The Minority in Parliament believes the government’s approval of a credit facility of GHc10,459,500 from the Agricultural Development Bank (adb) for McDan Shipping Company was politically motivated.

Aside from alleging procurement infractions, the Minority also said the “selection of the beneficiary company in the award of this contract raises serious conflict of interest issues.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”6MGodWxQxpckFkDaiDnZ3lVYUO7lGKhC”]Addressing the press in Accra on Tuesday, the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, said the governing New Patriotic Party was worryingly exhibiting “nepotism and blatant partisanship” in its affairs.

“Given the key role played by the current Finance Minister in the campaign and related activities of the NPP, the hasty unilateral approval of this loan in breach of laid down laws and procedures raises serious questions,” the Minority stated.

The Minority already feels the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, usurped the authority and functions of the adb’s Board of Directors to award the credit facility.

President Nana Akufo-Addo is yet to constitute the requisite governing board to oversee such transactions as best practice demands.

Per the Minority’s assessment, Mr. Iddrissu said no due diligence was even conducted by the management of the bank before the Finance Minister’s approval.

Thus, the Minority’s conclusion is that this credit facility is a reward to McDan for its service to the NPP when it was in opposition.

“It is clear that the decision to award this contract and loan to McDan in clear breach of due process was influenced by political considerations arising out of a desire to reward an entity that assisted the NPP in its activities while in opposition.”

“This adds to a growing list of conflict of interest situations in which the Finance Minister seems to be entangled- the USD 2.25 bond, as well as the appointment of close relatives and his business associates to key positions at the Finance Ministry, the Bank of Ghana and a number of other state institutions,” the Minority added.

The loan facility was granted McDan to enable it to undertake its business operations, and in particular, to execute a supply contract awarded by the Ghana Cocoa Board.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, is already looking ahead to the 2020 election, and he believes the immediate past President, John Mahama, is the man to lead their party to victory in the next four years.

Former President Mahama is coming off the worst election defeat of a sitting president in Ghana’s democracy, where he recorded 44.40 percent of valid votes cast, losing to the New Patriotic Party’s Nana Akufo-Addo, who was endorsed by 53.85 percent of the electorate.

Despite the election defeat, Ras Mubarak said John Mahama is a tried and tested option for the NDC, following his election victory in 2012.

“In the next election, I do not see any other candidate who can best lead us to victory other than John Dramani Mahama. He has been there; he knows what we need to do to get it right.”

“The rank and file and a majority of people I have spoken to are all eagerly awaiting to have President Mahama on the NDC’s ticket in 2020, and I think he would be very exciting. I think he is the only candidate who can get us the victory,” Mr. Mubarak said.

Without explicitly endorsing the former President for 2020, the NDC MP for Wa Central, Rashid Pelpuo, also said he had enjoyed John Mahama’s Presidency, adding that “I think he did well and I believe that given the chance, he would have done even better than he did.”

Ghanaians will regret voting out ‘a pearl like John Mahama’ – Pelpuo

There has been roughly a month of introspection after the NDC’s defeat in the 2016 general elections, and Mr. Pelpuo also believes Ghanaians may have taken John Mahama for granted.

“Ghanaians will regret, possibly, for throwing away a pearl like John Mahama”, the legislator said in an interview with Citi News’ Richard Dela Sky minutes after the expiration of the sixth Parliament of Ghana’s fourth Republic in the early hours of January 7.

The Flagbearer of the NDC for election 2020 is likely to be decided on after the party’s national congress which its General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has indicated will be in 2018.

That congress is also expected to allow the executives to devise strategies towards the 2020 elections after it lost by a little over one million votes in the 2016 elections.

The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) Presidential candidate, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet has described the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as nation wreckers for which reason they should be rejected at the polls.

According him, the two major political parties have for the past 24 years failed to develop the country.

He was addressing a rally at Janga in the Walewale constituency of the Northern Region.

Ivor Kobina Greenstreet charged saying, “Everywhere we go Ghanaians are tired of all the fighting of the NDC and the NPP who are fighting to get power to steal our hope and take money for themselves and their family members.”

He insisted that the NDC and the NPP have done nothing to improve the living conditions of Ghanaians.

“Separate the fight of these two evil monsters, two parties which are merely racketeers. Enough is enough, enough of these 24 years of hell from these monsters. Fellow Ghanaians it is time to end it.”

Ivor Kobina Greenstreet appealed to the electorate especially those in the three northern regions to consider the CPP as the best alternative to the two main political parties on December 7.

“There is only one party who has truly sown and therefore deserves to reap your votes. Who has truly served the people of the three northern regions and the entirety of the surface of this our beloved nation and that is the CPP, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s party.”

The CPP Presidential candidate, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet has since left for the Upper East Region on his nationwide campaign tour.
