Heads of some Basic Schools in the Breman and Breman-West communities in the Kumasi Metropolis, have appealed to the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), for the urgent construction of speed ramps and pedestrian crossing on that stretch of the Kumasi-Offinso highway.

This is to help address the worrying frequent vehicular accidents where  pedestrians and school children crossing the road are knocked down.

A Press Statement signed by the respective School Heads could not immediately provide figures but expressed grave concern over resultant fatalities including deaths caused by speeding vehicles plying that portion of the road, especially from the Breman Sawmill and the Ahenfo Lodge Entertainment Centre.

“School attendance has gone down whilst drop-out rate is on the increase since school children fear to cross the road to school unaided, the schooling period of other victims have also been interrupted due to long periods of hospitalization and recuperation at home,” it said.

The School Heads complained about countless previous fruitless efforts to relevant authorities to address the challenge and called on Honourable Osei-Kyei Bonsu, Member of Parliament for the area to assist to expedite prompt action, to save the worrying situation.

The Statement was signed by School Heads of Frank Duff Preparatory, Breman Roman Catholic Schools, D’MITRY Adventist Junior Secondary School, JITA international and Shining Star Academy among others.

Ahotor, a farming community in the Atebubu-Amanten District of the Brong Ahafo Region was on Tuesday [March 21, 2017] thrown into a state of shock and mourning, following the death of two pupils in a dug-out pond in the area.

The deceased were Kindergarten (KG) pupils from the Ahotor DA Primary School.

They were only identified as Michael and Solomon aged 7 and 4 respectively.

The two reportedly got drowned in the pond created by a relative to provide constant water for the construction of his mud house.

According to the Headmaster of the school, Jalulah Peter Naabi who confirmed the incident to Citi News, the two boys were from his school and did not report for school that day.

He said the kids were left in the care of their grandmother who decided to visit the construction site with them whilst their father left to get gravel at a different location for the project.

He continued that the kids took advantage of the lack of vigilance on the part of their grandmother and decided to swim in the pond which had gathered water following Sunday’s rainfall.

He said they were there swimming unnoticed when the unfortunate incident occurred, leaving the two dead.

A third child who refused to swim, stood and watched his senior brothers, and after sensing danger, run home to report the occurrence when he could not see them floating in the pond.

They however, died before help could come. The bodies of the pupils have since been buried and police have also commenced investigations into the matter.
