Three persons, comprising a soldier, a policeman and an unemployed man, have been arrested for allegedly attacking and robbing some customers of banks on the Spintex Road, Lapaz and other parts of Accra.

The names of the suspects have been given by the police as Corporal Bernard Tsagli, a soldier attached to the 37 Military Hospital; Corporal Isaac Amejor, a policeman attached to the Rapid Deployment Force (RDF) Unit at the Police Headquarters, and Crosby Ofori, aka Fiifi, unemployed.

They are said to have been harassing their victims and taking money from them at gunpoint.

Complaints

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr George Alex Mensah, said the police had received numerous complaints from persons who had fallen victim to the operations of the soldier and his accomplices.

He said most of the victims, who were accosted after withdrawing various amounts of money from their bank accounts, claimed they were falsely arrested by some men in military and police uniforms on allegations that they (the victims) had obtained their money through fraud.

Mr Mensah said one of the victims had reported to the police that four military men in uniform who were using a taxi had dragged her from a public commercial vehicle, claiming they were arresting her for cashing money she had obtained through cybercrime from a bank.

He added that the suspected robbers allegedly collected GH¢4,000 from the victim at gunpoint and later abandoned her at a place.

Another victim is also said to have reported to the La-Bawaleshie Police that about 3:30 p.m. on February 2, 2018, four men in police and military uniforms aboard a taxi cab robbed him of GH¢2,265 at gunpoint.

Most of the victims said they were robbed after withdrawing money from the Mile Seven branch of the Global Access Bank, while others said they were attacked at Lapaz, the Spintex Road, Abattoir and some other parts of Accra.

Police intelligence, according to Mr Mensah, showed that the suspected robbers sometimes laid ambush near a bank to monitor their victims, trail and attack them on the road or in their homes.

He noted that the police arrested the three suspects, based on intelligence, at the Mile 7 Goil Filling Station while they were trying to take money from one of their victims.

He said the police had since commenced investigations into the matter.

Earlier arrest

This is the second time that Corporal Tsagli has been arrested in connection with a similar crime.

On May 14, 2017, he was arrested, together with a taxi driver, when he pulled over a taxi at the Nhyiraba Kojo City Night Club, near the Sakumono Community 18 Global Access Bank in Accra after he had allegedly collected GH¢1,500 from one of his victims.

During a search on the two suspects after their arrest, the police retrieved a taser and a pair of handcuffs believed to have been used to harass their victims.

Three men have been arrested and detained by the police over a failed attempt to rob a fuel station at Abinkyim, near Asante-Bekwai in the Ashanti Region.

Their names were given as Boakye Ansah, a former employee of the fuel station believed to be the leader of the gant, Samuel Agyekum and Innocent Amoako, alias ‘Stonky’.

Commissioner of Police (COP) Ken Yeboah, the Ashanti Regional Commander, told journalists in Kumasi that the incident happened deep in the night of Thursday, March 08.

They had engaged the services of a taxi driver from Anhwiankwanta to the fuel station, and when they got to place, Ansah changed into a jacket similar to the one worn by attendants of the station.

Amoako, who had concealed a pistol in a long white dress he was wearing, quickly moved into the office of the manager with one of the suspects as their other colleague waited outside.

They did not however meet the manager, and the police, who had already received information about the planned robbery, struck before they could escape in the hired taxi.

They were arrested, and a search conducted on them uncovered a pistol, kitchen knives, a mask and gloves.

COP Yeboah said the three were being held in police custody together with the taxi driver to assist in their investigation.

One of the escapees of the Kwabenya police shooting,  Emmanuel Kotey, has been arrested at Asikasu near Adeiso in the Upper West Akim District of the Eastern Region.

Kotey, who was allegedly part of those who broke jail at Kwabenya during which police Inspector Emmanuel Ashilevi of the Kwabenya Police in the Greater Accra Region was shot and killed in January 2018, was arrested by the Asamankese District Police on Friday, March 9, 2018.

Kotey, according to the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police ( ASP), Ebenezer Tetteh, was arrested in his hideout in the cocoa growing community of Asikasu following intelligence picked up by the Eastern Regional Police Command.

“I have since informed Kwabenya police to come for him”, he told the Daily Graphic.

Hide out

This is the second time in one week that the Eastern Regional Police Command is arresting alleged armed robbers hiding in the region.

“They are finding Eastern region a safe haven for hiding but we will persue them”, ASP Tetteh stated.

Collaboration

He urged the public to continue to support the police, especially with information to help them deal with criminals.

“What we need is more community police collaboration”, he added.

He however commended some members of the public for giving the police timely information which had led to the major arrests.

An Accra Circuit Court on Friday, remanded one Fataw Fuseini, a 25-year-old driver for possessing firearms and threatening one Suleiman Alhassan with a gun until March 8.

