency of the Tear, Freight Forwarder of the Year, Classification Society of the Year, Marine Tourism & Leisure Operator of the Year, Marine Bank of the Year, Marine Insurer of the Year and Maritime Law Firm of the Year.

There will be honourary awards given to selected pioneers and operators in the industry.

These will include awardees for Maritime Lifetime Achievement, Maritime Hall of Fame, Maritime Key Man and Woman in Shipping, Maritime Excellence Award, Maritime Legion of Honour, Maritime Personality of the Year and Maritime Editor’s Choice, which will conferred in appreciation of the value of the media to the industry.
