The alleged accidental killing of a Ghanaian by a Chinese national at Wassa Akropong in the Wassa Amenfi East District, of the Western Region, has sparked riots in the town.

The Chinese national is said to have accidentally shot and killed the Ghanaian, whose identity is unknown for now.

Assets belonging to the Chinese are said to have been set ablaze by irate youth, who are protesting the death of the victim. About twelve cars are believed to have been burnt so far.

According to eyewitnesses, over eight vehicles belonging to the Chinese have already been set ablaze, whilst other properties are under attack.

Eyewitnesses also say a joint task-force of military and police officers have arrived at the scene trying to take control the situation.

Speaking to Citi News, a local reporter with Rivers FM at Wassa Akropong, narrated that at about 4:30 pm, today [Friday], residents got wind of a brawl between two Chinese at a casino in the town near a filling station.

In the course of the confusion, one of the Chinese allegedly fired a shot from the casino, killing instantly the Ghanaian who was fueling his car at a nearby fuel station.

“I saw the army and policemen, they are around here. But they could not stop what the youth in the town are doing now. They [the youth] are burning the houses around and their cars… the fire service came here but they didn’t get the chance to even quench the fire.”

The eyewitness also said the rioting youth were not allowing the overwhelmed security personnel to call for backup.

“I heard one military officer, but they are not allowing anybody to record or to take photos or to make calls. So the guys even warned a military man not to make any calls so they are just standing here. I can see only three military men and four policemen.”

Most of the Chinese nationals in the area allegedly engage in illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.

Police in Brazil are stepping up their search for more than 100 prisoners who are still on the run after escaping from adjoining prisons in the northern state of Amazonas on 1 January.

Officials have confirmed that of the 184 inmates that escaped, 70 have been captured, leaving 114 still at large.

Among those on the run is Brayan Bremer, who posted pictures of himself on the run on social media.
About 100 federal officers have been sent to Amazonas to boost the search.

Amazonas governor Jose Melo requested the help of the federal government on Sunday, saying Amazonas were “at their physical and psychological limit”.

The prisoners escaped from the Anisio Jobim jail in Manaus and the neighbouring Antonio Trindad prison as a deadly riot was under way in the former.

The director of the Anisio Jobim jail, Jose Carvalho da Silva, has since been suspended over allegations he took money from the Familia do Norte gang in exchange for turning a blind eye to drugs and weapons beings smuggled into the jail.

Investigators say the Familia do Norte instigated the riot and specifically targeted members of rival gang First Capital Command (PCC).

Mr Silva is also accused of allowing inmates to flee the prison in exchange for money.

He had been put in charge of the jail on 28 December in an interim capacity, after serving as deputy head.

Two inmates made the allegations against him in separate letters sent to the authorities three weeks before the riot.

In the letters, the inmates say that Mr Silva had threatened to move them from a secure area of the jail into a “general population” area, even though they had received death threats and a judge had ordered they be kept separate from the general prison population.

The two were among the 56 inmates killed during the riot on 1 January.

Atletico Madrid took all Real Madrid had to throw at them as they won 2-1 at the Bernabeu.

Last season’s surprise champions weathered a first-half storm after Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty cancelled out Tiago’s opener, and their resolve was worth it as they won it in the 76th minute.

Substitute Arda Turan got their winner, but all their players were heroes as budgets were again made a mockery of as Diego Simeone’s men won across the city for the second time in two seasons.

Real’s Galacticos had no answer to Atleti’s steel and this success comes after the Red and Whites won the Super Cup against the European champions earlier this month.

The magnitude of that cannot be understood until the ins and outs of each side are considered. Real signed the likes of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez in the summer while, Atleti, as is their way, lost their best performers in Diego Costa and Thibaut Courtois.

Simeone is somehow able to refresh the quality in his side, though, and consistently finds ways to keep pace with Atleti’s fellow title contenders.

Even with their coach suspended for eight games and watching from an executive box Atleti find a way to perform and they did just that from the 10th minute onwards.

Koke’s corner from the left found Tiago at the near post and unchallenged, four yards out, he nodded in the opener.

That sparked Real into life and they dominated the rest of the half.

Ronaldo’s cross found Rodriquez, who hit the ball down into the ground and watched as it bounced over, before Karim Benzema sent an opportunistic curling effort just over.

