The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said it is expecting the Akufo-Addo government to undertake more developmental projects since they [NDC] handed over a “fast developing Ghana” to the New Patriotic Party.

He said the government must also work on restoring peace in the country because the John Mahama government bequeathed a peaceful country to them.

The Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Koku Anyidoho made the statement on behalf of the party at the NPP’s recently held delegates’ conference in the Central Region.

While delivering a solidarity message, Koku Anyidoho said “On the 7th of January, 20/7, a peaceful and fast-developing Ghana was handed over to you by the NDC. All we are saying, is; give us more peace and development,” he said.

“Ultimately, as the governing party, we demand that you give us our peace. We shall not compromise on our peace. Give it to us or we shall demand it,” he added.

The NDC government ahead of the 2016 elections had described as “unprecedented” the number of infrastructural developments it had undertaken.

Few months to the December 2016 polls, the government cut sword for the start of construction of some projects while commissioning several others including school blocks under the much talked about 200 Community SHS project.

It also commissioned a Sugar Factory in Komenda.

Some of the projects however folded up have been closed down for reasons yet to be known but the NDC believes its achievements are unparalleled.

The NPP has challenged some of the claims of achievements made by the NDC.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has given assurances that his government will work closely with the private sector to ensure that the country realizes more development that will transform the lives of Ghanaians positively.

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has said the governing New Patriotic Party could have won 17 extra parliamentary seats but for the internal wrangling that rocked the party prior to the December 2016 general elections.

He lamented that the wrangling prevented more of their members from campaigning for the party.

[contextly_sidebar id=”NiOHfqSSSLk4lTO9d1qi3QzjqY2tBmLp”]“Any serious reflection will reveal that when the army of the NPP lifted high the flag of the elephant to go into combat a few among us decided not to be part of the battle. Not only did they only participate, they tried to dissuade others not to join because as they said, because Nana Addo was leading us, the party could not win. The party won a resounding victory with Nana Addo leading us. Without that group of party members.

NPP currently holds 169 majority seats in Parliament while the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has 106 seats.

Despite the huge margin, Mensah Bonsu said the NPP could have reduced the NDC’s seat to less than 90.

“…We won but with all hands on deck I believe we could have inflicted a much more pulverizing defeat on the NDC by perhaps reducing their numbers to less than 100 or even less than 90 seats in Parliament.  The election results bare testimony to that. There are about 17 seats we could have won nationwide if we could have worked slightly harder. We did not win these seats because among other things of our own internal conflicts…Without those internal conflicts we could have done yet better than we did,” he added.

The party in previous years battled with internal wrangling that led to the suspension of its National Chairman, General Secretary and Second Vice Chair, Paul Afoko, Kwabena Agyepong and Sammy Crabbe respectively.

Some disgruntled parliamentary aspirants also run in the December election as independent candidates thus weakening to an extent the NPP’s strength in some areas.

The National Executive Committee of the party found him guilty of violating Article 3(D) of the party’s constitution which enjoins members to publicly uphold the decisions of the party, through various acts.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has admonished the New Patriotic Party to employ strategists and thinkers who will serve as backroom staff to enable the the party stay in power for long.

According to him, such people must be paid well and made to develop extensive roadmap and short, medium and long term strategies for the sustenance of the NPP’s future.

“It has taken quite a long time for us to come into government. And now that we have it and there is so much to do, unfortunately the term of office is so short, we must keep on winning perhaps three, four five times, before the roots will go deep and we become the party of the nation,” he said.

For this to be possible, Kufuor said “we must have full time back room very professional thinkers and workers.”

“The back room people don’t tend to be too good on platforms, that’s the profession of politicians like us but invariably behind us we’ve got the backroom people working for us. It’s the same in government. So the party headquarters must be equipped with such full timers. They must be paid well and their role is just to sit and think and strategize for us.  They will be strengthening the party’s future. We talk of sustainability these days and I think the way to get to it is to get so professional in the back room,” he added.

The former President made the call when he was speaking at the Annual National Delegates Conference of the NPP at Cape Coast on Saturday.

“We should never forget that in current times we are in the era of technocracy; the digital age. You may be a democrat alright but if you do not know the dynamics of the time, you talk democracy and at the end of the day your economy might be faltering, you may not be able to do the necessary social interventions to ensure equality of opportunity that is also part of our DNA. So my prayer is that when the party retires into detailed deliberations the party will see how we will balance democracy with technocracy,” he added.

He also urged the party to be united and solve any issue they have internally.

The Conference themed: “NPP, delivering on our promises, our roots, our strength, our future” is to help the party to among other things take stock of its achievements in the last few years.
