Former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle are in talks to produce shows for Netflix, according to the New York Times.

The couple would make exclusive content for the US streaming site focused on uplifting stories, the paper suggested.

If confirmed, the deal would give a global platform for the Obamas, bypassing mainstream US media such as Fox News.

Netflix told the BBC it had no comment to make about the reports.

‘Inspire’

Eric Schultz, a senior adviser to the former president, did not confirm the plans but said they would make sense.

“President and Mrs Obama have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire,” he told the paper.

“Throughout their lives, they have lifted up stories of people whose efforts to make a difference are quietly changing the world for the better. As they consider their future personal plans, they continue to explore new ways to help others tell and share their stories.”

The New York Times said one possible show idea was for Mr Obama to moderate debates on issues such as health care, climate change and immigration- all of which dominated his eight years in the White House.

But the paper said there were no plans to use the shows to attack conservative critics or Donald Trump.

The streaming service’s mix of original drama, films and other programming has proved popular globally, with subscriber numbers reaching nearly 118 million at the end of 2017.

And it has been investing heavily in content as it tries to grow that subscriber base – with hit shows such as Stranger Things and Black Mirror as well as films and documentaries.

It is unclear how much the Obamas will be paid if a deal is struck.

Mr Obama already connects directly to an audience through social media. He has has more than 100 million twitter followers and his Facebook page has been liked by 55 million users.

Barack Obama has congratulated Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their engagement while the current US President Donald Trump has remained silent.

The former US president, who has forged a burgeoning friendship with the prince in recent years, wished the newly engaged couple a “lifetime of joy and happiness” together.

Prince Harry’s engagement to Markle, who rose to fame for playing ambitious paralegal on popular US show Suits, was announced on Monday. The couple will marry next spring and live at Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace in London.

“Michelle and I are delighted to congratulate Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their engagement,” Obama said on Twitter. “We wish you a lifetime of joy and happiness together.”

President Trump has yet to comment on the news despite the fact Markle is set to become the first American to be bequeathed with the title of Her Royal Highness (HRH).

Markle is the first American to become engaged to a British royal since Edward VIII – one of the shortest reigning monarchs in British history who proposed to American socialite Wallis Simpson.

The engagement prompted a constitutional crisis and officials opposed the marriage because Wallis was divorced. After it became clear it would be impossible for him to marry the socialite and remain on the throne he abdicated in 1936. He married Simpson in France in June 1937 and although she became the Duchess of Windsor she was never given the title of HRH.

Instead of congratulating Prince Harry and Markle, President Trump, whom Markle has been a vocal critic of, spent the day venting his frustrations about US networks that he accused of falsifying news reports about him.

The world leader tweeted: “We should have a contest as to which of the Networks, plus CNN and not including Fox, is the most dishonest, corrupt and/or distorted in its political coverage of your favourite President (me). They are all bad. Winner to receive the FAKE NEWS TROPHY!”

Disparaging comments Markle made about Mr Trump are expected to receive renewed attention in the wake of their engagement. While members of the royal family are of course forced to remain impartial due to age-old protocol, in a 2016 interview – long before she was engaged to Prince Harry – the humanitarian and gender equality campaigner called the president a divisive misogynist.

“Yes of course Trump is divisive. Think about just female voters alone,” the 36-year-old actor said on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore. “I think it was in 2012, the Republican Party lost the female vote by 12 points. That’s a huge number and with as misogynistic as Trump is and so vocal about it, that’s a huge chunk of it.”

“You’re not just voting for a woman if it’s Hillary because she’s a woman, but certainly because Trump has made it easy to see that you don’t really want that kind of world that he’s painting.”

While it is considered unlikely President Trump will be invited to the royal wedding – which has yet to have a date or venue fixed – the Obamas are expected to be bestowed with a coveted invitation.

The 33-year-old prince, who is fifth in line to the throne, and Obama have become friends over the years. Last month, they surprised onlookers after they appeared in the wheelchair basketball arena at the Invictus Games together. In May, they met at Kensington Palace where they discussed mental health and the Manchester bombing which had taken place just days before.