It looked for all the world that Real had equalised in the 23rd minute as Gareth Bale cracked a brilliant free-kick over the wall but saw Miguel Moya produce an improbable stop away to his left.

The pressure did tell, though, and Real levelled in the 25th minute. Ronaldo ran at Guilherme Siqueira and confused him with stepovers. As the left-back offered him a leg, Ronaldo took it, went to ground and won a penalty which he converted away to Moya’s right.

Ronaldo dragged a shot wide straight after and should have laid on a second but after playing Benzema clean through he saw his team-mate overrun the ball and allow Moya to come out and block him off.

It was excellent keeping from Moya but nothing compared to the brilliant save he made from the France international just before the break, going down low to his right to dig out a header that was going in the bottom corner.

Level at the break, Real looked devoid of ideas in the second half and started to wane, with new signing Javier Hernandez sent on in the pursuit of goals.

It was at the other end where the net rippled, though, as Atleti got ahead again.

Turan signalled his intent with a shot across the face of goal and should actually have done better as he got to a Juanfran cross from the right but could not get it on target.

But he found his range with 14 minutes left, stroking in from 12 yards after Raul Garcia stepped over a Juanfran cross from the right.

Real had no answer and Simeone was left to celebrate wildly from his vantage point high in the stands.

New signing James Rodriguez scored his first goal for Real Madrid but a late Raul Garcia equaliser for Atletico Madrid saw the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup finish 1-1.

Former Monaco striker Rodriguez, the Golden Boot winner at this summer’s World Cup, netted in the 80th minute.

But Garcia scrambled the ball home from a corner as the La Liga champions levelled before Friday’s second leg.

Real’s Cristiano Ronaldo came off at half-time with a suspected back injury.

The world player of the year was replaced by Rodriguez as the Colombia international made his first appearance at the Bernabeu Stadium, where supporters had paid tribute to club legend Alfredo Di Stefano before kick-off.

And the Champions League winners, who added the Uefa Super Cup to their collection by beating Sevilla in Cardiff last week, were a more potent force after the break.

Gareth Bale twice went close for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, first seeing an angled drive saved by Miguel Angel Moya and then testing the keeper again with a fiercely struck free-kick.

Moya was unable to hold the Welshman’s effort but new Real signing Toni Kroos was unable to convert the rebound.

However, World Cup winner Kroos was involved in the opening goal, the Germany international playing in Daniel Carvajal to cross low into the box.

Karim Benzema’s shot was then blocked but the ball fell for Rodriguez, who steered it home from eight yards out on 80 minutes.

That looked likely to give Real the advantage going into the return leg at the Vicente Calderon stadium but Atletico again showed their resilience to hit back.

Diego Simeone’s side, who have lost the services of Diego Costa,Filipe Luis, David Villa and Thibaut Courtois since their defeat by Real in the Champions League final, were unbeaten against both Real and Barcelona last season.

And they extended that record when Garcia flicked the ball past Iker Casillas from inside the six-yard box.

Chelsea have announced that they have reached agreement with Atletico Madrid over a fee for left-back Filipe Luis.

The 28-year-old Brazilian will complete a move to Jose Mourinho’s team as long as personal terms can be agreed.

Luis will give Mourinho the extra option he needs at left-back following the departure of the experienced Ashley Cole, who was allowed to leave when his contract expired at the end of last season and has signed a deal with Roma.

Cesar Azpilicueta ws preferred to Cole at left-back for much of last season but is a right-back by trade and Luis’s arrival may allow him to switch back to his favoured side.

Luis was a key player for Atletico during their incredible 2013/14 campaign, when they won the La Liga title for the first time since 1996 and lost to local rivals Real in the Champions League final.

The former Deportivo man made 44 appearances over the course of the campaign and many experts felt he should have been selected for the Brazil World Cup squad but he was only named as a stand-by.

His potential move to London has been in the works for a while and the fee will reportedly be in the region of £20m.

An Atletico statement read: “Atletico Madrid and Chelsea have reached an agreement to transfer the rights of Filipe Luis, pending a medical with the English club.

“The Brazilian player told our club at the end of the campaign about his willingness to join the London side.”

Chelsea already have one former Atletico player in their ranks for the upcoming season after forward Diego Costa signed a five-year deal on Tuesday.