Fataw was remanded, even though his plea was not taken, because of the lack of a Dagbani interpreter at the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector, Kwabena Adu, told the court that the complainant, Suleiman, is a scrap dealer who lives at Agbogbloshie, whilst the accused is a driver from the same area.

He said on February 19, at about 12:45pm the complainant was at his work place around the Sikkens company at Agbogbloshie, when Fataw came to the yard with his tricycle full of rubbish to dump there.

He said the complainant told the accused not to dump the rubbish in the yard, since the elders of the yard had warned persons living in the area not to dump rubbish in and around the place.

The prosecution said Fataw became offended, left the tricycle in the yard, went to call five others, who are currently on the run, armed with a locally manufactured pistol and attacked the complainant.

The accused pulled a pistol from his pocket, but the complainant held his hand and with the assistance of the complainant’s brothers, the accused was overpowered and the pistol taken from him.

Mr Adu told the court that, a spot search conducted on Fataw revealed six ‘AAA’ live cartridges.

He was handed over to the Agbogbloshie Police, together with the pistol and the cartridges.

In the course of investigations, the case was transferred to Regional Criminal Investigation Department, Accra for further investigations.

Two accused persons who escaped from the Kwabenya Police station last month during an attack on the station have been jailed.

The two are to serve thirty months in prison after they pleaded guilty to the crime of escaping lawful custody and abetment to escape lawful custody before an Accra High Court on Tuesday.

[contextly_sidebar id=”WrxMQ5yxh2w7g0e4n1p87MC63trh5xqH”]The two, Prince Osei and Atta Kwadwo, were among the seven suspects who were assisted to escape police custody during the attack.

When they appeared before the court presided over by His Honour Aboagye Tandor two weeks ago, the two accepted guilty.

A third escapee who was also arrested, Kofi Darko, had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Meanwhile, the nine suspects accused of attacking the police station, have been also been charged.

The nine, which includes a woman, pleaded not guilty to the charge when they first appeared in court two weeks ago, and were subsequently remanded in police custody.

Background

A gang of suspected armed robbers attacked the Kwabenya District Police Headquarters, which accommodates the Kwabenya Police Station, killing the officer on duty, and freeing cell inmates.

A total of seven inmates were freed, but three of them have since been rearrested.

‘Cop killer busted’

Last Sunday, the Accra Police Command indicated that, it had picked up the man believed to have shot the police officer dead.

The suspect was identified as Kofi Seshie, aged 28.

Seshie was arrested along with four other suspects in the early hours of Saturday at Kasoa, according to a statement from the police.

The statement said these latest arrests bring the number of people detained following the incident to eleven, after six suspects were arrested earlier.

The police had announced a GHc15,000 bounty for any information leading to the arrest of the other four suspects who were freed from police custody by the robbers.

The now deceased Police officer sustained gunshot wounds, and died whilst receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.

He was the breadwinner for a family of seven with the youngest being three years.

‘No mercy’

Government has since condemned the attack on the Kwabenya District Police Headquarters.

Speaking at a press conference, Information Minister, Mustapha Hamid, assured that persons involved in the act will face the law.

“First of all government condemns the criminal conduct of these elements in the strongest possible terms. There is a manhunt for these criminal elements and we have no doubts in our minds that they will be brought to face justice.

“Government takes this opportunity to express its deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased policeman… While this is one of the isolated incidents that have unsettled the Ghanaian population, we wish to continue to assure the Ghanaian people that the security agencies are working to ensure the general safety of the population. The preventive mechanism of the Police Service remains intact which helps to nip such occurrences in the bud before they become full-blown criminal activities.”

The Ashanti Regional Police command is proposing the imposition of a curfew in Ahwiaa, a community in the Kwabre East district of the Ashanti Region as a security measure following violent clashes in the area on Saturday morning.

The Regional command, which was forced to deploy men as part of a joint police and military action to restore peace in the area wants the Regional Security Council to impose a dusk to dawn curfew in the town.

‘4 arrested after clashes’

The Police arrested four suspects in connection with the violence on Saturday.

Two of the suspects were in possession of a locally manufactured pistol each while the two others had machetes with them.

They are being kept in police custody to assist in further investigations.

What led to the clash?

Several properties including vehicles were vandalized on Saturday due to a fierce battle between two youth groups.

Residents in the community were forced to lock themselves indoors as a result of the situation.

Reports say the disturbances started when the Asante youth prevented their counterparts from the Zongo community from partaking in the burial celebrations of an 18-year old Esther Ampofowaa on Friday.

Addressing journalists after meeting with chiefs from both sides of the community, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Fred Anim said the police will find a lasting solution to the long-standing feud between the two factions.

