Seven persons, including a police officer, have been arrested by police in Wa in the Upper West Region, for alleged extortion and narcotics peddling.

The men were apprehended after one of the suspects led a team of policemen to their hideout.

[contextly_sidebar id=”yt0EklS8OJ7ooBnGG5FWQT70pG9HS13I”]Addressing the media on Thursday, the Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Boapeah Okyere, said the police found the suspected narcotic substances after a search of the suspect’s room.

One Hakeem Kasim, 28, was arrested in a residence in a suburb of Wa, after he was caught wrapping some substances suspected to be narcotics drugs.

People found in the house with Hakeem were also arrested.

Hakeem subsequently led police to the room of Constable Nana Amako Donkor who was also arrested, DCOP Boapeah Okyere stated.

DCOP Boapeah Okyere also cautioned the public to beware of persons who come in cunning ways to extort from them.

“The police would like to use this opportunity to caution the public to be wary and careful of such people parading as informants and defrauding high ranking personnel with sugar-coated information. Such people use the success stories of known arrests made elsewhere as their brainchild,” he said.

This arrest follows the Wednesday apprehension of another police officer, Corporal Raymond Amegashie, who is believed to be the leader of a robbery gang that attacked and robbed a supermarket in Nungua in the Greater Accra Region.

An Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday deferred the sentence of one Seidu Issah, who was arraigned for possessing 58 wrappers and a half compressed parcel of dried leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp.

The court deferred the sentence to October 17 to allow the prosecution to send the exhibit to be tested.

Issah was convicted on his own plea by the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh.

The court ordered that the exhibit be sent for testing before the next adjourned date.

Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Patience Mario told the court that the complainant Kwame Antwi is a businessman and lives at Dome Zongo, while Issah is a trader and lives at Achimota Abofu.

She said the complainant’s wife operates a drinking spot at Dome Afghanistan, and the convict has been peddling narcotic drugs in and around the drinking spot.

She said the complainant and his wife had warned him on several occasions to stop his activities around their business but all fell to deaf ears.

DSP Mario said on September 23, at about 0730 hours, the complainant’s wife arrived at her shop and found her younger sister one Latifa deeply asleep, and was informed that the convict cooked jollof rice with Indian hemp and gave some to the victim to eat.

She told the court that, the victim slept till the next day September 24.

The prosecution said the complainant reported the matter to the police and a medical report form was issued to his wife to take her sister to the hospital for medical attention.

The complainant led the police to the scene and Issah was arrested. A search conducted in his house revealed 58 wrappers and a half compressed parcel of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

An Accra Circuit Court has handed a one day jail term to Usif Adams, a Driver’s mate, for using narcotic drug without lawful authority.

Usif, who pleaded not guilty to the charge of using one wrap of narcotic drug, was found guilty of the crime after full trial by the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh,.

The convict was also fined an amount of GHC 1,800.00, or in default serve one year in prison.

He is also to sign a bond of good behaviour for two years or in default serve six months in prison.

In sentencing, the court said considering the totality of evidence adduced, the prosecution led sufficient evidence against the convict.

The court said in sentencing it also took into consideration all the mitigating factors, the nine months already spent in custody by the convict as well as his plea for mitigation.

The court also ordered the CID to destroy the exhibit in the presence of the court registrar.

Earlier, the prosecution, Superintendent of Police, Kweku Bempah, told the court that on December 4, 2015, the Odorkor District Police Command organised an operation to weed out the activities of criminals within their jurisdiction.

He said Usif together with some others were arrested at Anyaa, and a search conducted on him revealed one wrap of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

Superintendent Bempah said upon interrogation the convict could not give any reason as to who supplied them with the exhibits.