Prince Harry has also fostered a friendship with Michelle Obama – the pair teamed up for a surprise visit to a school in Chicago’s South Side which is a stone’s throw from the soon to be Obama Presidential Centre earlier this month.

Prince Harry has reportedly been critical of President Trump in private. In February, a source who is said to be close to the royal told US Weekly, the Prince “is not a fan” of the former reality TV star. They also said: “Harry thinks the president is a serious threat to human rights”.

A second source claimed the royal has “often been vocal” about his feelings towards Mr Trump since the Republican announced his presidential bid in 2015.

A palace spokesperson declined to comment on the matter to The Independent at the time, saying: “By long-standing convention, we never comment on reports from unnamed sources of purported private conversations involving members of the royal family.”

In a statement on Monday, Prince Harry said he was ”delighted to announce“ the engagement and had gained the blessing of Markle’s parents.

“His Royal Highness and Ms Markle became engaged in London earlier this month. Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms Markle’s parents,” read a statement from Clarence House.

Former US president Barack Obama has been summoned for jury duty in the state of Illinois and is planning to serve, a court official says.

Details have not been released but he is expected to appear in Cook County next month.

Mr Obama, 56, owns a home in Washington DC and also in Chicago and could be called for civil or criminal cases.

Ex-presidents Bill Clinton and George W Bush also appeared for jury selection after leaving the White House.

Barack Obama went to Harvard Law School and lectured at the University of Chicago’s law school for 12 years before he joined the Senate. He also worked as a civil rights lawyer.

“He made it crystal-clear to me through his representative that he would carry out his public duty as a citizen and resident of this community,” Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans was quoted by the Chicago Tribune as saying.

Mr Evans said that the former president’s security was a priority. A spokesman for Mr Obama has not commented.

Jurors in the county get paid $17.25 (£13) for each day served.

If chosen, Mr Obama would not be the first high-profile person to appear on a jury in Cook County – celebrity Oprah Winfrey sat on a jury for a murder trial in 2004, NPR reports.

During his final moments in the Oval Office, President Barack Obama folded into thirds a handwritten letter to Donald Trump, slid it into an envelope, and in neat capital letters addressed it to “Mr. President.”

Now, the contents of that letter — the last direct communication between the 44th and 45th presidents — have emerged for the first time after CNN obtained a copy.

Dear Mr. President –

Congratulations on a remarkable run. Millions have placed their hopes in you, and all of us, regardless of party, should hope for expanded prosperity and security during your tenure.

This is a unique office, without a clear blueprint for success, so I don’t know that any advice from me will be particularly helpful. Still, let me offer a few reflections from the past 8 years.

First, we’ve both been blessed, in different ways, with great good fortune. Not everyone is so lucky. It’s up to us to do everything we can (to) build more ladders of success for every child and family that’s willing to work hard.

Second, American leadership in this world really is indispensable. It’s up to us, through action and example, to sustain the international order that’s expanded steadily since the end of the Cold War, and upon which our own wealth and safety depend.

Third, we are just temporary occupants of this office. That makes us guardians of those democratic institutions and traditions — like rule of law, separation of powers, equal protection and civil liberties — that our forebears fought and bled for. Regardless of the push and pull of daily politics, it’s up to us to leave those instruments of our democracy at least as strong as we found them.

And finally, take time, in the rush of events and responsibilities, for friends and family. They’ll get you through the inevitable rough patches.

Michelle and I wish you and Melania the very best as you embark on this great adventure, and know that we stand ready to help in any ways which we can.

Four pieces of advice

The words reveal a conciliatory outgoing commander in chief with four items of advice for his successor, whose fitness for the job he’d spent the previous months openly questioning.

“Congratulations on a remarkable run,” Obama wrote in his opening line. “Millions have placed their hopes in you, and all of us, regardless of party, should hope for expanded prosperity and security during your tenure.”

Written out longhand on White House stationery and slipped into the top drawer of the Resolute Desk, the 275-word letter captures an outgoing president eager to instill in Trump the vast responsibilities and uncertain parameters of the job.

Obama, when writing the letter, didn’t disclose the content even to his closest aides. Since then, however, Trump has shown the letter to visitors in the Oval Office or his private White House residence. CNN obtained a copy from someone Trump showed it to.

