A group that calls itself Concerned Youth for Employment in the Volta Region has asked government to provide jobs for the youth of Volta Region.

[contextly_sidebar id=”AxaET5uc77zT5t3hy9IQtVO39ujv8ByB”]Members of the group, who were clad in black and red attire, marched through the streets of Hohoe, and later knelt in the streets on Friday night to plead with government bring jobs to the region.

The leader of the group, Malcom Selasie Asamoah, said that government has no excuse to deny Volta Region youth job opportunities.

“We are on our knees, begging our president that the youth of Volta Region need jobs, that the youth of Volta region are awake, that we’ll not take any excuse. Come next year, there’ll be no excuse for NDC, there will be no excuse for CPP, and there will be no excuse for NPP. All we need from our parties is that every one of us here must have a job,” he said.

He pointed out that even those who are self- employed need support from government.

“I know that some of you are self-employed. Look, you need support. You can’t do it on your own. You need the support of government.”

Selasie also warned that the group will be marching to the offices of the Ministry of Employment next month.

“I want to tell government, through the minister of employment, Honorable Haruna Iddrisu, that next month, we are marching to Ministry of Employment.”

In 2010, the government placed a ban on the recruitment of employees in the public sector to reduce the increasing wage bill.

A recent United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF ) report has revealed that Cape Coast, in the Central Region, is leading in child prostitution cases in Ghana.

This is according to the Central Regional Minister, Aquinas Tawiah Quansah.

[contextly_sidebar id=”rgTdGHyw7PFqPpH3S05t8O6eDYRGZjp1″]According to him, UNICEF has the problem captured in it’s report and was planning to collaborate with the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) to mitigate the situation.

Through the UNICEF/PPAG collaboration, child prostitutes in the metropolis would be mobilised and given some vocational training to help them generate income, since poverty could be the top-most factor for engaging in such activity.

The result of the survey also comes three months after the Regional Minister had stated that child prostitution was on the rise in the metropolis.

Mr. Quansah was speaking as the guest of honour at the official opening of the 15th Biennial Delegates’ conference of the Cape Coast Diocese of the Association of Methodist Church Choirs Ghana (GHAMECC) at Elmina over the weekend.

He also appealed to the Methodist Church to think of ways to help keep the children out of prostitution.

The four-day conference is on the theme “Witnessing to Christ, Holistic Spirituality and Service for Current and Succeeding Generation.”

The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru has pledged to support the Damango Redemption Children’s home and prevent an imminent shut down of the facility.

The Children’s home is likely to be closed by government officials by December 2015, if it fails to meet some conditions presented to it by the Social Welfare Department.

The decision, according to the Department of Social Welfare is as a result of the inability of the management of the orphanages to meet certain conditionalities.

[contextly_sidebar id=”D7OhpEYRnf1TGhFIlhpsCgk1xFm3zdFO”] The minister gave the assurance at a ceremony to mark his 48th birthday which he spent with the inmates of the Damango Redemption Centre,

“We’ve just been told by the department of social welfare that they have given you some conditions to meet. Don’t keep those conditions to yourself make them available to us let us know what they are, so that the little way we can do to support ,we’ll make sure that we’ll do it before December,” he stated.

The Social Welfare Department has stated that it will clamp down on all orphanages that do not conform to certain conditions including; the number of children per care taker (that should not exceed 7), that inmates should not be housed in a storey building as well as ensuring an improvement in the general welfare of inmates at the various orphanages.

Currently, twenty five out of the thirty three orphanages in the Northern Region have been shut down.

[contextly_sidebar id=”K0BEH2EhzXjaUvz45GqEDbf1itRE0PBf”]However, those fears have been allayed as the only occupants were not in the building at the time of the collapse.

Officials from the Abuakwa District police command and the fire service are at the scene and have cordoned off the area.

Residents who spoke to Citi News suggested that the ‘dilapidated’ building’s weak foundation was responsible for the collapse.

Building collapses not a rare thing

There have been several building collapses in recent years, often attributed to poor contsruction work on these structures.

Earlier this month a 22-year-old student of the Nyankumasi Ahenkro Senior High School in the Assin South District, was killed after the building in which she was sleeping collapsed on her following a heavy downpour.

Another person died in December 2014 when a restaurant under construction collapsed at Cantonments in the Greater Accra region.

