Railways Development Minister Joe Ghartey on Wednesday sent a clear signal to staff of his abhorrent to lateness to work when he sent home 14 staff who reported to work late.

They comprise nine permanent staff and five national service personnel.

The action demonstrate that workers should be disciplined in the discharge of their duties.

The Minister did not take any further action against the workers and therefore, the affected workers reported to work yesterday very early.

“It was a wake up call and I will monitor their response which I believe will be positive”, he stated.

Speaking to The Finder, the minister declined to reveal his next steps to instill discipline in staff of his ministry.

” I have to put on record that the staff have worked very hard last year but I am just asking them to work harder”, he added.

The Minister for Railways Development, Joe Ghartey, has constituted a 3-member committee to look into circumstances that led to the derailment of an Accra-bound train from Tema on Monday morning.

The committee, which is being chaired by the Deputy Railways Minister, Kwaku Agyenim-Boateng, is to complete work and present their report in 10 days, that is November 6th, 2017.

[contextly_sidebar id=”bGs7bTa8z09FknCYBlQtV4AoEJ5EYCfY”]Among other things, the committee is expected to ascertain the cause of the accident and make recommendations on how to avert any such happenings in the future, and also when the rail line should be reopened.

Joe Ghartey, in a statement copied to citifmonline.com, said the Ministry will bear all the medical bills of persons who were injured in the accident.

He noted that, maintenance was being carried out on the Accra-Nsawam rain line which has not been in use since  September.

“The Accra-Nsawam Line has been closed since September, and government has released money for the rehabilitation of the Line. In the past three weeks, permanent workers of the Ghana Railways Company Limited have been doing routine maintenance on the Accra-Nsawam Line. The team has been sent to Juaso for a special exercise and they are returning to the Accra-Nsawam Line next week,” he said.

Joe Ghartey added that, the committee, which has Lord Quansah (Director, Regulations and Assurance, Ghana Railways Development Authority) and Michael Adjei Anyetei (Deputy Managing Director) as members, are to hold private and public sittings on the incident.

The state of Ghana’s rail lines/coaches

The Accra-Nsawam shuttle serves thousands of commuters to and from the capital on a daily basis, making at least four trips, but is largely considered a death trap.

It is the most convenient mode of commuting for most people living in Accra and Nsawam, especially, traders who convey farm produce and processed food from Nsawam to Accra each day.

But the state of the country’s rail tracks, and even the trains themselves, put passengers at risk.

The University of Leicester is claiming to have the UK’s youngest ever PhD student – with a 15-year-old studying in the politics department.

Eugenie de Silva’s doctorate is going to focus on “denial and deception in World War Two”.

The teenager lives in Tennessee in the United States, but will study for her PhD by distance learning.

Her supervisor, Prof Mark Phythian, said there was “no doubt about her ability”.

Prof Phythian, head of the politics and international relations department, said the young student had been interviewed by Skype and in terms of academic rigour there would be “no concessions” for her age.

He added Ms de Silva was “very well adjusted and engaging”.

She will be expected to come to Leicester for some face-to-face sessions and exams during the course of her doctorate studies, which could last between three and six years.

‘Intelligence studies’

Jackie Dunne, dean of distance education, said that PhDs by distance learning were becoming “an increasingly popular option”.

Ms de Silva already has a master’s degree in intelligence studies from a US university – and she has co-authored a textbook called Multidisciplinary Research for College Students.

She is the daughter of an academic, Prof Eugene de Silva, who had moved to the UK from Sri Lanka and then moved to the United States, where he teaches physics and chemistry at Walters State Community College.

Ms de Silva wanted to study with Prof Phythian at Leicester University because she had come across his work while studying for her previous degrees.

In an interview with the University of Leicester, she said she “always had an avid interest in intelligence studies”, which had inspired her interest in her PhD topic of wartime deception.

Asked about being under too much pressure at a young age, she said her interest in the subject made her academic work enjoyable and that she had a “quite normal childhood”.

When asked about people’s reactions to starting a PhD at such a young age, she said: “The common reaction that I receive is shock or disbelief.”