“This is a unique office, without a clear blueprint for success, so I don’t know that any advice from me will be particularly helpful,” Obama wrote. “Still, let me offer a few reflections from the past 8 years.”

Obama reminds Trump, a billionaire businessman, that they’ve both been “blessed, in different ways, with great good fortune.”

“Not everyone is so lucky,” Obama said. “It’s up to us to do everything we can (to) build more ladders of success for every child and family that’s willing to work hard.”

He advises Trump that American leadership is “indispensable” and encourages him “through action and example” to sustain post-Cold War international order.

And he offers a warning against eroding the tenets of democracy in the name of political gain.

“We are just temporary occupants of this office,” Obama wrote. “That makes us guardians of those democratic institutions and traditions — like rule of law, separation of powers, equal protection and civil liberties — that our forebears fought and bled for.”

“Regardless of the push and pull of daily politics, it’s up to us to leave those instruments of our democracy at least as strong as we found them,” he said.

That passage, read seven months after Trump took office, appears prescient. Trump has been accused of flouting rule of law in his broadsides against federal judges and his own attorney general. His verbal assaults on Congress have led to charges that he’s disregarding the constitutionally enshrined separate but equal branches of government.

Trump, however, is said to cherish Obama’s missive. Upon reading it on Inauguration Day, he attempted to place a phone call to the former president expressing his gratitude, according to both a current White House official and a former Obama aide. His predecessor was traveling west to California with his family, and couldn’t take the call.

When one of Obama’s aides reached back out to the White House to return the call, the new president’s staffers said Trump just wanted to say thank you for the note — and wanted Obama to get the message. The men never connected directly.

“It was long. It was complex. It was thoughtful,” Trump said of the letter the week after taking office in an interview with ABC News. “And it took time to do it, and I appreciated it.”

During the interview, Trump showed the news crew the letter, pulling it from its envelope. He wouldn’t read it out loud.

In writing Trump the letter, Obama was continuing a long tradition set by past presidents. He received his own handwritten note from George W. Bush on the day of his inauguration counseling him of uncertain days ahead.

“There will be trying moments. The critics will rage. Your ‘friends’ will disappoint you,” Bush wrote. “But, you will have an Almighty God to comfort you, a family who loves you, and a country that is pulling for you, including me.”

Eight years earlier, Bill Clinton offered an optimistic view of the job.

“The burdens you now shoulder are great but often exaggerated,” he wrote Bush in 2000. “The sheer joy of doing what you believe is right is inexpressible.”

And in 1992, George H.W. Bush wrote Clinton that “your success now is our country’s success.”

“I am rooting hard for you,” he concluded. “Good luck.”

Obama’s letter is nearly twice as long as his predecessors’ and includes more specific pieces of advice. But like Clinton and both Bushes, he offers a view of the job that accounts both for its thrill but also its ability to humble.

“Take time, in the rush of events and responsibilities, for friends and family,” Obama wrote. “They’ll get you through the inevitable rough patches.”

Since reading the letter for the first time, Trump hasn’t spoken or seen Obama. Instead he’s frequently criticized the former president, rolled back significant elements of Obama’s agenda, and privately obsessed about comparisons between himself and the man he replaced.

Obama, meanwhile, has weighed in selectively on Trump since leaving office. He criticized decisions to withdraw from the Paris climate accord and repeal Obamacare, but did not directly address Trump’s equivocal comments about white supremacists in Virginia, even as others reacted with withering criticism.

Before all that, however, Obama wrote that he was willing to remain in touch.

“Michelle and I wish you and Melania the very best as you embark on this great adventure, and know that we stand ready to help in any ways which we can,” he wrote in his sign-off.

“Good luck and Godspeed.”

It may be President Trump’s communication tool of choice – but it’s a tweet by former President Barack Obama that has become the most liked in Twitter’s history.

The tweet, the first in a series of three, quoted Nelson Mandela and was accompanied by a picture of Mr Obama smiling with a group of children from different racial backgrounds.

It has been liked almost three million times since it was posted on 13 August following the attack in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The milestone was reached at approximately 01:07 GMT, Twitter told the BBC.

