The Metropolitan Chief Executive Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly [KMA], Osei Asibey Antwi, has told Citi News that the responsibility of fixing deplorable roads in the ‘garden city’, does not fall within the remit of the Assembly.

Residents have complained about the bad nature of roads particularly in the capital, which they say has worsened human and vehicular traffic.

[contextly_sidebar id=”Iimz5PfKT8VQ0BUWU0tLrZcR9TAPKwlX”]In an interview with the Host of the Citi Breakfast Show, Bernard Avle on the sidelines of the Investors Forum in Accra, Asibey Antwi explained that the cost involved in fixing roads goes beyond the Assembly.

He was however quick to add that the Assembly had submitted requests to the Ministries of Roads and Highways, and Transport for the roads to be fixed.

“You will bear with me that when it comes to roads, it is beyond the capacity of the metro funds and therefore what we can do as city managers is to report to the authorities. Now we have been able to capture all our roads, and if you match our roads to all the cities within the country, Kumasi roads are the poorest.

“Now we have submitted all the detailed list to the Ministry for Roads, and Transport Ministry, and we are waiting for an action to be taken but now I can confidently say that the government is going to work on it.”

‘Kejetia project on course’

On the Kejetia development project, Mr. Asibey Antwi explained that, the project was delayed due to some legal hurdles.

He was however quick to add, that these issues had been resolved.

“Kejetia project has gone far. It was unduly delayed because of the legal issue that affected the project, but now with the involvement of chiefs, we have been able to solve that issue; now that the legal issue has been solved the contractor has been given the green light to start working on those areas that were being contested.”

We deserve better projects

Just recently, Bantamahene, Baffuor Owusu Amankwatia VI, also bemoaned the poor road infrastructure and its attendant problems on lawlessness in the area.

Bantamahene told journalists in Kumasi that, “they (chiefs) are appalled by poor road networks and general lawlessness in Kumasi.”

Major parts of roads in Koforidua in the New Juaben Municipality of the Eastern Region, have developed deep potholes in less than 6 months after construction.

The Koforidua roads were asphalted in December 2016 at the peak of the electioneering campaign. At the time, many believed it was to woo them to vote for the then National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

Areas from Methodist school through the central business district to Nsukwao, Effiduase and Asokore, were asphalted; but 6 months into its completion, the shoddy work done has been exposed by the rains.

Kwaku Ankomah Asare, the assembly man for Sushyen, who is also the sub-works committee chairman for the New Juaben Municipal Assembly in an interview with Citi News, questioned the processes under which the contracts were awarded.

He said “we were all here in December when some machines and equipment were brought into town and the subsequent days we saw roads being asphalted. I must say that these construction contracts did not pass through the municipal assembly. I can say with authority that as the chairman of the assembly’s sub-works committee we were not informed about it so we couldn’t have controlled and monitored the construction.”

The asphalt roads are not the only in the municipality with the problem, but all other roads in the areas are in such a deplorable state.

Some residents of Nungua C5 say they will vote out President Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) despite the commencement of construction works on their roads.

The residents, on Monday, woke up to the commencement of the construction of their roads along the Leisure Hours Hotel.

Heavy construction machines were spotted leveling the road in the early hours of the day but some residents are unimpressed.

According to them, government has ignored their plea to construct their roads for years.

They believe the construction, which has began barely eight days to the general elections is an attempt to buy their votes a bait, they say they will not fall for.

A resident who spoke to Citi News said : “We feel quite disappointed and we feel that the government has deceived us for a long time. For so many years that this President has been in power we cried for this road to be tarred or levelled for us but they never listened to us. Eight days to election, they are now busy trying to clear the road and this is very disappointing. We believe they are doing this because of votes but this time they will not get what they want. They should have done this road long time ago. This is vote buying…”

Another said:  “We have asked for new roads for sometime now and it’s barely seven days to election and they are now clearing the road for us. Constructing the roads for us will not convince me to vote for that party.”

One other resident clearly stated that government’s decision to construct the roads , a few days to election will not change his mind.

“This can never change my mind because he [the President] wants to do that for us to vote for him and that won’t happen.”

Some residents in Kpasa in the Nkwanta North Constituency in the Volta region are threatening to vote against President John Mahama if the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) fails to construct some roads in the region.

The residents in the region say several attempts to get government to fix their roads have proved futile.

Speaking at a gathering of some chiefs and residents in the area ahead of President Mahama’s speech delivery, the paramount chief, Ubor Tasan Gonja VI therefore appealed to government to construct the roads.

Ubor talked about the 25km Nkwanta -Kpasa road which is in a deplorable state adding that his subjects would vote massively for the President in the general elections if these promises are fulfilled.

“We have a number of concerns we wish to lay before you. First and foremost, among them is the need for urgent action to be taken on the 25 kilometers Kpasa stretch on the Eastern corridor roads. This concern has become more alarming especially when Dedo Pepeso to Nkwanta stretch has been completed and the Daamongo to Bimbilla strech is also being worked on.”

Poor roads in Volta Region

Earlier this year [2016] President Mahama in his State of the Nation Address claimed that some roads , including Hohoe roads in the Volta Region had been constructed.

Citi News’ checks however revealed that the only roads in the Hohoe Township that had been given minor face-lift, were roads that were done four years ago.
