The third annual Ghana Soybean Kick-Off event that showcases the latest advances in Soybean development in Africa, has been held with a call on the USAID through its Feed the Future programme, to expand its research on Soybean development in Ghana.

Dubbed: “Showcasing Innovations and Technologies to Improve Soybean Yields”, it is the only Soybean dedicated forum in Ghana, that brings together the public and private sector players to discuss critical challenges and opportunities within the Soybean value chain.

According to Deputy Director of the Savanna Agriculture Research Institute (SARI), of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Dr. Roger Kanton, the USAID Feed the Future programme research on Soybean has been on a limited and a prioritized scale.

He nonetheless commended the USAID Feed the Future programme for its research on Soybean development in Northern Ghana, and believes upscaling the project to cover several communities could improve the living standards of beneficiary farmers and other stakeholders within the value chain

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) is calling on government to provide anti-corruption agencies with adequate resources to fight corruption.

Over, the years, Ghana has been hit with various corruption scandals including the unlawful payment of GHC 51 million to businessman Alfred Woyome, the payment of GHC 144 million to Subah Info Solution by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), fraudulent deals under the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) among others.

Government has been widely criticized for failing to check the rise in corruption.

Former President John Rawlings has predicted that the National Democratic Congress(NDC) might not win the 2016 elections if it fails to take measures to tackle the increase in corruption.

Speaking to Citi News, the Deputy Commissioner of CHRAJ, Richard Quayeson attributed the inability of the country to effectively fight the canker to inadequate resources.

“We have made some good progress but I wouldn’t say we have done very well…We have the institutions in place but we need to invest in the fight against corruption, we need to resource these institutions like EOCO, etc for them to be able to effectively fight corruption,” he said.

The Deputy Commissioner further advised government to “support credible programmes” that are aimed at fighting the canker.

“It is quite known to the public that we are not investing in fighting against corruption. Look at the anti-corruption agencies in the country, we are not resourcing them, look at issues on corruption, we are not taking the campaign, taking the publicity, taking the sensitization issues sufficiently.”

Meanwhile , the former Commissioner for CHRAJ, Justice Emile Short has advised Ghanaians to actively involve themselves in the fight against corruption by holding public officials accountable and intensifying education.

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ),  has suggested to government to invest in the fight against corruption by providing adequate funding to anti-corruption agencies, and supporting their activities.

Deputy Commissioner of CHRAJ, Mr Richard Quayson said over the years, Ghana has made some progress in the fight against corruption, but government’s support to anti-corruption agencies in the effort to eliminate corruption or reduce it to the barest minimum.

He observed that corruption has a ravaging effect on society, and the price the nation pays is enormous.

Mr Quayson made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sideline of the on-going Fourth Commonwealth Regional Conference for Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Africa.

He said “it is our duty as a nation to show to the rest of the world that we can manage our own affairs when it comes to the issue of fighting corruption.”

The Deputy Commissioner urged government to ensure that Parliament passes the National Anti-corruption Action Plan into law, which was drafted by the Commission in collaboration with the Office of the President, Parliament and the Economic and Organized Crime Office.

He regretted that the bill has been in Parliament over the past three years.

Mr Quayson said the on-going conference would enable them share experience in their struggle against corruption and also equip them for the task ahead.
