Former Gender Minister, Nana Oye Lithur, has backed the choice of Justice Sophia Akuffo as Ghana’s next Chief Justice.

According to Nana Oye Lithur, Justice Akuffo has the requisite experience and track record to deliver as the head of the country’s judiciary.

“You were strict, efficient, hardworking,no nonsense and compassionate as head of chambers. One of the few female senior lawyers heading a law firm in those days. You had left Mobil Ghana as their solicitor and set up the law firm Akuffo &Co.You groomed us all in your law firm to become sharp lawyers.Shiela Minkah Premo,Kwame Akuffo and I.We had to be excellent, professional in our approach, punctual to meetings and perfect!.”

The Facebook post from Oye Lithur is below

I remember in 1994/95 when I walked into your office and you told me that President Rawlings had nominated you as a Supreme Court Judge. In a reflective mood, you told me it was a call to serve Ghana. You had done so well as Chairperson of Civil Aviation Authority. The airport saw massive transformation under your leadership.Under your tenure you zoned and developed the Holiday Inn airport area, the airport saw a major expansion and you set up the Aviation Social Centre.

There was an uproar within the Ghana Bar Association about the President’s nomination .I distinctly remember the objection by the late ED Kom.You have proved them wrong.

You were strict, efficient, hardworking,no nonsense and compassionate as head of chambers. One of the few female senior lawyers heading a law firm in those days. You had left Mobil Ghana as their solicitor and set up the law firm Akuffo &Co.You groomed us all in your law firm to become sharp lawyers.Shiela Minkah Premo,Kwame Akuffo and I.We had to be excellent, professional in our approach, punctual to meetings and perfect!.

You excelled at the Supreme Court and African Human Rights Court.Justice Sophia Abena Boafoa Akuffo.Congratulations.I am proud of you.I am happy for you.More importantly Ghana has one of its finest legal brains as a Chief Justice nominee.May God chart your path so that justice will roll like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream in Ghana

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has finally confirmed the nomination of Sophia Akuffo, in consultation with the Council of State. Her nomination is however subject to parliamentary approval.

President Akufo-Addo stated that, he has known the Chief Justice for forty years, and can vouch for her ability and integrity to serve in that high office.

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), has signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), with Aarhus Social Health Care College of Denmark, to mainstream geriatrics into the health care delivery system in Ghana.

Geriatrics is the branch of medicine or social science dealing with the health and care of old people.

The MOU would also include financial and technical support for a trainer-of-trainers programme, to develop a geriatrics curriculum in Ghana’s nursing colleges and medical schools, beginning with the government nursing colleges.

[contextly_sidebar id=”0mjjFVRrzBKDEtcXB8WkV9Kn3l6RUvMP”]Nana Oye Lithur, Minister of MoGCSP, who announced this in Accra, said the Ministry is also deliberating on establishing Day Care Centres for the elderly where they will meet and socialize with other elderly people.

She said her Ministry has also organized free NHIS registration for the elderly across the country under its social protection programme.

The Ministry, she said, celebrated the National Senior Citizens Day with a health walk and health screening last year.

“The Ministry organized an end of year party in 2015 for the elderly in Cape Coast, where 800 elderly persons participated and awards were presented to distinguished “senior citizens”.

A Get-Together was also organized for 400 elderly persons at Bukom and 350 at Osu in Greater Accra Region. Others were also organised for elderly people from Keta, Ada, Shama, Ellembelle, South and North Tongu, Hohoe and Sekondi,” she added.

Speaking on programmes and interventions for the aged, she announced that Cabinet has approved the Aged Persons Bill and an Aged Advisory Council, has been established to steer affairs.

Nana Oye Lithur said Eban Elderly Welfare Card was launched in January 2015, to enable elderly persons to benefit from 50 per cent reductions in metro mass transportation fare, and grants them priority access in banks, hospitals, transportation and other public places.

She said so far, 25,000 Eban Elderly Welfare Cards have been issued in all the 10 regions.

The Minister announced that the nationwide roll-out of the Eban Card Project and the NHIS Registration for the Elderly would continue.

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has facilitated the enrollment of one thousand aged men and women in the Adansi district of the Ashanti region onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

This is to ensure the aged in the area receive much needed healthcare at little or no cost to them.

Speaking to Citi News at a Durbar for chiefs and people of New Edubiase, the sector minister, Nana Oye Lithur, said the ministry has so far enrolled about 20,000 aged people onto NHIS.

She said the ministry was embarking on a nationwide exercise to enroll more aged people onto the scheme through a collaboration with the local government and the NHIS.

‘Aged, prisoners registered on NHIS in UE/R’

The Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), earlier last year, commenced free registration of some eight hundred aged persons, and hundreds of prisoners’ in the Upper East Region onto the NHIS to enable them access free health care.
