The Wa circuit court presided over by Justice Baah Forson Agyepong has remanded five persons into police custody for their alleged involvement in the attack on the Upper West regional office of the National Disaster Management Organization(NADMO) last Wednesday.

The five; Nuhu Suglo, Seidu Salifu, Abdullai Hakeem, Osman Jamal and Bongaamwini are to reappear in court on February 9.

[contextly_sidebar id=”tzSIuvtTiteGCHNkhfvzb4cMv3lm1YEb”]They have been charged with four counts of assault, conspiracy to commit a crime, threat to harm and stealing.

Upper West Regional Minister, Sulemana Alhassan was reported to have ordered the release of some suspects who were arrested.

He subsequently sent the suspects to the Upper West regional Police Headquarters the next for questioning in relation to the attack but was suspended by the President hours later.

The Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Daniel Yeboah, prayed the Court to remand the suspects until police conclude investigations on the matter.

‘Youth attack NADMO office’

About 30 angry youth affiliated to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stormed NADMO’s office on Wednesday in an attempt to beat up all the staff.

In an attempt to break into the Regional Director’s office, his aid prevented them for a short while, but they eventually overpowered him. Police was later called in to intervene in the situation but they were prevented from effecting any arrest by the Regional Minister.

President Akufo-Addo later on Thursday suspended the Regional Minister.

A statement from the presidency said the Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, Amidu Ishaq, will act in the stead of the suspended regional Minister pending the conclusion of an investigation of the incident, according to a statement from the Presidency.

The statement added that “President Akufo-Addo reiterates his commitment to the application of the laws of the land, which must occur without fear or favour, affection or ill-will, and without recourse to the political or ethnic affiliations of any citizen of the land.”

The governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Karaga Constituency Chairman, Taahiru Zakaria, and four others who were detained by the Northern Regional police command, have been granted a police inquiry bail.

They were arrested after an official complaint filed by the under-fire Karaga District Chief Executive, Alhassan Yabdow, who was chased out of his office by some rampaging NPP youth.

[contextly_sidebar id=”hhiJnsXCHyafCwVZk0MhMpMl2uzrCUF0″]They were arrested four hours after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo reiterated the need for the law enforcement agencies to crack the whip on law breakers regardless of their political affiliation.

The constituency Chairman, Tahiru Yakubu, told Citi News that they are to report to the regional police command on Monday 30, October, 2017.

He commended the NPP regional leadership for their quick intervention in the case, and called for calm among party youth particularly his supporters who got infuriated by the DCE’s actions.

There is heavy security deployment in Karaga and its environs to forestall any renewed hostilities there.

The Police in the Northern Region are hunting for some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Walewale in the Northern Region, who allegedly destroyed some properties of the party.

The angry youth invaded the offices of the party to protest against the nomination of Abu Ahmadou as the new District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area.

[contextly_sidebar id=”kRHMitIHSwLKYd8Tc2crw43UcsYaNLDg”]The previous nominee, Saaka Sayuti, was rejected three times by the assembly.

Speaking to Citi News, the Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command, ASP Mohammed Tanko, said investigations have already begun to arrest the suspects.

“The incident at Walewale happened in the night around 9:00pm, and the police were informed. By the time the Police got there, they had vandalized the party office, and also Bawumia’s youth centre and had left. So the police did not meet the trouble makers on the ground. It is currently very difficult to identify exactly those who were involved in this particular disturbance, but investigations are underway to establish the perpetrators so that they will be arrested and prosecuted,” he added.

When asked how the police will discharge its duties since the case was a political one, ASP Tanko said they will continue to investigate the case regardless.

“We were not restricted in anyway by the political undertones associated with this kind of thing. We are not politicians, we look at the criminality of the act and we proceed according to what the law says,” he added.

Bugri Naabu appeals to rampaging NPP youth

The Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Daniel Bugri Naabu, had earlier cautioned the youth in the region to desist from such violent protests over the selection of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive nominees.

He asked the rampaging youth to exercise maximum restraint by respecting the President’s decision and advised all aggrieved party supporters to use the appropriate party structures to settle their  grievances with party leadership and the appointing authority.

A similar protest led to a political deadlock between some NPP supporters and the Savelugu/Nantong Municipal Chief Executive which was recently resolved by a Presidential mediation team.

A group, Patriotic Youth, affiliated to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Sunyani West Constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region, has commended President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo for the appointment of Ignatius Baffour Awuah (MP) as Minister for Employment and Labour Relations Designate.

The group conveyed their commendation in a statement signed by its convener Korang Takyi Frank.