And it’s almost three years since the Melcom shop at Achimota in Accra collapsed, claiming the lives of about 14 people and injuring several others.

The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU), Ghana has held its maiden Regional Consultative Council Executive Committee of the Rural and Community Banks, Professionals and Managerial Staff Union (PMSU) congress in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale.

Seven officers drawn from Rural and Community Banks operating in the Northern Region were duly elected with Osman Ali as the regional Chairman.

???????????????????????????????

In a Citi News interview, the newly elected Chairman Osman Ali kicked against some financial institutions’ engagement of personnel on contracts beyond six months.

[contextly_sidebar id=”w7sIj87RzIZQxAj09BemCnL1srxMFMEc”]According to him, the exploitation of personnel, which is characteristic of Rural and Community Banks operating in the country is a clear violation of their fundamental human rights.

He therefore called for the incorporation of all contracted personnel who have worked with banks over six months.

Osman Ali served notice of his administration’s commitment to embark on a vigorous campaign to ensure that Rural and Community Banks subscribed to the nation’s Labour Laws.

“Contractualization and casualization has become another issue which we have identified where people are being contracted for over six months without being considered as permanent staff: you see some organizations still doing because of lack of job opportunities, they find a way of taking advantage of that to keep people on contract which the union is intended to fight against.”

???????????????????????????????

He maintained that Council will zealously safeguard the civil liberties of all members of the ICU, Ghana.

“Another bigger challenge that we are facing as a union that we have also come to realize is people are not following laid down procedures when it has to do with labour issues: Management as it were sometimes take arbitrary decisions and dismiss people which we are intended to fight against,” Osman Ali remarked.

“We have over the time realized that workers have been denied their rights: these days you hear in other organizations that individuals have been dismissed just because people don’t know what their rights are,” he stated.

Osman Ali also admonished personnel to refrain from dubious acts which contributed to the liquidation of some Rural and Community Banks.

???????????????????????????????

“As leaders of this council, we will advise members to be committed to their duties and ensure that they are actually distanced from creating problems that will lead to the collapse of the banks such as fraud or doing anything untoward that will lead to the collapse of the bank.”

The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU), Ghana, Deputy General Secretary (Operations), Morgan Ayarwine said the Union was in the process of completing the formation of the Regional Consultative Council Executive Committees.”

This, according to him will pave way for the establishment of the National Consultative Council of Rural and Community Banks.

“It is the desire of the ICU to exemplify its leadership qualities by ensuring that unionized workers in the financial sector of the economy continue to play their yeoman’s role in the socio-economic development of the country.”

He added, “As our members go through a debilitating economic hardship, it is our hope that the association of Rural and Community Banks will consider a better deal for our hard working members when the upcoming collective bargaining negotiation commences.”

Morgan Ayarwine impressed upon the newly elected leadership of the Northern Regional Consultative Council Executive Committee to avoid dictatorship during the discharge of their core mandate.

“I urge the newly elected leadership of the PMSU at the Regional Consultative Council level to serve members but not to lord it over them.”

He further encouraged staff of Rural and Community Banks to readjust to the competitive nature of that sector.

“In our era of competition such as this, staff of the Rural and Community Banks must rededicate themselves and work to increase productivity.”

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong, has denied that there is a rift between him and some party officials and appointees in the region.

[contextly_sidebar id=”j6QJNTsNADT7UGqoxUIXQ4UAj9GbTolX”]He said it is not true that the relationship between him and his deputy, Mr Joseph Yarmin, the Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr Kojo Bonsu and the Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, had soured.

This was contained in a press statement signed by his Public Relations Officer, Clement C. Kegeri.

It is a reaction to public pronouncement by a group calling itself “Coalition of NDC Foot Soldiers” which sought to create the impression that there is bad blood between Mr Sarpong and the trio.

The group, led by one Ben Abdalla, lashed out at the three officials in a Kumasi-based radio station.

Mr Sarpong, however, disassociated himself from their vile attacks and stated categorically that he had no links with the group.

He said he did not know of the existence of the group and disapproved of its activities, especially, when there was every indication that it could create cracks in the party.

The Regional Minister demanded that Abdalla and his group render unqualified apology to the officials.

Also, he urged the Regional Executive of the NDC to set up a Disciplinary Committee to deal with aberrant party members out there who were creating confusion.
