A group calling itself the Northern Youth for Peace and Development, has added its voice to condemnations of political vigilantism which threatens Ghana’s enviable tag as the beacon of democracy in the sub region.

Some irate youth of the governing New Patriotic Party incessantly perpetuate political hooliganism despite President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s warnings.

[contextly_sidebar id=”qhvZY1XgOFyIgrIR9j1uZl44W2jHzxra”]It is against this backdrop the Northern Youth for Peace and Development claims the government has not shown enough commitment to tackle the national security threat.

The group’s President, Mumuni Believer Likpalmo, in a Citi News interview called for punitive measures to curtail political hooliganism.

According to him, the menace is endangering security in Northern Region, which is already plagued by a myriad conflicts.

Mumuni Believer Likpalmo implored government to re-strategize and tackle the menace head-on.

Below is the full statement:

PRESS CONFERENCE ADDRESSED BY NORTHERN YOUTH FOR PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT ON THE STATE OF INSECURITY IN NORTHERN REGION AND ITS DELIMINATING EFFECT ON DEVELOPMENT.

Good morning Ladies and gentlemen of the press, on behalf of the Northern Youth for Peace and Development (NYPD), I welcome you to this all-important Press gathering. We deem it extremely necessary to speak on the state of lawlessness and Government-Backed Terror attacks and injurious developments which have completely debased governance and threaten the safety of the good people of Northern region and Ghana for that matter.

Since January 07, 2017, when the mantle of leadership and a peaceful nation was handed over to President Akufo-Addo, Ghana has since been going through very sordid and unbearable moments of vandalism.

We believe the fairy-tale promises the NPP made in opposition to these youth is causing them to keep the Akufo-Addo government’s feet to the fire of accountability resulting in “one district one violence” instead of the “one district one factory” which could have yielded the youth a lot of jobs.

We may not blame them because they worked for the NPP in anticipation of jobs only for the President to be giving the jobs to his family and friends, the Senior Minister placing his two sons in juicy positions as deputy Directors at NCA and SSNIT, the appointment of the Speaker of Parliament’s son as an Ambassador to India, the Vice President, Dr Bawumia appointing his brother in-law as deputy Nadmo Coordinator and father in-law(Samira Bawumia’s father) as an ambassador to UAE to the neglect of these youth  who campagined tirelessly and worked their hearts out to bring NPP to power. So neglecting them could obviously be a recipe for disaster  as we are witnessing today.

The first and foremost responsibility of every government, is to ensure the security and safety of its citizens but the the Akufo-Addo’s government has caused such to elude Ghanaians nine months into office.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Permit me to quote the NPP’s 2016 Manifesto under Security “The NPP Government will secure peace and security for all Ghanaians. Under the NPP Government, Ghanaians will feel safe on the streets and in their homes. Ghanaians will go about their daily business in the secure knowledge that their persons, properties and lives are safe under an NPP Government”

The question now is that, are Ghanaians safe on the streets and their homes under this NPP government?  Are Ghanaians going about their daily businesses in the secure knowledge that they are safe? Absolutely No!

The Northern region alone has witnessed wanton acts of lawlessness under the full glare of the President. Notable among them are; Burma Camp Youth closed down the Regional School Feeding office in Tamale, the clash between NPP youth and the Police in Savelugu, the Kandahar Boys locking up the office of the CEO and tormenting staff of Tamale Teaching Hospital, the seizure of equipment of the contractor working on the Eastern Corridor Road, the burning of the YEA Coordinators motorbike, chasing out the DCE of Karaga, and freeing  their colleague suspects from the custody of the Police, the chasing out of Bole DCE and not forgetting the slapping of the current regional chairman of the NPP by his predecessor. The list goes on. Lives were lost and state properties were destroyed under all these occurrences. This is completely unacceptable.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this uncontrolled  series of violence under the watch of President Akufo-Addo is an acknowledgement and his tacit endorsement of the brigandry of impunity that is brazingly perpetuated by the youth of his own party.

