The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), will today [Sunday], hold an extraordinary national delegates conference to consider various proposed amendments to the party’s Constitution.

The event to be held in Kumasi is a follow up to the Annual National Delegates Conference at Cape Coast in August this year, at which various proposals were made for amendments to the party’s constitution.

[contextly_sidebar id=”RVSJ7drxr7uNlAc7LyBSUie21qFgYSXu”]Over 5,000 delegates including founding fathers and patrons of the party, Members of Parliament on the party’s ticket, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, and national officers of the party, are expected at the conference.

The NPP deferred the amendment of its constitution to the extraordinary national delegates conference when it held its Annual National Delegates Conference in August.

Indications are that, some members of the party have called for a review of the party’s electoral college system to ensure that the same number of delegates who vote for the party’s national executives, also vote for the selection of their presidential candidate.

Some NPP members have also reportedly called for a review of requirements for qualification to the constituency and regional executive position.

They want only persons who have gone through the ranks of the party at the local level, to be given the chance to vie for such positions.

Disagreement over amendments

Already, there have been a number of concerns raised over some of the proposed amendments to the Constitution.

For instance, the NPP-USA branch, this week, issued a strongly-worded statement accusing some persons in the party of hijacking the process.

No room for division

The Acting National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has called on delegates to ensure that they resolve any lingering issues they might have before they leave the Conference.

Mr. Blay said the NPP can take a step closer to retaining power in the 2020 general elections if the Conference is conducted in a peaceful manner.

“This is a family gathering; a meeting to see how best to ensure that our party is strong and formidable for future elections,” Mr. Blay said.

Ghanaians will soon enjoy a reduction in the amounts they pay for electricity tariffs, according to the Minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko.

Addressing members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at a rally during the party’s National Delegates Conference at Cape Coast on Saturday, Boakye Agyarko said the reduction is in fulfillment of a promise made by the Akufo-Addo government.

[contextly_sidebar id=”CTiZZBDnTn06j6FFmepBpGVKQiDDqPOa”]“Have patience with us, we have promised that electricity tariffs will reduce. Just as we said dumsor will be over, I’m assuring you that, very soon when you see your electricity bills, you will know that when NPP promises it honours it,” he added.

The NPP prior to the December 2016 general elections accused the Mahama government of ripping Ghanaians off with high utility bills and promised to reduce it when it comes into power.

They also assured to put an end to the erratic power cut which affected the country in the past.

Mr. Agyarko at the rally assured that “the days of dumsor will not return.”

He said although there have been few hitches at the end of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), “before the end of this year, the lights will always be on.”

“You will then know that we brought on board good motives and knowledge and we will continue with such trend so that Ghanaians will be comfortable,” he added.

Members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will today, Saturday, converge at the Central Regional capital, Cape Coast to take part in the party’s national delegates conference.

The conference is to help the party to among other things take stock of its achievements in the last few years.

The event will be in two sessions with the first one being a meeting of the National Council and National Executive Council (NEC) where a few amendments have been tabled for discussion.

[contextly_sidebar id=”hiiHDdOXoZLPL0L6BrxkYZ6WE9Ign1CI”]Citifmonline.com understands that if the amendment motions are accepted the party will amend its constitution.

The party at this session will also receive presentations from the Acting National Chairman of the NPP, General Secretary and Treasurer where the aforementioned persons will give accounts of their stewardship in the last one year.

During the second session, a rally will be held at Victoria Park where the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, his Vice, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as well as some ministers of State will take turns to address the gathering.

We’ll sanction aspirants who campaign
The General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu had earlier warned that their leadership will punish aspiring candidates who use the event to campaign.

Speaking to Citi News, John Boadu said the party will punish persons who flout the laws, by campaigning ahead of the party’s internal elections.

“The party and in particular National Council has noted with concern, the rate at which prospective candidates for various executive positions in the party display the campaign posters and banners at the just ended constituency and regional delegates’ conference as if we are holding internal elections. The party reserves the right to sanction or reprimand anyone who flouts this directive. It is a directive of the National Council and I think if you are a true party member, you have to respect our party because that is what our constitution says,” he added.

The NPP’s national delegates conference has been themed: “NPP, delivering on our promises, our roots, our strength, our future.”
