The Mile 7 District Police have impounded four 20-footer containers suspected to contain tins of rotten mackerel imported into the country to be sold to unsuspecting members of the public.

The suspected rotten mackerel, with the brand name ‘Asahi,’ was allegedly imported by one Kofi Dokyi, owner of Dokyispo Ventures that deals in general merchandise.

The items were said to have been cleared on September 30 at the Tema Port to be sold on the Ghanaian market.

Residents of the area, who could not withstand the pungent stench, had to report the matter to the police.

A resident told DAILY GUIDE that the warehouse owned by Mr Dokyi and where the rotten mackerels were to be kept was used for storing only used cloths at Ofankor.

He said their attention was drawn to the situation on Tuesday, October 2, when the offensive stench started reverberating through the air in the area.

“When I went there to find out the source of the scent – since we know the owner of the warehouse deals in only used clothing – I saw some boys discharging the said goods into the warehouse and asked what they were,” the resident averred.

He said they later realized that it was mackerel imported for sale.

The country from which the product was imported was not immediately known.

He said when he checked the expiry date on the product, he realized that it would expire in 2018 but was already rotten “and so we reported the matter to the police.”

Another resident, Sylvester Aidoo, told DAILY GUIDE that if they did not report the matter to the police as concerned citizens, they feared the rotten mackerel would be rebranded and sold to unsuspecting individuals.

When the paper got to the scene, one of the containers had already been discharged into the warehouse, but the three other containers were intact.

In an interview with drivers of the vehicles, they claimed they did not know the owner.

The Mile 7 police patrol team later visited the scene to escort the vehicles to the station.

When contacted, ASP Efia Tenge, Accra Regional Public Relations Officer, said residents visited the station to give a report on the said rotten mackerel.

The owner of the product, she said, was later invited to the station to give his statement.

Meanwhile, she said efforts were being made by the police to get officials of the Food and Drug Authority (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to advise the police on what to do.

The owner has since been granted police enquiry bail while investigation continues.

The vehicles containing the goods have also been impounded.

The planned demonstration, by the chiefs and the youth of Asogli State in the Volta Region, has been suspended.

The youth of the area had, with support from the traditional rulers, threatened to embark on a demonstration today due to what they say is the lack of development in the region.

Citi News’ reporter in the Volta Region, Akpablie-King Norbert, reported that the decision was taken after a meeting between the sub-chiefs and the paramount chief of the area, Togbui Afede, and government officials.

The chiefs had earlier threatened to embark on a demonstration with their subjects on Wednesday in Ho, if they did not see visible signs of government’s commitment to address their development needs.

Citi News reports have revealed that the government officials had pleaded with the chiefs to call off the demonstration, asking to be given a month to address the concerns of the people.

A few residents of the area, who spoke to Citi News, stated that they were not pleased with the news that the demonstration had been called off.

They added that they would hit the streets if they don’t see any improvement in their situation soon.

The Chiefs of the Asogli Traditional area in the Volta Region are threatening to embark on a demonstration with their subjects on Wednesday in Ho if they do not see visible signs of government’s commitment to address their development needs.

According to the chiefs, they feel neglected and that the government is taking them for granted.

Speaking on behalf of the the Asogli state Chief of Ho, Heve Togbui Anipki said, “come Wednesday the demonstration is coming on if they do not see any sign that work has resumed on the Ho-Adidome-Sogakope roads.’’

‘’Are we not part of the country or is it because the region is considered as ‘World Bank’ [during elections] that come what may whether our needs are catered for or not you are sure of our votes and therefore no serious attention is given to our development projects…,’’ he noted.

The chiefs made this known to President John Mahama when they hosted him as part of a one day inspection tour of the Adidome to Ho road.

The chiefs also listed a litany of development challenges including roads, potable water amongst others as their frustration which is leading them to embark on the demonstration.

They further cited frustrations of commuters who ply the Ho and Accra route after the closure of the Adomi Bridge and called for urgent interventions to ensure that economic activities in the Volta region do not come to a halt.

On his part President John Mahama assured the people of the Volta Region that his administration would never take them for granted.

“I am very pleased that I came here today and I am very appreciative of your frankness in talking about your  frustration; It doesn’t anger me, it rather lets me understand that there is more that we should do…,’’ he said.

According to him the NDC administration would ensure that they get their fair share of national development.

“Let me assure the people of Volta Region that you have never been taken for granted and I will never take you for granted,’’ the President added.

President Mahama explained that government is undertaking a lot of developments. He noted that the complaints about roads are not restricted only to the Volta region.

“Everywhere I have gone; in all the ten regions, the complaints have been the same about roads,’’ President Mahama stated.

Meanwhile work is progressing on the Adidome to Ho road as President Mahama promises to ensure that funds are released on time to ensure completion.

The road serves as an alternative route to the Volta Regional capital.

The Deputy  Regional TB and HIV and AIDS Coordinator , Mr Eric Quaye Appiah, gave the statistics at a day’s refresher training course in Ho at the weekend for 32 TB Community Volunteers and Leaders drawn from the Adaklu District.