It overtook a tweet posted by Ariana Grande expressing condolences after the Manchester terror attack in May.

‘Taught to love’

Over three tweets, Mr Obama quoted a passage from Mr Mandela’s autobiography, The Long Walk To Freedom.

“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin or his background or his religion,” the quote reads.

“People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” than its opposite.”

The picture shows Mr Obama in 2011 visiting a day care centre in Bethesda, Maryland.

It was taken by the then-White House photographer, Pete Souza.

Since President’s Trump election win, Mr Souza has been posting topical images on Instagram, mostly highlighting Mr Obama’s approach to the presidency in comparison to his successor.

US House Republicans have unveiled a long-awaited plan to replace the signature health care law of former US President Barack Obama.

The proposed legislation would repeal penalties for those who do not buy health insurance.

It would also replace income-based subsidies to help with the cost of premiums with age-based tax credits.

Democrats immediately criticised the plan, saying it would drive up the costs of health care.

The Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, helped 20m previously uninsured Americans get health insurance.

However, increases in insurance premiums have irked many Americans.

The plan from Republicans in the US House of Representatives would reduce the role of the federal government in helping Americans afford healthcare.

“Today marks an important step toward restoring health care choices and affordability back to the American people,” the White House said in a statement.

President Donald Trump looked forward to working with Congress to repeal and replace the law, it said.

The president has described Obamacare, which was passed in 2010 and is seen as Mr Obama’s signature domestic policy achievement, as “a disaster”.

The Republican Party has majorities in both chambers of Congress but divisions remain on the details of what should replace the Affordable Care Act, which is popular in many states, including some governed by Republicans.

The plan is expected to cover fewer people than those who gained insurance under Mr Obama.

A group of four Republican senators have already said that a draft of the legislation they reviewed did not adequately protect low-income people who received Medicaid coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

The proposal unveiled on Monday would preserve some popular elements of the existing law, including allowing young people to remain on their parents’ insurance plans until the age of 26.

Insurers would also remain banned from denying coverage to those with pre-existing conditions.

‘Obamacare-lite’

While penalties for those who don’t buy health insurance would be scrapped, those who let their coverage lapse could see their premiums raised by 30% by insurers.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said the bill would “drive down costs, encourage competition, and give every American access to quality, affordable health insurance”.

He said no one would have “the rug pulled out from under them”.

But some conservatives have already voiced concerns that the bill does not go far enough.

“It still looks like Obamacare-lite to me,” said Senator Rand Paul.

On the Democratic side, US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the plan would “force Americans to pay more, all so insurance companies can pad their bottom line”.

He also criticised measures that would block for one year federal funding to Planned Parenthood, an organisation opposed by many in the Republican Party because it provides abortions.

The director of national intelligence at the time of the US election has denied there was any wire-tapping of Donald Trump or his campaign.

James Clapper also told NBC that he knew of no court order to allow monitoring of Trump Tower in New York.

Mr Trump had accused President Barack Obama of ordering the wire-tap, but offered no evidence.

Mr Trump says an inquiry into alleged Russian interference should also probe potential abuse of executive power.

James Clapper, who left his post when Mr Trump took office on 20 January, told NBC’s Meet the Press: “There was no such wire-tap activity mounted against the president-elect at the time, as a candidate, or against his campaign.”

He said that as intelligence director he would have known about any “court order on something like this. Absolutely, I can deny it”.

But he added: “I can’t speak for other authorised entities in the government or a state or local entity.”

Some media reports had suggested the FBI had sought a warrant from the foreign intelligence surveillance court (Fisa) in order to monitor members of the Trump team suspected of irregular contacts with Russian officials.

Mr Clapper’s comments appear to contradict the reports, which said that a warrant was at first turned down, but then approved in October.

Under Fisa, wire-tapping can only be approved if there is probable cause to believe that the target of the surveillance is an agent of a foreign power. Mr Obama could not lawfully have ordered such a warrant.

‘Simply false’

In his interview, Mr Clapper also said that no evidence had been found of collusion between the Trump team and the Russian government.

