“I have just come back from Sierra Leone and the situation there is not pleasant at all. The people of Sierra Leone are calling for more of such donations. I had a call from my deputy while there that this is what you are also doing. I never estimated it this way that we were going to receive many things like this. So you’ve done a very wonderful job.”

Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia will visit Sierra Leone on Saturday, August 19 to commiserate with its citizens after the mudslide and flooding disaster.

Monday’s natural disaster, which hit the community of Regent on the outskirts of Freetown left over 400 people dead and thousands displaced.

Ahead of his trip, the government will airlift relief items to Sierre Leone later today [Friday].

The relief items, comprising food, medicines, clothing, and logistics, are estimated to cost $1 million.

The government set up a relief centre at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to receive donations from the public.

The relief items will be timely as there is growing concern about the risk to public health from water-borne diseases such as cholera.

Serria Leone President, Ernest Koroma, when he visited the disaster stricken area, called on the international community to provide “urgent support”.

Sierra Leone’s presidential spokesperson, Abdulai Baraytay said the situation on the ground was critical when he spoke to Citi FM a day after the mass burials for the dead.

“We are dealing with a humanitarian situation. We have young people being displaced, people being orphaned, we have problems of medication and medical supplies. We needed sheltered and tents to help the people temporarily. Just this morning, the chief medical has also raised the huge concern of the potential of a cholera outbreak.”

“We continue to appeal to the international community and our friends in the sub region to come to our aid in this dire need… we need even social workers,” Mr. Baraytay said.

Citi FM is also collecting relief items to support victims of the disaster.

Citi FM has been accepting donations in the form of clothes, blankets, and student mattresses as part of the Supporting Sierra Leone initiative.

Ghana President, Nana Akufo-Addo has said his government is in the process of sending relief items to Sierra Leone following a tragic mudslide and flooding disaster that has claimed many lives in the West African country.

Saddened by the development Akufo-Addo took to his Twitter handle to make the announcement and expressed his condolences.

“Government is in the process of sending relief items to Sierra Leone to aid in the recovery process,” he tweeted on Thursday.

Health Officials in Sierra Leone say nearly half of the 400 people known to have died in a mudslide and flooding that occurred at the outskirt of the country’s capital Freetown have already been buried.

About 600 people are said to be still missing.

The Sierra Leonean government subsequently postponed the mass burial of the dead bodies to Thursday to allow relatives to identify their loved ones.

4,000 lives claimed in Ebola outbreak, 50,000 in civil war

This development comes on the back of the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus which claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 people in Sierra Leone in 2014.

Prior to that about 50,000 people also died during a decade long civil war in that country.
