Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has told Parliament that government is aiming at completing the construction of a military training school on the disputed Nkonya-Alavanyo land in 2018.

According to him, structures for the establishment of a military school on the disputed Alavanyo and Nkonya lands, are about 70 percent complete.

[contextly_sidebar id=”kvMwh7pgPTQ8uQPUhQEZF3r3nvooTzHz”]Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday during the debate over the Ministry’s 2018 budgetary allocation, Dominic Nitiwul said the disputed land was suitable for a jungle training school for the military, but lack of funds had resulted in the stalling of the project.

“In view of the fact that the structures are not fully completed, the School is not functioning currently as proposed. It is however envisaged that, when funds become available in 2018, the Training School would be completed for commissioning and operationalization. In the meantime, it is envisaged that occasionally, some Jungle Welfare exercises from Akim Achiase Jungle Welfare School will be conducted on the disputed land.”

Dominic Nitiwul told Parliament in July 2017 that the government had decided to take over the land to serve as a military base.

He told the House that he believes the move will help resolve the over a century old conflict between Nkonya and Alavanyo that has resulted in the loss of many lives.

“We on our part the security we’ll start training in that particular area, the structures have already been put there, to ensure that the security is permanently present there because we need land to train so if people have land and they give to us to train and they are disputing over it, we will go and use that place to train,” he said.

The Volta Regional Minister, Archibald Letsa, had earlier hinted of government’s plan to take over the land, adding that both factions; Nkonya and Alavanyo had agreed to the takeover.

Mr. Letsa on a visit to the area after a shooting incident, said government was determined to ensure that  lasting peace prevails in the area to pave way for accelerated development, but lamented that the two feuding factions are not giving peace a chance, a situation that has virtually turned the two traditional areas into ghost areas, starving them of the needed investment to stimulate growth.

He however assured them that as soon as sanity returns to the area, he will do whatever it takes to move investments there.

A 62-year-old woman has been shot dead in Alavanyo in the Volta Region.

Persons closed to the situation have blamed the incident which happened on Saturday on the protracted Nkonya-Alavanyo dispute.

[contextly_sidebar id=”XVwj8Ngp8tESqvEnVI3LlBYr8E0dfBTS”]The deceased, Madam Elizabeth Anku is reported to have come out of her home to pick mangoes when the incident happened.

A former Assemblyman for Alavanyo, Wisdom Kwami Amaldo who confirmed the incident to Citi News called for an end to the inhumane act.

“That is the attitude of our people from Nkonya this time around. They can just get anywhere and shoot. After the shooting, they went uphill and started firing so the security here were also exchanging fire with them,” he said.

Mr. Amaldo said calm has however been restored to the area.

He said the people of Alavanyo had no plans of retaliating but are furious over the development and will advise the people of Nkonya to cease the attacks.

Two persons from Nkonya were reported dead in April when some unidentified persons opened fire on them on their way from their farm between Nkonya and Alavanyo.

The dead were among five farmers from Nkonya-Ahinkro who were returning from their farm.

The three others managed to escape although one of them was left injured.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior has reviewed the curfew placed on the Nkonya and Alavanyo township.

The curfew hours are now between 8pm to 5.30am.

Two persons have been reported dead with other injured in a shooting incident that occurred yesterday [Wednesday] in a bush between the Nkonya and Alavanyo communities in the Volta Region.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 2pm.

Reports say some unknown assailants opened fire at five farmers from Nkonya-Ahinkro who were returning from their farm on Wednesday.

The Assemblyman for Nkonya Ntumda, Sylvester Akompi who spoke to Citi News about the incident said residents of both towns were living in fear following news of the incident.

“Five people went to farm, they are palm wine tappers. They were tapping between Nkonya and Alavanyo, precisely Nkonya Ahenkro. So they went to the farm and I had rained a bit. On their way home, a group of people appeared with guns and started shooting. Everyone wanted to find his way, two people managed to hide somewhere, while 3 people were shot.”

“One died instantly. He would be about 40 or 41 years. If it happens like that, people cannot be in the house, so if you come here now, you will see that the whole area is in total pandemonium. People have left their houses. People are in the streets and you will realize that people are really scared.”

The second injured person died at the hospital.

The incident occurred hours after the Minister for the Interior announced that it had reviewed a curfew on the area to 11pm to 4am.

Citi News has learnt that there will be an emergency district security council meeting at Nkonya in the Biokoye District over the matter today [Thursday].