[contextly_sidebar id=”CBDfYc3eiI7CVkgLFclnvrYUouE3mwvx”]According to the group, the Member of Parliament for Sunyani West Constituency is the best choice for the post having served as a Regional Minister, his tenure witnessed massive development in security, economy, infrastructure and many social interventions and therefore, has the experience and competence to steer the affairs of the new ministry, “the group said in a statement.

“He is honest, down to earth and will therefore have a good working relationship with labour unions. As an MP, he has constructed nurse’s quarters and mechanized five boreholes Sunyani-Fiapre, renovated and paved markets in the constituency as well as support to the needy and the development of sports”.

The group expressed the hope that the Minister Designate would institute measures to address the unemployment problems in the country, which according to them had become a national security threat.

The group blamed the outgoing Minister, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for subjecting Ghanaians to undue hardships with their inability to create job opportunities for teachers and nurses.

They therefore expressed the hope that Ignatius Baffour Awuah will work hard to consolidate and strengthen the confidence of Ghanaians in the Nana Addo-Bawumia led administration that will restore hope to all with the creation of job opportunities and restoration of teacher and nursing trainee allowances.

“We therefore call on parliament to confirm his nomination to enable the NPP implement its policies to minimize the suffering of Ghanaians and reduce unemployment to transform the country’s economy”. The statement concluded.

Bolgatanga Zongo Youth of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has described as problematic and unconstitutional the request made by former president John Mahama to maintain his official residence as a retirement benefit.

The group has called on Mr. John Mahma to vacate the residence immediately for the Vice president Dr. Alhaji Mawumia or be forced out using due process.

At a press conference held in Bolgatanaga, Secretary of the group, Shaibu Muftao, said John Mahama’s request to maintain Bungalow No. 3, Prestige Link, Cantonments, Accra and its adjoining facilities, was in contravention of the Transition Act.

Mr. Muftao argued that, John Mahama and the NDC government should not cry foul because they also refused Former President John Kufour an official residence for the past 8 years.

“The request by John Mahama is unlawful because the law, precisely the Transition Act, which was passed by Parliament demands that an outgoing president must vacate his official residence before the swearing-in of a new president.

So, per the law, president Mahama ought to have vacated his residence latest by 6th January 2017 especially because the house in question is the official residence for the occupation of the vice president Dr.Alhaji Mawumia, and therefore, his continuous stay in that house is unlawful and unconstitutional.”

Mr. Muftao called on John Mahama to vacate the residence immediately for Vice president Dr. Bawumia to occupy, per the convention.

“If he(John Mahama) fails to leave, then we expect him to be forced out of that house through due process. we hope the ex-president would pay heed to our call to avoid any further embarrassment”

‘Congratulations to Akufo-Addo’

The Executive Committee of the Zongo Youth Base in Bolgatanga congratulated Nana Addo on his victory in the just ended Presidential election.

“We also felicitate with you on the occasion of your inauguration ceremony which took place at the independence square on the 7th January,2017. We indeed recall vividly when you paid a courtesy call on us at our base in Bolgatanag, where you inspired us, admonished and demonstrated your believe and trust in the Ghanaian youth not leaving out the Zongo.”

“We know , that given the level of expertise of vice president Dr.Bawumia, your government shall introduce and implement economic policies that would ensure total change in the living standards of the entire citizenry. We pray that, Allah will guide, protect and grant you good heath and the wisdom to govern this country to the path of progress and total development.”

Germany midfielder Christopher Kramer had forgotten he was playing in the World Cup final after taking a smack to the head, referee Nicola Rizzoli has revealed.

Kramer’s head collided with Argentina defender Ezequiel Garay’s shoulder in the 19th minute of Sunday’s showpiece, which Joachim Low’s men won 1-0 after extra-time, but was allowed to play on.

However, he was substituted in the 32nd minute as the severity of his problem became apparent and it was later revealed that the Borussia Monchengladbach had suffered from concussion, leading to criticism of Fifa’s protocol over such injuries.

And the game’s referee Rizzoli has now disclosed the nature of a bizarre conversation that led to Kramer to being replaced by Andre Schurrle.

He told La Gazzetta dello Sport: “Shortly after the blow suffered by Garay, Kramer came to me and asked: ‘Ref, is this the final?’

“I thought he was joking, he repeated the question and said: ‘I need to know if this is really the final.’

“At my ‘yes’, amazed, he concluded: ‘Thanks, it was important to know’. I advised Bastian Schweinsteiger and they replaced Kramer.”

The player who came on for Kramer, Schurrle, eventually went on to grab the assist for Mario Gotze’s winner late in the game which crowned Germany as world champions for the first time since 1990.
