The prime suspect in the killing of an old Vandal at the Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana, has been remanded in police custody to reappear before the court on January 9, 2018.

At the first court hearing on Tuesday, the Madina District Magistrate Court presided over by His Lordship, Richard Delali Anku, adjourned the case to give the police ample time to conclude their investigations.

[contextly_sidebar id=”hg6eDnli6dOydV5U6CFFl7zEEeA562DD”]The suspect, George Osei Mensah, is standing trial for allegedly killing Martin Tweneboah Kodua [Chief Tipsy], an Old Vandal, at Commonwealth Hall on Saturday, December 9. 2017.

A pathologist at the 37 Military Hospital is expected to conduct an autopsy on the deceased, and submit the report to the Police.

What happens next?

The Attorney General’s department will be furnished with the suspect’s statement, autopsy report and docket for advice.

The trial is expected to commence after the AG’s advice on the matter.

The suspect’s plea may be taken at the next hearing if the police concludes its investigations, and the autopsy report is ready with the AG’s advice sought on the matter.

The suspect faces a likely charge of manslaughter or murder.

The deceased Old Vandal, Martin Tweneboah Kodua

Background

The suspect is reported to have stabbed an Old Vandal, whose name was given as Nathaniel Tweneboah Koduah, alias Chief Tipsy multiple times on Saturday night, at the charging grounds of Commonwealth Hall at the University of Ghana.

The incident occurred after a heated argument between the two while they traveled back to campus from a funeral of an Old Vandal.

According to the Old Vandals Association, the two were separated on several occasions during their heated arguments on the bus.

“The argument became heated and the two had to be separated on several occasions by others. It went on and on. So, when we got to Atomic Junction, the driver was advised to stop and the two were thrown out of the bus. Others joined them.”

“When they got to the Hall, they had not stopped. It was at this time that the killer allegedly grabbed the knife of the khebab seller and cut the victim several times with it. The victim bled profusely and was rushed to the Legon Hospital by the killer and some Vandals… the doctors could not save his life. He was pronounced dead around 1900 hours GMT,” the Old Vandals’ statement said.

Meanwhile, the management of the University of Ghana has called for calm among parents and the general public following the incident, noting that “no threat has been identified which could cause any danger to our students in this respect.”

It further said the Careers and Counseling Centre of the school is on standby to counsel any student who may have been traumatized by the incident.

[contextly_sidebar id=”C6cGwT3vIlYwizFe45BtqW8SCweRktsw”]The situation, according to the Association, prompted the driver to kick the two men off the bus.

The statement added that “when they got to the Hall, they had not stopped. It was at this time that the killer allegedly grabbed the knife of the khebab seller and cut the victim several times with it. The victim bled profusely and was rushed to the Legon Hospital by the killer and some Vandals.”

OLD VANDAL STABBED TO DEATH BY AN INTRUDER

STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE OLD VANDALS ASSOCIATION

Fellow Vandals, I salute all of you.

I believe most of you have read or heard of the stabbing to death of an Old Vandal by a man who is believed to be an intruder.

The incident happened at about 1830 hours GMT on Saturday, 9 December 2017, at the “Charging Grounds” in the Commonwealth Hall.

It started as a mere argument between the two (the deceased and the killer) in the OVA bus on our way from Amrahia to campus (after attending the funeral of the late Vandal Lion). The argument became heated and the two had to be separated on several occasions by others. It went on and on. So, when we got to Atomic Junction, the driver was advised to stop and the two were thrown out of the bus. Others joined them.

When they got to the Hall, they had not stopped. It was at this time that the killer allegedly grabbed the knife of the khebab seller and cut the victim several times with it. The victim bled profusely and was rushed to the Legon Hospital by the killer and some Vandals.

The Doctors could not save his life. He was pronounced dead around 1900 hours GMT.

On behalf of the Vandal Fraternity, I extend heaps of condolences to the family of the deceased Old Vandal. May the Almighty Father comfort them in these trying times.

I urge all of us to remain calm. Let us continue to pray for our departed brother, Chief Tipsy.

The leadership will be meeting in the next few hours. We shall keep you posted.

Thank you.

Signed

An Old Vandal has been stabbed to death in a bloody fight with his colleague at the Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon.

The Saturday evening incident has shocked residents of the hall, who are yet to understand what triggered the heated argument that led to the fight in which broken bottles and a knife were used.

The deceased, who was only named as Chief Tipsy, according to campusgraphic.com, was rushed to the Legon Hospital but passed away shortly after.

The Legon Police reportedly thronged the Hall after a resident placed a call to them, and picked up the suspect, who is currently in their custody.

According to eyewitnesses’ account, the two were engaged in a heated argument after they returned from a programme outside the school.

Confirming the incident to citifmonline.com, Ato Brown, the University of Ghana chapter President of the Graduate Students of Ghana (GRASAG), said the information he received from Commonwealth Hall suggests that the deceased was not a student as had been reported earlier.

“The information we’ve gathered so far is that, they are old Vandals, and apparently they went for a funeral or a programme somewhere and they started with an argument and tempers flared up from the other person. So actually it was even the assailant who helped him [The deceased] to the hospital after stabbing him, and he is in the custody of the police for investigations. So they are not students and so there’s not so much cause for alarm even though we acknowledge them as old students”.

The suspect reportedly used broken bottles on the deceased, before he snatched a knife from a khebab seller, and stabbed him. A graphic video available to citifmonline.com shows blood all over the floor.

Some eyewitnesses believe that the suspect in particular, and maybe the victim as well, may have been under the influence of alcohol.

Legon Police were not immediately available for comment.

VANDAL is an acronym that describes the attributes of past, present and future students and residents of Commonwealth Hall, University of Ghana.