Bayern Munich have confirmed that a verbal agreement has been reached between the club, Mario Mandzukic and Atletico Madrid regarding the transfer of the player to the Spanish capital.

The German champions confirmed the agreement at a press conference to outdoor their new signings, Robert Lewandowski and Sebastian Rode.

The club’s sporting director, Matthias Sammer told reporters:  “There is a verbal agreement between FC Bayern, Atlético Madrid and Mario Mandzukic.

“Although nothing has been signed yet, I believe that we all will stay true to our words.

Mandzukic had been linked with a move to England, with Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United touted as possible destinations.

The move to the Spanish champions materialised as a result of the sale of the club’s top scorer last season, Diego Costa, to Chelsea.

“We want to thank Mario Mandzukic for his performances at FC Bayern and wish him all the best for the future,” Sammer added.

The striker, who joined Bayern from Wolfsburg in 2012, scored 33 goals in 54 appearances in the league for the club, winning the treble with Bayern in 2013.

Despite this healthy scoring record, Mandzukic was deemed surplus to requirements at Bayern by Pep Guardiola, particularly after the signing of Robert Lewandowski from Dortmund.

Spain striker Diego Costa has passed a medical at Chelsea ahead of a proposed £32m transfer from Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea met the buyout clause in the 25-year-old’s contract with Atletico and he will now negotiate personal terms.

Costa scored 36 goals in 52 games for Atletico this season as they won their first La Liga title since 1996 and reached the Champions League final.

The Brazil-born forward is in Spain’s World Cup squad.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said in May that the addition of a “killer” strikerwould be a key priority during the summer.

The London club scored 71 goals in the Premier League this season, 31 fewer than champions Manchester City, who finished four points ahead of them.

Chelsea strikers Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba contributed a total of 19 of those in the league, with 33-year-old Eto’o, now a free agent, scoring nine of them.

“We have to try to win as a team, to improve as a team, but also add the attacking player with that killer instinct,” Mourinho said last month.

Mourinho will hope that Costa will go some way towards addressing that problem having enjoyed a prolific campaign with Atletico.

Costa scored 27 goals in La Liga and only finished third behind Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo (31) and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi (28) on the list of top goalscorers.

The striker also scored against Chelsea from the penalty spot in the semi-finals of the Champions League, one of his eight goals in the tournament, as Atletico came from behind to win 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Costa was born and raised in Brazil and made two friendly appearances for them last year before he became a naturalised Spaniard.

Atletico Madrid and Barcelona will play a La Liga title decider at the Nou Camp stadium next weekend after leaders Atletico drew 1-1 at home to Malaga and second-placed Barca were held to a 0-0 stalemate at Elche on Sunday.

On a day of nerve-jangling tension, when Atletico came desperately close to a late goal that would have clinched the championship, Real Madrid dropped out of the title race when they suffered a surprise 2-0 loss at Celta Vigo that left them five points behind their city rivals with one game remaining.

Atletico are top on 89 points from 37 matches, with Barca on 86 and Real, who were missing key players through injury at Celta including top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, on 84.

If Barca beat Atletico next Sunday they will be champions as they would have a better head-to-head record after the title rivals drew 0-0 at the Calderon in Madrid in January.

A draw would be enough for Atletico to secure their first domestic league title since 1996, when current coach Diego Simeone was in the team, and become the first team other than Spain’s wealthy big two to win La Liga since Valencia in 2004.

Samuel Sanchez gave Malaga a shock lead 25 minutes from time at Atletico’s packed Calderon stadium, where the fans have been enjoying the club’s best season in years.

Jose Sosa levelled for the home side, who play Real in the Champions League final on May 24, in the 74th minute and Adrian came close to a winner in stoppage time but was denied by a brilliant save from Malaga goalkeeper Willy Caballero.

At Elche’s Martinez Valero arena in Alicante, Barca created plenty of chances but as so often this season they failed to take them.

Their bid for a fifth La Liga title in six seasons remains alive, however, despite consecutive draws as Atletico again failed to take advantage of Barca’s stumble.

Real’s faint hopes of pipping Atletico and Barca to the title were extinguished when a Charles double either side of halftime condemned them to a defeat that ended their chances of a Champions League, La Liga and King’s Cup treble.
