When you won the elections, my NDC friends warned me against believing that your presidency would be different. They said all politicians were the same while I argued that you’d be different because you’ve had years to reflect and plan for the presidency, and that there was no way you were going to squander the chance to write your name in the sands of time. They reiterated that other political scions had come to the presidency and wasted every chance to be great. I concluded, the doom-mongering was a consequence of their hurt at losing the election. Therefore, I had heard you speak and deduced that you cared about Ghana enough to be different.

No election has meant more to me than the election you won. The economy was in ruins, corruption soared under your predecessor, and I just wanted Ghana to be saved from the NDC. I was willing to lose friends who opted out of voting because “politicians were the same.” No one I know was under the illusion that an NPP administration would arrive and change Ghana immediately. We were, however hopeful that the decisions and behavior of your team members would be far superior to what was served by the NDC team. This faith isn’t based on the belief that no one wanted a repetition of the John Mahama level of inanity.

I have tried to restrain myself from writing about some of the shockingly bad decisions you’ve made in the last six short months. Given the mess you inherited, I was going to wait a year before commenting on your performance. But I sense that like any other relationship, we need to set standards, call your attention to the things we dislike before your bad habits become entrenched. Every sensible person does this in their relationships, you let the new people know what you can tolerate and how much.

Let’s begin with the most recent decision to mortgage the nation’s bauxite reserves for cash. Haven’t we done this mortgaging of our natural resources thing before? What did we get from all the gold, manganese, diamond and even the oil? Did you see the gold mining towns during the campaign? Is there anything in those areas that suggest the destruction of our environment was worth it?

What other new ideas beyond good speeches and selling of our natural resources did you and your team come into this government with? Since it is impossible to replicate the development models built on slavery, colonization and thievery, partnerships sound reasonable. But what exactly is special about this Chinese deal? What are we getting this time round that says the people living in the area will benefit?

It is almost surreal watching you folks make comical decisions like the NDC never left. Take the Minister of Education, Matthew Poku Prempeh’s decision to make the young actor, Abraham Attah, Ambassador of your Free Senior High School program. Of all the things to do and fix in education, his first symbolic act was this pointless one. Ghanaian children do not need an ambassador to tell them to go to school.

They need books and teachers who know their stuff to stay in class. They need classrooms and laboratories for an all-round education. They need to know they can complete the education and live in dignity in the country. They just need a scholarship system that works such that the poor have access.

It is shocking that NAPO’s joke of an appointment and the other useless ambassadorial appointments made by the Ghana Ambulance Service haven’t been revoked. Did you laugh and ponder like my colleagues, what could have possessed these men to make such  idiotic decisions? I’m so embarrassed for you, for these these decisions that undermine promise to change reflect badly on you. They also show that there is no grand plan for the change you promised. (I really hope I’m wrong about this because if it is, we’re doomed).

Take Dr, Mahamadu Bawumia’s announcement that your government will transport and feed all Haji pilgrims during your term in office. I understand why the government of Ghana must be involved in Haji, Saudi Arabia deals with governments on the pilgrimage. But this involvement should be limited to managing the quota system and other Saudi requirements.

We know pilgrims pay over $3000 to make this trip. If someone manages to raise this much, why should the government concern itself with their accommodation, transportation and feeding before the journey. The State doesn’t do much for our Muslim compatriots, but this feeding, transportation and the accepted provision of accommodation is an egregious waste of money.

Despite calls from Ghanaian Christians, the Christian Council and other groups, the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, is also organizing a pilgrimage to Israel. Mr. Kofi Dzamesi insists the ministry is just the liaison, and that no government funds will be expended here. Whose time and money will the committee working on this unproductive venture be wasting?

Time and money issues aside, what really boggles the mind why he is insistent on organizing this trip. And why you haven’t stopped this one too? Anyway, Sir, what exactly did you tell Mr. Dzamesi when you offered him this position? What is he expected to do as Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs? Pay the allowances of chiefs and plan trips? Do you see why some said some ministries were superfluous? A busy minister with real problems to solve won’t be out there defending such a facetious plan.

