A 44-year-old trader, Mawuena Paku, has been stabbed to death by an unknown assailant in the Obuasi Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

According to police, Mrs. Paku was returning from the market when she was stabbed around the Sam Jonah quarters at about 7:45 pm on Wednesday.

The assailant made away with her handbag containing an unspecified amount of money and a mobile phone.

She was pronounced dead upon arrival at the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) hospital.

Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Juliana Obeng, who confirmed the incident to Citi News, said the deceased’s husband made the report to the police

She added that police had gathered evidence from the scene but so far no arrest has been made.

“A report was made yesterday by a 45-year-old man by name Mr. Paku in the evening at the Obuasi Central Police Station to the effect that his wife, who is now deceased, Mrs. Mawuena Paku, 44 years, had been stabbed by an unknown person. He mentioned that his wife had closed from the market and was about opening their front gate to enter their house when an unknown person stabbed her from the back with a sharp object and snatched her bag which contained an unspecified amount of money and a mobile phone,” she narrated.

“Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead on arrival at the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital. The body has been deposited at the morgue. The scene has been visited (by the police) but no arrests have been made.”

‘Poor lighting’

According to Juliana Obeng, the area where the incident occurred is poorly lit, secluded and has terrible access roads.

“From the reports I’m gathering from the team that visited the scene, the indication is that the place is a secluded area that has no lighting with very bad roads. I understand that it is an Estate that has been rejected by AGC Ashanti Goldfields Company so it’s more like one person staying in a very big apartment. You’d have to move for about ten to fifteen minutes in the dark before you can locate another apartment where someone else is living,” she added.

This attack is the latest in a series on unsuspecting Ghanaians and companies in recent months.

Mobile money vendors and forex bureaux appear to be most the targeted in the recent operations.

On Tuesday, there were two robbery attacks in the North Kaneshie area which left some persons injured.

A Lebanese businessman was on Wednesday shot and killed by a group of armed robbers in broad daylight at the Tema Industrial Area after he withdrew some amount of money from a bank. The robbers made away with GH¢200,000 in that operation.

There have also been a number of robbery attacks in some parts of Accra and Koforidua in recent days.

Police shake-up

These incidents have prompted members of the public and the Minority to call for some of the heads of the security agencies, including the Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Apeatu, to be sacked.

The IGP has responded with a major reshuffle in the Service, with several officers given new assignments.

Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Director General of Police Operations, has been reassigned to head the Research and Planning Department.

He is to be replaced immediately by the Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Simon Afeku.

Nine others have also been reassigned to take up various positions across the country.

The Information Services Department (ISD) in the Obuasi district in collaboration with Anglogold Ashanti has successfully organized a series of programmes to mark this year’s edition of World Sickle Cell Day in Obuasi.

The programme which took place between Monday, 19th June and Friday, 23rd June, 2017 was under the theme: “Know your sickle cell status now” included a walk through the principal streets of Obuasi ,  a free health screening which included sickling test at the Obuasi Central mosque.

Commenting on the rationale behind the programme, the Municipal Information Officer for the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, Mr. Sampson Manu said statistics from the Obuasi Health Directorate points to the fact that between 2015 and 2016, a total of 436 and 936 people respectively reported the disease in the Municipality.

The figure he said represented more than 100% surge.

This, he said, coupled with low public education called for the intervention of ISD, obuasi office.

With funds mainly through sponsorship from corporate institutions such as Anglogold Ashanti, Ghana Revenue Authority – Obuasi, Ghana Commercial Bank, Cofkans Hotel, Dr. Patrick Boakye Yiadom, Member of Parliament for the Obuasi East constituency, Medilab Diagnostic Services and the support of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, more than 100 people benefited from the free screening exercise which was the first of its kind in the Municipality.

A Community Relations Officer of Anglogold Ashanti, Edmund Oduro Agyei also noted that AGA partnered ISD, obuasi to organize the sickle cell programme because the mining company prioritizes health issues in the Municipality.

Sickle cell is a group of disorders that affects hemoglobin, the molecule in the red blood cell that delivers oxygen to cells throughout the body. The signs and symptoms of sickle cell disease usually begin in early childhood and it includes repeated infection and periodic episodes of pain.

It is estimated that about 2% of newly born babies in Ghana are affected by the disease whilst over 95% of children born with the disease in Africa die before the age of 5 years.

The miners were said to have also defaced paraphernalia of the Progressive People’s Party, NPP and NDC in the area.

The aggrieved miners are said to have taken the action during a demonstration exercise in a bid to resist their relocation and takeover of some mining concessions in the area by Anglogold Ashanti.

A local reporter told Citi News that the miners demonstrated in the area on Tuesday but were called to order by the Ashanti Regional Minister.

“A section of them were in cars following the regional minister chanting ‘no galamsey no vote’ and the Regional Minister had to talk to them and they went to their various homes. But today, we saw them back in town chanting the same ‘no galamsey no vote’.”

The reporter said the miners went through the Obuasi township “defacing all political party paraphernalia and posters.”

“They did it to the NDC, NPP, PPP among others. So they went to Tutuka, where the NDC Obuasi East office is and they destroyed the door, windows, plastic chairs and came down to Obuasi Central, where the office of the NPP is. They broke the glasses, doors, brought down the Nana Addo and Kwaku Kwarteng banner just in front of the party. They also did the same thing to the PPP’s Obuasi East candidate billboard. About four other billboards of his were his were brought down,” Agyenim added.

The reporter noted that the Police could not stop the illegal miners.

Leave AngloGold’s Obuasi site

The Minerals Commission had earlier warned the illegal miners still occupying the Obuasi concession, of AngloGold Ashanti, to evacuate the site or suffer ejection.

This comes on the back of the insistence of some of the informal miners not to relocate to the new site allocated by the Commission.
