A project from Ghana was among fifteen finalists selected for a World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) prize.

The project, called REACH (Reaching and Teaching Out-of-School Children in Ghana), is dedicated to helping Ghanaian children who have been out of school for an extended period transition back into primary school.

Students enrolled in REACH are offered a nine-month education program that will help them catch up on what they have missed.

REACH is a collaboration between Plan International, the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, and local communities.

The World Innovation Summit for Education recognizes and promotes projects that are addressing global educational challenges. The topics include early childhood education, basic infrastructure for schools, and girls’ education.

REACH also involves a five-year program that “will enroll 90,000 boys and girls from 34 of the most disadvantaged districts across five regions of Ghana in a child-friendly, locally adapted education,” states the WISE website.

The work of the education-based program also involves gender equality and changing community perceptions of girls and women.

Of the fifteen finalists, six will be selected for the $20,000 award at the WISE conference in November.
