The Lebanese community in Ghana has awarded scholarships to 19 wards of martyrs of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The programme, in its third year, is one of the initiatives that the Lebanese community is running to help promote education in Ghana.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Lebanese ambassador to Ghana, Ali H. Halabi, acknowledged the contribution of Ghanaian soldiers in peacekeeping efforts across the world.

“…for the Lebanese community, the contributions of Ghana’s Armed Forces to domestic and world security is an emotional affair. We fondly recall the efforts of Ghana’s peacekeeping mission to Lebanon and the sacrifices made there. They are the symbols of the decades of strong and enduring bonds between the peoples of Ghana and Lebanon. Today, we acknowledge that, it is the selfless contributions of these men and women of the Armed Forces that have established a solid security architecture under which different people in this great nation could live together peacefully…,” he stated.

“…By this action, we hope to contribute to the future of these children who are spread across all the levels of Ghana’s education system.”

This is the third year that the Lebanese community in Ghana has awarded scholarships to the dependents of matyrs.

Since the 2012/2013 academic year, the Lebanese community has been giving scholarships to these wards, along with some brilliant undergraduate students from the Ghana Institute of Journalism, law students from the University of Ghana and the Kwame University of Science and Technology, as well as some students of the Ghana School of Law (Makola) and Masters students of the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

The Lebanese community in Ghana has awarded scholarships to eight entrants of the Ghana School of Law.

This is a part of a scholarship programme that is being run by the community to promote Ghana’s development agenda through investments in the nation’s human resource base.

At a ceremony to present the scholarships, the Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Ali Halabi, stressed the vital role of the Ghana School of Law in ensuring the realization of the rule of law, stating that, “the provision of quality legal education and the attainment of this favourable rule of law in society, are not mutually exclusive. It is therefore important to train visionary lawyers who would be key actors in achieving this societal growth.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”Sim7pJBCEEQBuBh8USutyzhcldSghsC7″]A representative of the beneficiaries, Afia Poku, thanked the Lebanese community for their benevolence, noting that, through this award, they have “showcased their adherence to upholding the rule of law in Ghana as they have recognized that, the law is the fiber that holds our society together and heals societal rifts.”

Professor Kofi Quashigah, Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Ghana, commended the Lebanese community in Ghana for investing in Ghana’s rule of law through the scheme.

He reflected on the Lebanese community’s assistance to the faculty for the past five years, which included a scholarship to undergraduate students pursuing LLB.

The Scholarship

For five years, the Lebanese community in Ghana has had in place a scholarship scheme for undergraduate law students from the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and Communications students from the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

Postgraduate students from the Ghana Institute of Journalism and the Ghana School of Law have also benefited from this scheme.

“What we are witnessing at this moment is a reflection of the community’s continuous commitment to the production of a strong human resource base of this nation through education,” he said.

“The Lebanese community in Ghana recognizes the role of a strong educated human resource base, as a driver of national development.”

“Instead of depending on government for everything that we need, we must develop a sustainable system that can free us of our financial burdens. The fact that the Lebanese community has seen this shows that they are throwing the challenge to us as a nation, and we ought to accept it.”

“We would continue to do our best and strive to achieve academic excellence. We know that the Ambassador’s objective is to see us at the top and by the grace of God, we will get there,” one of the beneficiaries, Kenneth Appiah, said in his acceptance speech.

Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah expressed his gratitude to the District Assembly for its support in developing the constituency.

He noted that the collaboration between the local assembly and his office has also culminated in the provision of a mechanized borehole system with four tanks and a solar panel for residents of Akyem Akokoaso in the Ofoase-Ayirebi constituency.

“We are also in the process of facilitating the provision of over 3,000 electricity meters for many residents who were not captured in the first phase. 27 other communities will also receive electricity in the Electricity Extension Programme that will soon commence in the district,” the MP promised.

“A district of 140,000 has no doctor. This is heart-wrenching. We are appealing to the government through the Ministry of Local Government to help us,” the DCE stressed.

A parent said “I have been thinking of how to pay my son’s admission fees. I thank the MP for this gesture. It is very timely”.

Alhaji Boniface Abubakar Sadique, the Minister for Inner-cities and Zongo Development, says Muslim students would benefit from scholarship packages under the Zongo Development Fund.

He said the scholarship would be provided to brilliant but needy students at all levels of education.

[contextly_sidebar id=”7QL9fKJWr3BE4p8MP47jKaM7eU0hQwcx”]Alhaji Sadique made the statement when he interacted with some members of the Zongo communities at a meeting in Sunyani.

He explained that the Fund would be used to establish Islamic Senior High Schools, hospitals and also provide business support to Muslim entrepreneurs.

Alhaji Sadique said sanitation ought to be improved in Zongo communities to control the outbreak of diseases.

In an open forum, some Muslim parents expressed concern about the poor standard of education among Muslim youth in the area.

They observed that school dropout rates were high and attributed it partly to poor educational infrastructure.

Hajia Fati Abass, one of the parents also expressed concern about drug abuse among the youth in the communities, and appealed to security agencies to help bring the situation under control.

$50 million dollars was allocated to the Zongo Development Fund, which was a line item in the 2017 budget.

The sector minister had previously spoken about how education was part of the priority areas of the fund; including the stocking of libraries, helping to rehabilitate schools in the zongos and empowering Arabic instructors.

[contextly_sidebar id=”RlsQyDs7VG7nIwCtY0shUoziA5ppByEk”]Sheikh Mustapha Ibrahim, the Chairman of SONSETFUND and the Islamic Council for Development and Humanitarian Services (ICODEHS), speaking at the event in Accra, said that education should not be a privilege for a few that can afford in society.

“Rather it should be a right for every child of school going age from primary to tertiary level hence the need for SONSETFUND.”

He said the Foundation was supporting the students with an amount of GH¢35,000.00 to be shared among the beneficiaries.

Sheikh Ibrahim said those students who had gone through their secondary education and had gained admission to tertiary institutions but without financial support would be major beneficiaries.

He said this would bring down the numbers of school drop-outs in the Muslim communities, adding that, the establishment of Junior High Schools and Senior High Schools by the Chief Imam would enable Muslims to acquire secular education better.

The Chairman expressed his appreciation to all institutions and their strategic partners who supported them to ensure these students make a mark in their lives and society at large.

The Sudanese Ambassador, Babikir Elsiddig M. Elamin, expressed enthusiasm for the effort of the Chief Imam to ensure that Ghana has a literate Muslim community.

He said Muslims in Sudan are engaged in such initiatives, and therefore pledged his support to such projects.

The Chief Imam also advised the beneficiaries to take their studies seriously because they have been selected among the many applicants, saying “this shows you are blessed, so work hard and you would achieve your aim.”

The supporting institutions in their solidarity messages entreated the beneficiaries to make good use of the money they had received to sustain the foundation.
