The Police administration is set to reward a brave Lance Corporal who shot and killed two robbers in a fierce gun battle after they robbed a cocoa purchasing clerk of almost GHc580,000.

The robbers attacked the Onuapa cocoa purchasing clerk after he had withdrawn the money from a bank, and was about to distribute it to his colleague clerks when the robbers pounced on them at Asankare in the Ashanti Region.

The Konongo Divisional Police Commander, Superintendent Ohene Boadi Bossman, explained to Citi News that, “last Thursday around 5:45pm, two men on motorbikes went to Asankare where the Onuapa cocoa purchasing clerk works.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”vZQyfOlinx7jjuOW0zq7AqDnzxL7iKYA”]”Unfortunately on that day, the cocoa purchasing clerk had gone to Konongo to withdraw a very huge amount of money, that was 580,000 cedis ostensibly to distribute it to the cocoa purchasing clerks. In the process, two guys on motorbikes who had covered their faces with the helmet of the bikes stormed the place and ordered the Purchasing Clerk to hand over the money to them. Fortunately, the tyre of the motorbike got deflated along the way and they stopped a taxi cab, and dropped all the passengers at gunpoint except the driver, put the money in and sped off.”

He further added that, when the Lance Corporal was informed about the robbery, he quickly picked up a weapon and stopped a Land Cruiser vehicle belonging to the Juaso MP, sped off and chased the guys.

“The driver[taxi] noticing that the people were difficult elements decided to run into a ditch so he can free himself. Unfortunately, when the driver managed to escape, they [robbers] shot at him, instantly killing him. The robbers stopped another taxi, dropped all the passengers from the car and took charge. When they got to Krofa, the policeman in the Land Cruiser shot at them and they lost control and run into a house.”

“They then exchanged fire with the policeman who miraculously sneaked from the car and went behind the robbers and entered a resident’s bedroom and shot the robbers from the bedroom instantly killing both of them. Then the money was retrieved. It was subsequently given to the district commander and later handed over to the cocoa marketing board,” he said.

Superintendent Bossman added that, the police administration will reward the officer for his bravery.

The former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ashaiman, Ibrahim Baidoo, narrowly escaped death at the hands of robbers on Wednesday.

He is currently receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after he was attacked by some three armed robbers in front of his house in the evening at community 22 near in Tema.

According to a source close to Mr. Baidoo, the former MCE was about to enter his community 22 apartment around 7:00pm Wednesday evening, when the armed robbers who were riding on motor bikes crossed him and shot through his car.

[contextly_sidebar id=”7k12a6WhAZP5JExvoxYJxSG2vK7nS4NH”]”From the way the action went, you could say they had targetted to shoot him in the head but missed the target. Though he narrowly escaped the direct shot, effects of the bullet splashed on his eyes and he had to be rushed to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for immediate treatment,” the source narrated.

According to the source, the armed robbers after firing the shots, made away with his private Chrysler salon car.

When Citi News visited the Ashaiman Divisional Police Command Thursday morning, they confirmed the incident but said they are still investigating the matter.

About Ibrahim Baidoo

Ibrahim Baidoo served as MCE for Ashaiman from 2013 to 2017, under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

He came under pressure from members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) when the NDC was defeated in the December 7, 2016 election, after he was accused of trying to approve last minute contracts.

Three persons, who have been using a supposed state protocol vehicle to steal from cell sites belonging to telecommunication companies, have been arrested by the Police at Obuasi junction in the Adansi North District of the Ashanti Region.

The 3 men aged between 25 and 35, have been vandalizing cell sites of telecommunication companies, stealing backup batteries and other valuable items including fire extinguishers and earthing cables.

More than 20 backup batteries belonging to Glo Telecom Company were found in their vehicle, a Nissan Navara pickup with registration number GX 727-15, which has a state Protocol office of the President’s sticker fixed on the windscreen ostensibly to facilitate smooth passage at various Police check points.

For the past two years, many Glo cell sites dotted along the Accra – Cape Coast – Kumasi Highway have been vandalized, and more than 500 backup batteries and other items estimated at Ghc 1 million have been stolen.

The backup batteries serve as alternative power source to sustain the cell sites in the event of ECG power outage, to enable customers communicate continuously without experiencing call drop.

On February 15th, 2017, twelve backup batteries were stolen at a Major HUB SITE at Assin Anyinabrim in the Assin South district in the Central Region.

Following that theft incident, security guards at other Glo sites were instructed to be on high alert.

On February 16th 2017, a day after the Anyinabrim theft incident, a security guard at another major HUB SITE in Assin Asempanaye in the Assin North District of the central region, spotted a blue black Nissan Navara pick-up leaving his site after he had gone for lunch.

Upon checks at the site, he realized again that the backup battery compartment had been vandalized and 12 Batteries stolen.

He quickly alerted the site Engineer and hired a taxicab to track the suspected thieves.

Upon reaching Assin Assin Praso Police check point, the security guard informed the Police officers who in turn sent a wireless message to their colleagues at other Police check Points along the Assin Fosu-Kumasi highway.

Following the tip off, Policemen at a check point at Hwiremoase near Obuasi junction arrested and detained the three young men who offered to pay the Police over Ghc 1000 as bribe, but the policemen declined.

A search conducted on the vehicle revealed more than 20 backup batteries and other items concealed in the bucket of the pick-up.

The suspects, who admitted to the offense of stealing, are now in Police custody at the Assin Praso Police station, pending further investigation, in order for them to be put before court.

Kim Kardashian West has arrived back in New York as the hunt continues for armed robbers dressed as police officers who targeted the American reality TV star in a Paris apartment.