Mr Trump, who has faced intense scrutiny over alleged Russian interference in support of his presidential bid, made his wire-tapping allegation in tweets written from his weekend home in Florida early on Saturday.

He called the alleged tapping “Nixon/Watergate”, referring to the notorious political scandal of 1972, which led to the downfall of President Richard Nixon.

His claims sparked Republican and Democrat politicians alike to demand details to back them up. Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio was the latest, saying on Sunday that “the White House will have to answer as to exactly what he was referring to”.

What are the Congressional committees looking at?

Both the House and Senate intelligence committees are currently looking into the possibility of Russian interference during the 2016 election, both launched in January.

They have promised wide-ranging investigations, carried out on a bipartisan basis, which will not shy away from looking into potential links between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin, as well as Russian “cyber activity”.

Meanwhile, the Senate Armed Services Committee is going to look at how to protect the US from cyber-attacks in the wake of the election.

But in his series of tweets on Sunday, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer did not provide any further evidence.

He said: “Reports concerning potentially politically motivated investigations immediately ahead of the 2016 election are very troubling.

“President Trump is requesting that as part of their investigation into Russian activity, the congressional intelligence committees exercise their oversight authority to determine whether executive branch investigative powers were abused in 2016.”

He added: “Neither the White House nor the President will comment further until such oversight is conducted.”

White House deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told ABC News that if Mr Trump’s allegations were true, “this is the greatest overreach and the greatest abuse of power that I think we’ve ever seen and a huge attack on democracy itself”.

Mr Trump’s tweets followed allegations made by conservative radio host Mark Levin, including that the Obama administration “sought, and eventually obtained, authorisation to eavesdrop” on the Trump campaign last year.

Mr Obama’s spokesman, Kevin Lewis, said the accusation was “simply false”.

A “cardinal rule of the Obama Administration was that no White House official ever interfered with any independent investigation led by the Department of Justice”, he said.

That statement left open the possibility that a judicial investigation had been taking place.

Some Democrats have suggested Mr Trump’s allegations were an attempt to focus attention away from the Russian affair.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said: “The Deflector-in-Chief is at it again.”

Former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle have agreed a book deal with Penguin Random House.

“The company has acquired world publication rights for two books, to be written by President and Mrs Obama respectively,” the publisher said.

Titles and other details have not been disclosed but the deal is believed to be worth tens of millions of dollars.

Mr Obama is the author of Dreams from My Father and The Audacity of Hope bestsellers.

Mrs Obama has written American Grown – a book about food and gardening.

“With their words and their leadership, they changed the world, and every day, with the books we publish at Penguin Random House, we strive to do the same,” Penguin Random House CEO Markus Dohle said.

“Now, we are very much looking forward to working together with President and Mrs Obama to make each of their books global publishing events of unprecedented scope and significance.”

US President Donald Trump has said he believes Barack Obama is behind the protests against Republican lawmakers, and national security leaks.

He told Fox News: “I think President Obama’s behind it because his people are certainly behind it”, but added: “I also think it’s just politics”.

Mr Trump offered no evidence for his claims; his predecessor in the White House has not commented.
Mr Trump also spoke about his budget plans and other issues.

President Trump’s interview was broadcast hours before he is due to give his first address to a joint session of Congress in which he is expected to set out in greater detail his plans to cut spending and boost the economy.

He was asked about the protests faced by some Republican politicians at town hall meetings across the country and not, as our earlier story said, protests about his travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries.

He said he was certain Obama loyalists were behind both those protests and White House leaks. “In terms of him being behind things, that’s politics. And it will probably continue,” he added.

He was asked for more detail on how he would find the money for the 10% increase in military spending he has proposed for 2018. Proposed cuts elsewhere are unlikely to cover the proposed increase.

Mr Trump said he would get “more product for our buck” in terms of buying military hardware and would ask for a “form of reimbursement” from countries making use of the US military.

But he said his overall aim was to grow the economy.
“We were probably GDP of little more than 1% and if I can get that up to three or maybe more, we have a whole different ball game,” he told the programme.

Despite Mr Trump’s claim, US government figures show that GDP growth was 3.5% in the third quarter of 2016 and 1.9% in the fourth quarter.

