Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on Wednesday January 18, unexpectedly paid a visit to the Registrar-General’s Department to identify the bottlenecks to acquaint himself with the activities of the state institution, and also to find out its challenges.

Dr. Bawumia interacted with owners of businesses and Ghanaians who were at the Department to register their businesses.

He met a lot of people at the registry who also expressed their frustrations with the “bureaucratic processes” in registering their establishments.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the vision of the NPP administration is to make Ghana a “business friendly country” and that dream must begin with the Registrar-General’s Department.

Rwanda is currently ranked the most business-friendly country in Africa.

Speaking later with the acting Registrar General Mrs. Jemima Oware, who was visibly surprised about the visit, Dr. Bawumia noted that, the Akufo-Addo-led administration is hoping to use the East African country’s feat as a “benchmark.”

He thus urged authorities of the department to learn lessons from Rwanda, and implement same.

“It was a fulfilled visit and there will be follow-up discussions,” Dr. Bawumia told the media after being briefed about the business registration process.

He served notice there will be more of such surprise visits to other state institutions to make sure “things work in Ghana.”

Dr. Bawumia appealed to officials at the Department to speed up the processes and to do their best to position Ghana as a business-friendly environment.

Mrs. Oware complained about the three-month-old state attorneys strike which she said is taking a toll on the process because state lawyers are needed to review people’s applications.

“The challenges that RGD had was, because it was manual it was faced with delays. To search for a name it will probably take 2 to 3 months because you must check through all the books to find out whether the name was there or not. But now it’s been put on the data base and with the click of a buttom, you can search of a name which was our major challenge.”

Nana Prempeh said, the e-portal will bring relief to persons who would have travelled to Tamale or Accra to register their businesses to now do their business registration anywhere in the country with internet connectivity.

He further reiterated that, the e-registration portal is aimed at saving time and cost of registrants.

Participants were taken through the procedure for registering their entities using the e-portal.

One requires a Taxpayer registration number (TIN) from the Ghana Revenue Authority to log onto the e-registration portal for registration process.

Earlier, some of the concerned customers raised their dissatisfaction at what they said was the lack of official correspondence from the Official Liquidator.

But Jemima Oware responded as, “We have published the information in the national news papers… there are about 63,000 to 70,000 creditors; as such we cannot be able to call them up individually. So once we are aware that the media has been able to get wind of the information, we consider it circulated. And we equally expect them to inform other creditors.”

DKM’s operations were suspended by the Bank of Ghana in 2015 after the central bank cited the company for failing to comply with laid down rules on operations in the financial industry.