He said the police anticipate casualties from the clashes, he said the police is still assessing the situation.

Calm has since returned to the area but the police have said they are monitoring the situation to ensure absolute calm prevails.

Nana Kwame Asare Junior, 24, has been sentenced to twenty-one months imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to four counts of defrauding by false pretenses at a Cape Coast Magistrate court.

Asare Junior, a self-acclaimed Evangelist is said to have defrauded Madam Susana Dadzie,a nurse and Veronica Mensah, a hairdresser of GH¢2,500.00 and GH¢2,200.00 respectively, under the pretext of securing admission for their wards at Premier Nursing Training School in Takoradi and Cape Coast Nursing Training School, but failed to do so.

He also defrauded Madam Rita Johnson, and Lucy Brown, both traders of GH¢3,710.00 and GH¢1,710.00 respectively under the pretext of providing a store at the new Kotokuraba market, and also getting Lucy’s son to undergo a stress-free interview at the US Embassy.

Pleading guilty to the charges, Asare Junior, also a CCTV camera installer pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy and said he was ready to pay the monies to the complainants.

The Court presided over by Ms Rita Amoaniwaa Edusah sentenced him to three months imprisonment on the first count, eight months on the second and third counts, and 12 months on the fourth count.

The court further ordered Asare Junior to pay all the monies before Friday May 11,2018.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector C. Hevi, told the court that Susana Dadzie in 2014 wanted admission into a nursing training school and Asare offered to help her get admission at the Premier Nursing Training School in Takoradi.

He said Asare collected GH¢2,500.00 from Susana under the pretext of going to pay her fees and went into hiding.

He said all efforts to trace him proved futile until he was spotted at the Bakaano Police cells in Cape Coast after his involvement in a similar case.

Chief Inspector Hevi said in 2015, Asare requested Veronica Mensah to pay an amount of GH¢2,200.00, and that he could secure admission for her daughter at the Cape Coast Nursing Training School.

He said after collecting the said amount, Asare went into hiding and all efforts to trace him also proved futile until arrest.

Prosecution again told the court that Rita Johnson and Lucy Brown used to visit Asare for spiritual help and prayers.

He said during the Month of November, Rita told Asare that she wanted a store at the newly constructed Kotokuraba market.

Asare offered to help her secure one and collected an amount of GH¢3,710.00 from Rita and went into hiding.

In the same month, Prosecution said Lucy’s son attended an interview at the US Embassy in Accra but was disqualified.

He said Asare upon hearing the news offered to help Lucy’s son and collected an amount of GH¢1,710.00 from her under the pretext of securing another interview for her son to travel outside the country.

Asare again went into hiding and refused to pick Lucy’s calls. Lucy then lodged a complaint with the Police which led to Asare’s arrest in his hideout at Atabandze.

Four policemen from the East Legon District Police Command arrested Haddad Rabih, around 11:45 pm on Sunday.

The suspect, Graphic Online gathered forcibly had sex with the victim around 5:00pm on Saturday in the absence of his wife and other occupants of his household, after subjecting her to severe beatings for resisting his demands.

The Commander of the East Legon District Command, Superintendent Cephas Arthur, told Graphic Online in an interview that investigations are ongoing.

He said the suspect would be processed for court after investigations.

The Ordeal

Narrating her ordeal to Graphic Online, after seeking medical care, the victim (name withheld), who speaks only Ewe and French, said the suspect beat her up mercilessly after she refused to respond to his demands for the second time.

He slapped her twice on the face, finally overpowered her and dragged her to his bedroom to rape her.

According to the victim who could barely turn her neck, she had been in the employment of the suspect from the month of November but was persistently harassed by him for sex anytime his wife was not at home.

The victim said Rabih threw her out of the room after raping her twice. She bled after the act.

Help

The victim said she sought help from some police officers on duty at a nearby house.

The police officers, she noted, apprehended the suspect and took him to the Airport Police Station but on reaching there, a policewoman on duty led the team back to the suspect’s home.

On reaching the house, the policewoman allegedly took GH¢350 being her [victim] salary for the month of November 2017, from the suspect and handed it over to her.

The victim said the policewoman stayed on until she had packed her belongings out of the suspect’s home.

Assistance

A good Samaritan directed the girl and her relatives to report the matter to the East Legon District Police Command a day after the incident.

The Police Command issued her with a medical report on Sunday to undergo medical examination.

Summon

Additional information gathered by Graphic Online indicates that, the Airport Divisional Police Command has summoned officers who were on duty on Saturday, December 2, 2017, for an emergency meeting to explain why the victim was not taken through standard protocol.

The victim’s father ,said he was home around 10: pm on Saturday when a policeman in the company of another woman dropped off the victim.