The gang held a gun to Kardashian West’s head during the early morning robbery, before tying her up and locking her in the bathroom.

They then escaped with an estimated €10m (£8.7m; $11.2m) in jewellery.

Her publicist said the star was “badly shaken but physically unharmed”.

The mother-of-two, who became a household name thanks to the reality series Keeping Up With The Kardashians, left France hours later, flying to New York in a private jet.

She was pictured with her mother Kris Jenner – who had been at the Givenchy show with Kardashian West on Sunday in Paris – and husband, the rapper Kanye West, outside their home in the city hours later.

Paris police are continuing to search for the gang of five, two of whom forced their way into Kardashian West’s luxury apartment at about 02:30 on Monday.

“What happened is very unfortunate and those responsible must be severely punished,” French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault told TV5 Monde. “We are fully mobilised to ensure the safety of the French people, as well as all those who visit France, and in particular tourists.”

A police source told the BBC the attack was carried out by five men, wearing police-style jackets, who forced the building’s overnight security guard to show them where Kardashian West was staying.

According to Reuters, the attackers first handcuffed the concierge.

Once inside, one of the men put a gun to Kardashian West’s head while they robbed her of jewellery, including a ring worth €4m. They then tied her up and locked her in a bathroom while they escaped.

According to the police officer, the men fled the scene on bicycles.

They also stole a box of jewellery worth as much as €6m (£5.2m/$6.7m), AP reported, citing police officials.

The robbery made headlines around the globe, and caused a storm on social media – with some celebrities, like Karl Lagerfeld, sharing messages of support with Kardashian West.

But there were also uglier posts about the television star.

TV host James Corden criticised those making light of the incident. He tweeted: “People making jokes about Kim Kardashian tonight would do well to remember that she’s a mother, a daughter, a wife, a friend. Be nice or shut up.”

Speaking in the afternoon, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said she was confident police would quickly identify and arrest the suspects and that the “very rare” incident “in no way calls into question police work or security of public spaces” in Paris.

She added that Kardashian West would “always be welcome in Paris”.

However, Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, a right-wing member of Paris council and a potential candidate in next year’s presidential election, said the robbery was proof that “there is a general emergency on security” in the French capital.

“Regardless of all the very expensive advertising we do to promote `I Love Paris’, tourism and the image of Paris, all these ads have been brutally cancelled by the Kim Kardashian case,” Ms Kosciusko-Morizet told Europe 1 radio.

Kardashian West’s husband, the rapper Kanye West, was on stage at the Meadows Music and Arts Festival in New York at the time of the robbery. He abruptly ended his set, telling fans: “I’m sorry, family emergency. I have to stop the show.”

Kardashian West stayed at the luxury residence, in a discreet building behind the city’s Madeleine church, with several secret entrances, at least once before, in 2014 before her marriage to West.

A stay can cost as much as €15,000 a night.

It is unclear if the couple’s two children, three-year-old daughter North and 10-month-old son Saint, were at the home at the time. Police were guarding the site on Monday.

The star was in Paris for the city’s fashion week with her mother Kris Jenner and her sister Kendall Jenner.

Last week she was approached by a prankster who tried to kiss her bottom but was stopped by a bodyguard.

Kardashian West first rose to fame as a friend and stylist to Paris Hilton.

Like a plot twist’ – media reaction in France and the US

While the French media look to politicians for answers on how such a robbery could happen in Paris, already damaged by recent terror attacks, the American newspapers have turned the spotlight on Kardashian West herself.

“We are in a state of emergency and five people dressed as policemen manage to break into a luxury hotel that houses a celebrity! It’s pretty ridiculous,” tourism expert Didier Arino told Le Figaro.

Meanwhile, Paris Match spoke to Jeanne d’Hauteserre, the area’s mayor, who was outraged by the robbery: “I am going to demand a meeting with the head of the police. I don’t want the 8th arrondissement to appear in the ‘news’ column each day.”

But across the Atlantic the New York Daily News took its lead from social media posts which questioned whether or not the entire robbery was “too good to be true”. “Something’s not right. This doesn’t feel like a heist. It feels like a plot twist for a season premiere,” wrote Gersh Kuntzman.

The New York Post turned to the reality television star’s former bodyguard for insight.

Steve Stanulis, who worked for the power couple during New York Fashion Week, was not sympathetic, blaming Kardashian West for making herself a target. He told the newspaper: “Kim’s social media and her Snapchat is her undoing. When she is posting, ‘Here I am, and this is the $5 million ring I am wearing, here’s where I am going,’ you are basically inviting someone to rob you.”

England captain Steven Gerrard has retired from international football after winning 114 caps.

Gerrard, 34, won his first cap in a 2-0 win over Ukraine in 2000 and played for the last time at the 2014 World Cup in a 0-0 draw with Costa Rica.

“I have enjoyed every minute of representing my country. It’s a sad day for me,” the Liverpool midfielder said.

Gerrard will now assume a “high profile” ambassadorial role with the Football Association.

The England midfielder scored 21 times and represented his country at six major tournaments.

“It was a very difficult decision to make. It’s something I have been contemplating for a long time, not just since the end of the World Cup,” the Liverpool skipper said.

“I’ve had to take an awful lot of advice from people who are close to me – players that I still play with, ex-players who I played with a long time ago, managers who I played for years ago.

“It’s been a really tough decision, certainly one of the toughest since I turned professional at 18.”

Gerrard will continue his club career with Liverpool, with whom he made his debut in 1998 against Blackburn Rovers.