Mr. President, I’m not terrified that you will prove my NDC friends right, I’m just nervous that you and your people will spend the entire four years making ad hoc and useless decisions. I hate to bring this up, but here is an example of your own ad hocism which made me shook. Captain Mahama, a soldier, still in the employ of the Ghana Army is lynched and killed; and you decide to give his family GHC500, 000.

Did you and your team stop to ask the military about benefits for men and women who die on duty? Lynching has been going on for years, in that week Captain Mahama died, three other people died. How do you plan to help their families? Or it doesn’t hurt as much because they’re not related to powerful people?

Sir, these may seem minor, but they are bright indicators that nothing has changed and that the sea change you promised is not going to happen. Will we ever see the signs, and hopefully, that change?

The administration faced challenges in the education sector including strikes by a number of teacher unions in the country over unpaid salary arrears, issues pertaining to teacher recruitment, and the scrapping of some allowances enjoyed by teachers and teacher trainees.

[contextly_sidebar id=”3XGtXXa8DxlnQDcUC9r04MMtOCiTzD6d”]Speaking to Citi News, the Communications Director for the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), Ayiquaye Awule, indicated that the handling of the salary arrears was poor.

Mr. Awule said the concerns with the handling of salary arrears were compounded by the three-month salary arrears policy that was introduced by the outgoing National Democratic Congress government.

He explained that “instead of having their papers processed so that within three months they will receive their salaries, for some of them, it will take more than one year or two years and they have not received their salaries and government brought this policy that they should give you only three months’ salary arrears and it means the rest you have to justify why you should take that money.”

Mr. Awule also noted that teacher promotions were stalled and not accompanied by the required remuneration when effected.

“Our promotions are stagnating. Instead of five years, it will take you seven or eight years to be promoted. When you are promoted too, you will not be put on scale. I am a clear example of that one; promoted as far back as 2015, I receive the same old salary of 2015.”

GNAT scores gov’t 50 percent

Meanwhile, the Ghana National Association of Teachers, GNAT, scored the outgoing government’s handling of the education matters at 50 percent.

According to its General Secretary, David Ofori Acheampong, this is largely due to the performance of the Minister of Employment and Labour, Haruna Iddrisu.

“In terms of labour issues I will say yes and no. Yes and no because they had a very dynamic Minister for Labour and Employment. Haruna Iddrisu has done a good job. He is a good negotiator; he is an honest individual to deal with.”

With regards to the handling of labour disputes, he largely blamed the Finance Ministry.

“The problem we have had is that after we have done everything and the numbers have been validated and cleared for payment, we always had problems with the Ministry of Finance because they would have to issue out the instructions to the Controller and Accountant General to effect the payment.”

According to him, critics have no right to punch holes in his achievements over the past four years since he has performed creditably well.

“For the last four years, I know I have performed creditably well and if they will not praise, I know God is my witness in what I have done.”

President Mahama who was speaking at rallies at Jema and Techiman as part of his four-day campaign tour of the Brong Ahafo Region said: “God knows I have performed and will continue to guide me to win the December 7 polls this year.”

The President who was accompanied by First Lady Lordina Mahama, Mr Eric Opoku, Regional Minister, Alhaji Collins Dauda, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development said the electorate are now accustomed to the performance of the National Democratic Congress and would therefore return the party into power in December based on its performance.

“I have the track record of beginning my career as Member of Parliament, Deputy Minister, substantive Minister, Vice President and now President and what track record do they (Opposition Parties) have to challenge my competence.”

He appealed to party members to conduct their campaign programmes devoid of attacks and unprintable words for God to grant them another opportunity to lead Ghanaians from 2017.

“Our performance is currently being monitored by Ghanaians, and based on the high performance we are churning out, they will not hesitate to offer us another opportunity,” President Mahama added.

He said his second term of office would focus on job creation and agricultural transformation to better the lots of Ghanaians.

On the job creation, he said government would create a total of 400,000 jobs under the Youth Employment Agency to provide skills for youth with a monthly allowance of GH¢300.00 each.

He said the youth would be trained under different modules and GH¢50.00 out of their monthly allowance would be saved as seed money for two years and released to them when they complete their training programmes.

President Mahama said government would carry out a thorough transformation in the agricultural sector with the introduction of Farmers’ Centres, where tractors and other services would be provided for farmers to step up their activities.

He said credit facilities would also be provided to enhance agricultural development throughout the country.
