Pupils of Poayangmire primary school in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region, are forced to sit on bare floor to learn, and this is just one of the school’s many infrastructural challenges.

They thus want government to swiftly provide them a conducive infrastructure for teaching and learning.

The Poayangmire community initiated  primary school is the only school serving the entire community.

The school only has two mud structures, a pavilion and a church for its pupils from Kindergarten to Primary six.

Primary three and four, as well as primary Five and Six, are housed in the school’s only two mud structures which the community built in 2008.

Unlike other privileged schools, primary three pupils have no choice than to leave the class and make way for pupils in primary four to have their lessons and vice versa.

This also applies to class five and six because of the limited infrastructure.

While Kindergarten pupils sit on the bare floor of the Church of Pentecost for their studies, Primary One and two sit under an opened pavilion with no walls and chalkboard.

Speaking to Citi News, some of the pupils lamented the effect of the situation on academic work, and called for government’s swift intervention.

“We don’t have classrooms, we are combined into only two classrooms. We don’t have textbooks especially English and no drinking water and all these are affecting our studies, we are appealing to the government to come and help us.”

The headteacher of the school, Akolbig Isaac, explained that, the unfavorable conditions do not only inconvenience both teachers and pupils, but also affects academic work adversely.

He called on government, non-governmental organizations and philanthropists to assist the school render quality education to the underprivileged pupils.

But  the District Chief Executive, for Binduri, Ayinga Bagre Yakubu, who could not fathom why his predecessor could not provide adequate infrastructure for the school since 2009, said his outfit was working to fix the problem.

“I am making some efforts and very soon the government will construct a new six-classroom unit block for the Poayangmire school before the end of 2017.”