Today, the NPP is no longer talking about ”one district one factory” but rather “one district one violence”. What has gone wrong? This unprecedented upsurge shows the inability of President Akufo-Addo government to fulfill their plethora of promises made to these disgruntled youth.

In fact hardly does a day pass without Ghanaians being inundated with news of violence and gory crimes being perpetuated with brazen bravado by NPP youth across the length and breadth of the country.

The NPP under the Nana Addo government is breeding unforseen “boko haram” at the expense of providing or creating the enabling environment for the private sector to create jobs for the teeming unemployed youth.

The government is helplessly watching whiles lawlessness fester and run riot to satisfy the whims and caprices of these youth.

We are by this press conference reminding the New Patriotic Party that, the Northern Youth voted for development and growth to help bridge the poverty gap between the North and the South and never the fear-filled anxiety amongst us under this suffocating economy.

We must note that, the continuous display of  lawlessness by the NPP hoodlums drive away investors because security is key and foremost factor every investor considers in the allocation of their businesses and companies. So how can a government that promised us lasting and an accelerated socio-economic development be driving away investors with their unbridle lawlessness?

Ladies and gentlemen,we also wish to question the stoic silence of the Clergy, Chiefs, Civil Society Organizations and other highly respected citizens while vandalism is being perpetrated. Their silence is too loud!

As innocent citizens, we wish to call on President Akufo-Addo to wake up if he is sleeping, to immediately clip the wings of these goons of the NPP before they metamorphose into boko haram groups.

We also call on the media to use their power to put pressure on the President to restore peace and security of our dear country for Ghanaians and foreign nationals to go on with their lives without fear.

We thank you for coming.

LONG LIVE GHANA!

Signed.

Barcelona and Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez has announced his retirement from international football.

The 34-year-old won the World Cup and two European Championships with his country.

He was capped 133 times, more than any other Spanish outfield player, and scored 13 goals.

Xavi told a news conference in Barcelona on Tuesday: “I’m grateful for all those years. It has been a fantastic time.”

He made his full Spain debut on 15 November 2000, aged 20, against the Netherlands.

“I’m not 20 anymore, but I still have the motivation of a kid,” he said.

He was voted player of the tournament at the 2008 European Championships as Spain ended a 44-year wait for a major international trophy and began a period of domination on the world stage.

Spain started the 2014 World Cup in Brazil as one of the favourites, but were dumped out of the tournament in the group stages after a 5-1 humiliation at the hands of the Netherlands and a 2-0 loss to Chile.

Xavi said: “I was going to retire after Euro 2012 but head coach Vicente Del Bosque persuaded me to stay on and go to Brazil, which was of course a huge disappointment for everyone and myself individually.

“After Euro 2012, it was generally understood I was going to be leaving after Brazil 2014. I hope Del Bosque stays as manager of Spain because I don’t think there is a better man for the job.

“I want to thank everyone involved in that team for the way they treated me and the respect, and I could not wish for a better time as an international.”

Barcelona have confirmed that influential midfielder Xavi has sustained a calf injury in training on Monday and faces a brief spell on the sidelines.

The 34-year-old played the second half of the Catalans’ 1-1 friendly draw against Nice at the weekend and scored their only goal from the penalty spot.

Nevertheless, his preparations for the 2014-15 campaign have now suffered a minor setback.

“Xavi Hernandez suffered a slight calf strain in his left leg during training Monday morning,” a statement on the official Barcelona website reads.

“Club doctors will decide when he can return to training over the next few days.”

Speculation had been rife about a potential move away from Camp Nou for the Spain international, but technical director Andoni Zubizarreta confirmed last month that Xavi had opted to remain at the club.

The midfielder made 29 appearances in La Liga last term, scoring three goals to help Barcelona to second place, and will hope to play more football under new boss Luis Enrique this season.
