The scholarship will supplement government’s newly launched Free Senior High School Education programme being enjoyed by the current first-year students in public second cycle institutions.

The Education and Skills Development Programme committee in the constituency received over 1000 applications, but 200 students from SHS Forms 2 and 3, Teacher and Nursing Training Colleges, Polytechnics and Universities sailed through the process to benefit from the scheme.

Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah advised the beneficiaries to live above reproach and stay focused to justify why they merited the scholarship.

“Through this initiative we hope to keep about 200 students every year in school starting from this year. To you who are beneficiaries don’t let me down, don’t let your parents down and don’t let the people of Ofoase-Ayirebi down,” Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah emphasised.

Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah expressed his gratitude to the District Assembly for its support in developing the constituency.

He noted that the collaboration between the local assembly and his office has also culminated in the provision of a mechanized borehole system with four tanks and a solar panel for residents of Akyem Akokoaso in the Ofoase-Ayirebi constituency.

“We are also in the process of facilitating the provision of over 3,000 electricity meters for many residents who were not captured in the first phase. 27 other communities will also receive electricity in the Electricity Extension Programme that will soon commence in the district,” the MP promised.

DCE hails Oppong- Nkrumah for his efforts

The District Chief Executive of the area,Paul Asamoah, hailed the MP for his dedication and fulfillment of his campaign promises, adding that the scholarship scheme “has taken away immense pressure” from him.

He assured the constituents the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government will deliver on its promises such as One Constituency One Million Dollars initiative, and One District One Factory Project.

Mr. Asamoah appealed to the government to help put up a hospital in the district since there is no major health facility to take care of emergencies.

“A district of 140,000 has no doctor. This is heart-wrenching. We are appealing to the government through the Ministry of Local Government to help us,” the DCE stressed.

Parents of beneficiaries express joy at the initiative

Parents of beneficiaries could not hide their joy, heaped praises on the MP for the timely intervention.

A parent said “I have been thinking of how to pay my son’s admission fees. I thank the MP for this gesture. It is very timely”.

Another parent explained that “ Most of us have been considering going for loans to enable us pay our children’s’ fees. The scholarship is a relief on my finances and that of several other households.

He gave the advice when he toured the Akyemansa District on Monday morning with the District Chief Executive of the area, Paul Asamoah, and the District Director of Education, Elizabeth Korkor Amanor, to offer words of encouragement to the candidates in the town.

He also offered useful tips on answering examination questions, saying “All the questions on that paper are things that you have been taught already. Just take your time, understand the questions and write out your answers clearly. Even where you do not have answers, take your time and think about it and you will find an answer.”

Sharing his own experience, Oppong Nkrumah said: “I have written exams from BECE through to law school to become a lawyer, and I have never failed in any of my examinations because I take my time to write. You just need to go through the questions thoroughly and think through the answers carefully before writing them out”, he added.

He congratulated students for overcoming the junior high school hurdle and completing their first papers, and assured that the Akufo-Addo administration’s Free SHS programme awaits them if they pass.

The 2017 BECE began with an overall student population of 1,204 students from 67 schools in the district writing in five examination centres.

Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, earlier donated 1,500 mathematical sets to be distributed to all final year students in junior high schools in his constituency.

He donated the items as part of his educational interventions, and the items are intended to aid candidates in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah encouraged the students to prepare adequately to pass the examination as it is a stepping stone for the next phase of their lives.

He also admonished students to restrain from examination malpractices and wished them success during the exam period.

Receiving the items on behalf of the students, the District Director of Education for Akyemansa district, Mrs. Elizabeth Korkor Amanor, expressed gratitude to the Member of Parliament for the gesture, even as they look forward to more of such support.

A total of 1,204 final year students across the Ofoase-Ayirebi constituency benefited from this donation. The examination is set to begin countrywide from Monday, the 5^th of June 2017.

WAEC statistics indicate that, with a total score of 600 being the maximum raw score in six subjects, 3,994 candidates got more than 500 in the 2016 BECE.

Addressing the zongo community at Ofoase, John Obiri Yeboah, who switched camp fromm the NPP after losing the primary to former broadcaster Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, disclosed that Dr. Nduom, the PPP Flagbearer, has promised the Ofoase-Ayirebi Constituency two factories for which he, Obiri will supplement with twoother  factories making it four in his first term as Member of Parliament.

“My father, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, has promised Ofoase Ayiribi Constituency two factories should you vote for me Obiri Yeboah. I am also adding two factories to the two making it four. We are promising real jobs for the unemployed youths here. So you see; we are offering more than what someone is promising”he said.

Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom on his part, asked the people of Ofoase to support Obiri Yeboah go to Parliament.

He noted that through Obiri Yeboah, he is already bringing community water and modern toilet facilities to the constituency.

“All I can say is that, the young man is eloquent and knows how to talk, he knows how to put your issues across so support him. Through him, communities here are benefitting from water projects and places of convenience, so imagine what he will achieve as a member of Parliament.”

On his part, the zongo chief, Saani Musah Abukari, commended John Obiri Yeboah for his foresight and vision to bring development to the people of Ofoase.

John Obiri Yeboah and Papa Kwesi Nduom were in Ofoase to pay a courtesy call on the Zongo chief, and to thank him  for his unflinching support for the PPP for the December 7 polls.
