The University for Development Studies (UDS), will from next academic year (2018/2019), introduce a new faculty and programmes as part of efforts to produce critical human resource for the development of the country.

The new programmes include Bachelor of Dental Surgery, BSc. Health Education and Promotion, BSc. Medical Records and Health Information Systems, BSc. Medical Imaging Technology, BSc. Anaesthesia, BSc. Dietetics, Certificate in law, and Faculty of Geosciences.

Professor Seidu Al-hassan, Pro Vice-Chancellor of UDS, who announced this during the UDS’ 25th matriculation ceremony in Tamale on Friday, said “these programmes have been recommended and approved by the Academic Programmes Committee and the Academic Board for implementation.”

The UDS admitted 7,971 undergraduate applicants out of the total number of 11,531 applicants to pursue various degree programmes at all its four campuses (Tamale, Nyankpala, Navrongo and Wa) for the 2017/2018 academic year.

Professor Al-hassan said, “The University shall continue to mount programmes that are relevant to Ghana’s development aspirations and to the enhancement of quality of the communities.”

He said the UDS’ Parallel Medical Programme would begin in January, 2018, to increase the intake of students to pursue medicine in the country.

He said Management of UDS was committed to students’ welfare, and would continue to improve the conditions in the hostels on the University’s campuses to make life comfortable for students.

Professor Al-hassan called on traditional rulers, opinion leaders and owners of hostel facilities, to take appropriate steps to beef-up security in the private hostels, to ensure safety and security of students and their property, advising students to be security conscious.

President Nana Akufo-Addo says his administration will undertake initiatives that will empower Ghanaian women to achieve their full potential.

The President said his government has already started rolling out some social intervention programmes that will empower women, and make their lives better.

[contextly_sidebar id=”cWnHCk6g3KToxkyCkkFCDigEpmMpYo66″]Speaking at the Ministry of Gender, Women and Social Protection as part of activities to mark International Women’s Day on Wednesday, the President said Ghana will be a better place if “our women are protected and empowered.

“As you all know, this year, the free SHS policy will come on and this will help women. The NPP has put in place programmes and policies that will make life better for the Ghanaian woman. You have a strong and dedicated Minister who is always talking about the rights of women. If she continues this way, I am sure Ghanaian women will be better.”

Meanwhile, the First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has pledged to advocate for an increase in women participation in politics.

This she says would help in mainstreaming gender issues whilst promoting women empowerment and equality.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the International Women’s day celebration, the First Lady bemoaned the low level of women participation especially in decision making, thus her resolve to use her influence to improve the situation.

“The world economic forum predicts the gender gap won’t close entirely until 2186. But we cannot wait that long. That is why the idea of being bold for change is so important. We need more female voices in politics and policy making. We need more female voices in academia, industry, business, finance, agriculture, the arts and many more areas. It’s going to be an arduous battle, but I believe we are up to it.”

Human Rights Division of the Accra High Court has adjourned to June 2, 2014, the case in which DSP Gifty Mawuenyega Tehoda is suing the Ghana Police Service for the wrongful termination of her appointment among other reliefs.

Joy Fm’s Evans Mensah was in court on Tuesday with copies of an interview with COP Rose Bio Atinga which lawyers of Gifty Tehoda are presenting as evidence.

But the court could not hear the evidence as a CD player was not available.

In an interview with Citi News, lawyer for DSP Tehoda, E. A Voduagu stated that the said interview with COP Rose Bio Atinga was once played in court as evidence “however, when it came to a stage where he had to leave a copy with the court, he was not having enough copies.”

The court therefore, ordered Mr. Mensah to make enough copies for the court but when the copies were brought to court, a CD player was not available to play back the interview.

Lawyer Voduagu told Citi News, the court has ordered them to make available a CD player during the next court sitting “so that we can play the CD to the hearing of everybody and at that stage, we can tender it in as evidence.

The case involving DSP Tehoda began on September 27, 2011 when one Nana Ama Martin’s was arrested for possessing large parcels suspected to be cocaine which later turned into bicarbonate or baking soda.

DSP Tehoda was linked to the deal for which reason she was interdicted and subsequently dismissed from the Ghana Police Service as Deputy Commander in charge of the Commercial Crimes Unit of the Ghana Police Service.
