The Gbolo Alzariya English and Arabic Primary school in the Sagnarigu district is one of many schools in the Northern Region without Information Communication and Technology (ICT) laboratories and tools.

The school’s headmistress, Madam Mahama Maria, revealed to Citi News that the only laptop used for teaching the pupils has been out of commission since 2015.

According to her, a philanthropist donated the said laptop to the school with a population of 430 students.

“We have an ICT teacher in the school. In the past we used to have a laptop which someone gave to the school to use but it’s been spoilt for about two years now,” she said

“It is a big problem for us that we have an ICT teacher in the school and yet there is no laptop for us to use and teach the students.”

The ICT teacher, Samuel Wedaga expressed his frustration with the current situation saying “We don’t even have a single computer and ICT is a practical subject. Without the computer when you teach the theory it becomes abstract to the kids and so we need computers for the pupils to feel the practical aspect.”

He appealed to government and other philanthropists to assist the school.

Given the importance of the practical aspects of studying ICT, the absence of the requisite infrastructure had created a huge problem.

With the world wholly embracing technology, the study of Information, Communication and Technology is an integral part of the academic schedule of schools in the country.

Reopening of second cycle institutions in the three regions of the north is in limbo because of government’s failure to reimburse three consecutive terms’ Feeding Grants.

Continuing students are to stay home until further notice, whereas their counterparts in southern Ghana have resumed their course work.

[contextly_sidebar id=”PnsFg1xf8e1p3F7eLIYDsDOqYmzBSXoV”]Heads of the affected schools have vowed never to reopen up until government defrays the accumulated debt. Early this year, the schools were temporarily shut down over the perennial problem of unpaid Feeding Grants.

Food suppliers have withdrawn their services accusing the schools authorities of not being credit worthy. The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), decried the situation and called for government’s prompt action.

The CHASS leadership maintained that they could no longer fend for the students’ well-being on credit.

The perennial situation has always distorted the academic calendar of second cycle institutions in the three regions of the north.

We’ll pay Upper East SHSs feeding grants soon – GES

Second Cycle Institutions in the Upper East Region that are yet to receive their feeding grants from the government will do so soon, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has said.

The Public Relations Officer of the GES, Reverend Jonathan Bettey, a week ago told Citi News that processes have been initiated to ensure that the payments are made to the school to avert any interference with the academic work.

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), is likely to postpone the reopening of second cycle institutions in the Northern Region because food suppliers have finally withdrawn their services.

This is largely due to government’s failure to defray the accumulated feeding grants debt covering three academic terms.

[contextly_sidebar id=”AOoiM7nbPzc4pK6LJtqxeuuYDfu6CkzU”]Students of second cycle institutions in the Northern Region have been scheduled to resume their course work on January 5, 2017 following the Christmas break.

But their fate is hanging in the balance because the leadership of CHASS is threatening to temporarily shut down the schools.

They say they can no longer take care of the students’ well-being, hence the threat.

A frustrated Bursar of one of the schools in the Tamale Metropolis on condition of anonymity, said the students are being fed on credit as school management is avoiding creditors.

The unresolved feeding grants issue has always distorted the academic calendar of second cycle institutions in the three regions of the north, where the falling standard of education is high.
