The Member of Parliament for Effutu constituency, Alex Afenyo Markin has called on the University of Education Winneba, (UEW) to as part of its corporate social responsibility undertake projects that will improve the relationship with the community.
He bemoaned the university’s practice of  awarding contracts to close associates rather than competent businessmen and qualified contractors from the Winneba township.
This he said has over the years killed indigenous businesses in the community and must stop immediately.
“At least if you go KNUST some jobs are reserved for locals but when you come to Winneba, common porter and security, people in management would bring their relatives from afar and our boys would be walking up and down without jobs. These things should cease,” he noted.
He made these comments when he presented some commercial vehicles, industrial sewing machines and hairdryers to identifiable groups in Winneba over the weekend.

Afenyo Markin called on UEW to respect their social contract with the community saying, “there are a lot of businessmen and contractors who can do supplies and can construct projects but you see a university management member who has given about ten contracts to his relatives from afar and our people are suffering. Some people have the track record on their fields operation they would go for bidding but would not get the job. Let me tell the university enough if enough.” he lamented.
“When Kwame Nkrumah took Winneba lands for public projects, our ancestors did not charge him anything but we want to ask what has the university done for us? Even when we faced the acute water shortage in Winneba last year, the University didn’t provide even one borehole at the cost Ghc15,000. From Winneba junction to the beach lets them show one thing the University has for the people this community,” he stressed.
He however promised to create job opportunities to reduce youth unemployment in the Effutu constituency by the end of his second term.

“It becomes a problem when people don’t have jobs so we would tap the various opportunities to create jobs for the people. We give Winneba a new identity so we are calling on all and sundry to support this vision. We are going to have a golf course in Winneba which would bring businessmen community here. We also want to activate our festival and fancy dress competition that bring us money through tourist attraction.”
The legislator appealed to his people to consider using alternative dispute resolution mechanism at arbitration centres to resolve  disagreements rather than resorting to the police station which he said is creating wealth for the police.
He said litigants stand to lose money if they consistently run to the courts to seek adjudication on various matters.
Afenyo Markin hinted he would set up a task force in consultation with the chiefs to ensure that no child stays out late beyond 8pm, adding that any child seen beyond this time would be arrested, while funeral ceremonies would not be allowed to go beyond the same time.
This move according to him is to curb the increasing teenage pregnancies in his constituency.

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Bantama, Daniel Okyem Aboagye, has dismissed as completely false, claims that he holds a dual citizenship.

He was emphatic that, “I have never owed allegiance to any other country apart from Ghana”.

Addressing a press conference in Kumasi, he said, he perfectly understood the legal requirements for becoming a Member of Parliament (MP) and would not do anything to create trouble for himself and his party.

He said he was also aware of the bitter experience, the former MP for Bawku Central,  Adamu Dramani Sakande, went through and would not breach the law.

He therefore called on his supporters to ignore the allegations and refuse to be unnerved by the tasteless gossip.

Mr. Aboagye confirmed having a permanent residence permit in American and that was not the same as holding “dual citizenship”.

“I am daring anybody with evidence to the contrary to publicly provide that”, he added.

He admonished his party members to overcome individual differences, unite their effort and work hard to win the December polls by a comfortable margin.

“Let us stay focused, channel our energies and resources into a convincing   win for the party and majority of Ghanaians who want to see a refreshing change, come 2016,” he said.
