A civil society group committed to the tenets of the United Nation, Ghana United Nations Association (GUNA), on Friday joined students of the Odorgonno Senior High School in Accra to celebrate the 2017 World Science Day for Peace and Development.

The day, whic is marked every November 10, is aimed at highlighting the important role of science in society.

Mr Chris Pardi, Secretary General-GUNA

Speaking at the event, the Secretary General of GUNA, Mr. Chris Pardie, explained that Odorgonno SHS was chosen to mark the day because of the successes chalked in the field of science having come first in the National Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) competition organized by the forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), and placing fourth out of 25 schools at the African level.

He underscored the need for more to be done to boost the interest of the youth in scientific research.

Programmes Director of GUNA, Bishop Nat Rudolph, also at the event proposed a new Innovative Science (InoScience) Challenge to replace the National Science and Maths quiz program for 2nd cycle institutions.

This, he argued will help students develop solutions to teething national problems facing the country such as waste management, flooding, child delinquencies among others.

Mr Charles Nkrumah, Youth Affairs presiden-GUNA

“We strongly believe that this new program if adopted and funded by government and corporate organizations, will develop and unleash the scientific prowess of our students to be more useful to society and themselves,” he added.

The headmistress of Odorgonno SHS, Dr. Mrs. Shine Ofori, on her part appealed for the establishment of a functional science laboratory for the school to enhance the study of science.

The school’s science laboratory according to her, is outdated and had developed cracks, and has been abandoned as a result.

She lamented that the school now uses classrooms for its science practical lessons, moving science equipment every now and then.

Speaking to Citi News, the Greater Accra Regional NADMO Director, Cobbina Archibald bemoaned the rate of indiscipline in some Senior High School within the region.

“I think this is so pathetic and this brings to bare the vulnerability of our schools, I can say that a lot of the schools within Greater Accra and elsewhere are not properly walled and most of the time you will find encroachers all around the school. You can see it’s a deliberate attempt by somebody to burn the dormitory,” he added.