Keeping both of his campaign promises – boosting the military and protecting welfare – will put the president in a tough bind.

If he wants to boost the defence budget by $54bn without adding to the deficit, that money will have to come from somewhere – and mandatory spending on welfare and debt interest takes nearly 70% of the budget off the table.

Early reports are that the Environmental Protection Agency is facing sharp cuts, but its total annual budget is just over $8bn – a drop in the bucket.

The State Department has also been singled out as a source for the needed funds, and its $50bn annually (including $22bn in direct aid) makes it a fatter target.

The lion’s share of humanitarian assistance goes to rebuilding efforts in Afghanistan and Aids treatment in Sub-Saharan Africa, however, which will be difficult to touch. Also unlikely to get the axe is military support, dominated by $3.1bn annually to Israel.

There’s a reason the Trump administration announced the military budget number before revealing where the money will come from. Spending is easy; cutting is hard.

The White House sent Mr Trump’s 2018 budget blueprint, which begins on 1 October, to federal agencies on Monday.

The agencies will then review the plan and propose changes to the cuts as the White House prepares for negotiations with Congress.

The Republican-controlled Congress must approve any federal spending.

Mr Trump’s plan is expected to face backlash from Democrats and some Republicans over the planned cuts to domestic programmes.

President-elect Donald Trump’s Cadillac One limousine is set to make its debut on Inauguration Day.

The first look at the presidential car also known as The Beast, reveals its features will be more impressive than some of the past ‘beasts’ used by his predecessors.

The Cadillac will be equipped with weapons including tear gas cannons, a shotgun, and even bottles of the President-elect’s blood type in case of emergencies, reports said.

The limo’s doors and windows will be bulletproof and sealed off to withstand chemical and biological attacks, which means only the driver will be able to roll down the window to pay tolls.

Exact details of the car’s features are not revealed to the public, but recent model images have shown the limousine will even protect the new presidential family with an underside that is impervious to road side bombs.

The Secret Service first proposed a replacement for the presidential limo in 2014, and now the new model will replace the fleet of around 12 cars that were used by President Barack Obama since 2009, Autoweek reported in November.

It will also reportedly be plated with military-grade armor, making the doors so heavy that President Trump won’t be able to open them from the inside.

General Motors has been paid a total of $15million to develop the vehicle, according to documents.

The new car will have the same black and silver paint as the previous beast, but it had been covered with camouflage paint to disguise new features.

Externally, the Cadillac One appears to have the same headlight and grille design as past beasts, (Cadillac Escalade sedan) and all body panels will be custom-fabricated.

The previous model was and included eight inches of armor, tear gas canisters, and two pints of the President’s blood.

The vehicle is also fitted with night vision cameras, GPS tracking and a satellite communication system to allow it to run in any conditions and make sure the President is always in contact.

The previous car, described as a ‘Caddy on a tank frame’, weighed eight tons due to the huge amount of armor plating built into the frame.

The doors were around eight inches thick, each weighed the same as the door of a Boeing 747 jet, (eight tons) and concealed in the trunk was an oxygen supply that allows fresh air to be pumped into the cabin in the event that the air outside becomes toxic.

The fuel tank of Obama’s beast was coated with armor plating and contains a special foam which expands on impact and that prevented it from exploding, even if it suffered a direct hit.

The tires were coated in Kevlar to protect them from bursting, but even if they did, the metal rims were strong enough to hold up the vehicle and keep it rolling in case the outer layer was blown away.

The vehicle may be equipped for just about any attacks, but it has ironically broken down on two public occasions.

In 2013, Obama’s limo broke down on his first presidential trip to Israel after his driver accidentally put gas in the tank instead of diesel.

One of the fleet cars got stuck leaving the US Embassy in Dublin in 2011  after it couldn’t overcome a speed hump.

An adjustable suspension may be included in the new model to avoid similar incidents.

The virtually indestructible car has come a long way since past state cars as President Lyndon Johnson’s 1968 custom-built black stretch limousine did not have bulletproof features or weaponry.

Warren G. Harding was the first president to be driven to his inauguration in 1921.
